<![CDATA[By Andy SerlingFOX Sports Horse Racing Analyst Just like that, the first two legs of the Triple Crown are in the record books. A sense of normalcy returned on Saturday, with Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables following the same path that worked successfully in 2017 with Cloud Computing, to annex the 147th Preakness Stakes with Early Voting. RELATED: Early Voting wins Preakness Early Voting (5-1 odds) paid $13.40, $4.60 and $3.60 after not running in the Kentucky Derby. Epicenter paid $2.80 and $2.40 for place and show, and Creative Minister paid $4.20 to show. The only mild surprise was that his victory was not achieved by leading from start to finish. Unlike his previous three efforts, he rated comfortably in second behind Armagnac, took control as the field turned for home and was able to hold off a late rally from favored Epicenter. "Honestly, I was never worried," Brown said. "Once we had a good target, I actually preferred that. We were fine to go to the lead, but I thought down the backside it was going to take a good horse to beat us." A good horse did come, but at least on this day, he wasn’t good enough. While it was surprising to see Epicenter toward the back of the pack through much of the race, contrary to popular opinion, I do not believe this was the fault of his rider Joel Rosario. He simply lacked the early speed he has shown in the past and ultimately Rosario made the best of the situation. He ran his usual good race in defeat, it just wasn’t good enough on this day. As for the filly Secret Oath, she did endure a lousy trip and performed better than her fourth-place finish might suggest. Steadying early in the race, she lost position which forced her to make a wide, and perhaps somewhat premature, move around the turn. She will be back to fight another day, though likely against her own sex, in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga on July 23. Now it’s on to the final jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes on June 11. How will this field resemble the first two legs of the series? Early Voting is expected to wait for Saratoga, but Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike is scheduled to return. While Rich Strike will be nowhere near the 80-1 odds he was at the Derby, he won’t be favored to win the Test of the Champion. The question, however, of who will be favored could be open to much debate. Will Mo Donegal, fifth in the Derby, provide trainer Todd Pletcher with his fourth Belmont Stakes triumph? Perhaps the most intriguing horse is We the People, who won the Belmont prep for this race, the Peter Pan, by over 10 lengths last week. Regardless, Rich Strike will likely get much of the attention over the next three weeks. Was his Derby a fluke? Did he get lucky due to the extremely fast pace, or is he a horse that is just starting to come into his own? Besides all of this, will he be able to handle Belmont's grueling 1 ½ miles, the longest race of the series? Stick around as we will try to answer all these questions over the next few weeks. <![CDATA[The news came as a shocker on Sunday morning: Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit had tested positive for an anti-inflammatory drug called betamethasone. The drug is not banned, but there are limits, and the test showed 21 picograms (a picogram is one-trillionth of a gram) of the substance in the horse’s system, which is more than twice the legal limit in Kentucky. Medina Spirit has not yet been disqualified from the Derby, as more testing will be done. But in the meantime, the Derby did ban trainer Bob Baffert from entering any horses at Churchill Downs. "Failure to comply with the rules and medication protocols jeopardizes the safety of the horses and jockeys, the integrity of our sport and the reputation of the Kentucky Derby and all who participate," Churchill Downs officials announced in a statement. "Churchill Downs will not tolerate it. Given the seriousness of the alleged offense, Churchill Downs will immediately suspend Bob Baffert, the trainer of Medina Spirit, from entering any horses at Churchill Downs Racetrack. We will await the conclusion of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commissions’ investigation before taking further steps." Baffert, a Hall of Famer, denied any wrongdoing and said he still planned to enter Medina Spirit in the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing’s famed Triple Crown. "We didn't have anything to do with it," he said. "Don’t know how it got in his system. Is it a mistake or something? We’re going to get to the bottom of it.‘’ Churchill Downs said Medina Spirit would be disqualified and second-place competitor Mandaloun declared the winner if its findings are upheld. It also said it would "await the conclusion of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commissions’ investigation before taking further steps" on Baffert. Baffert has trained seven Kentucky Derby winners and two Triple Crown champions – American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2009. Have horses been disqualified from the Kentucky Derby in the past? If Medina Spirit ends up being disqualified, it will only be the third time that has happened in the 147-race history of the event. Dancer’s Image was disqualified in 1968 for testing positive for phenylbutazone, a pain reliever that is used commonly now but was banned at the time. And in 2019, Maximum Security was disqualified after it was determined that he had interfered with other horses in the stretch. Does Baffert have a history of having horses test positive for banned substances? According to The Athletic, Baffert has now had 30 horses test positive for various substances over the course of his storied and lengthy career. Some of those have been overturned, including the case of 2019 Triple Crown winner Justify, who tested positive for scopolamine after the Santa Anita Derby. Gamine and Charlatan tested positive for lidocaine last year, but those were also overturned. Baffert blamed those positive tests on a patch worn by a member of his training staff who was being treated for back pain. Gamine also tested positive for betamethasone. In the case of Gamine, Baffert admitted giving the horse betamethasone. But he denies giving it to Medina Spirit. What does this mean for gambling? According to the Louisville Courier Journal, those who bet on Mandaloun are unlikely to cash in if Medina Spirit is disqualified, noting that once a race is official, the betting results are final regardless of what happens later. Bob Heleringer, author of "Equine Regulatory Law," told the paper that that is "one of the most irrevocable standards in racing" and said it is the law in every state. Here is a sampling of reactions around the sport.]]>

<![CDATA[The first Saturday of May is here. And you know what that means: It's the Kentucky Derby. As always, Churchill Downs hosted the 147th Run for the Roses. It looked a little different than it has in the past, but it was still more traditional than the previous edition. The biggest event in Louisville allowed fans this year but at a reduced capacity to allow for social distancing. The race began at 6:57 p.m. ET, with 19 horses in the running. The 20th horse, King Fury, scratched Friday. Check out the top moments from this rite of spring. Spotted on the grounds! Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took a break from feuding with the franchise to enjoy a Saturday afternoon with fiancée Shailene Woodley. He didn't want to talk shop. Rodgers wasn't the only NFL quarterback in attendance. Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was looking rather dapper. Jockey's eye view! If you ever wanted to know what it looks like to ride a Derby contender ... History lesson Here's a brief ode to Secretariat, who still holds the track record. Looking good, kid A future jockey? He certainly looks the part. An iconic tradition It wouldn't be the Derby without ladies donning their most fashionable headpieces. Here are some more for your viewing pleasure. The pick is in This seems like a foolproof way to select a horse to wager on. Sneak peek What a beautiful trophy – almost as pretty as the roses. All smiles The squad was looking good. Loading up It was almost time. Call to the post Here we go ... What a race! Medina Spirit went wire-to-wire to win the 2021 edition of the Derby. Most didn't recognize this horse's talent, but he left no doubters Saturday. With Medina Spirit's win, Bob Baffert became the most successful trainer in Kentucky Derby history, with seven victories. This was his second consecutive Derby win. It was also jockey John Velasquez's fourth Derby title. What a day!]]>

<![CDATA[There is a rhythm to horse racing, like the beat of hooves down the backstretch. Every year, the Kentucky Derby sets the stage, giving way to the Preakness Stakes, and finally, The Belmont Stakes. Winning the Derby, amid its pomp and ceremony, means horse, jockey and owner are all on the path to the prestigious Triple Crown. And so every year, as the sport turns to Pimlico Race Course, the tantalizing possibility of another historic champion lives. Every year, like clockwork, the hype builds and history swirls around the Preakness. There is nothing like a Triple Crown winner, after all, with 13 such champions dating back to the first in 1919 (the regally named Sir Barton). And, of course, there is no year like 2020. For the first time, the Preakness was the final leg of the Triple Crown, coming four weeks after a Kentucky Derby delayed months by the coronavirus pandemic. And this year, as with so many sporting events around the country, there were no fans in attendance when Swiss Skydiver captured the 145th running of the Preakness. FOX Sports was given an exclusive look behind-the-scenes at Pimlico, however, and wanted to share the experience, including this video tour from the grounds in Baltimore. Although it might not be as well known for ostentatious accessorization as the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness itself is one of the biggest parties of the year. In fact, the race has included an event called "Infield Fest" since 2010, which features marquee musical acts and has helped draw nearly 100,000 fans to the track annually – not to mention the untold thousands who congregate outside just to bask in the atmosphere. But on this early October Saturday, where there would typically be lines extending as far as the eye could see and parties all outside the facilities, there was only quiet. The scene was most striking at one of the track's main gates, which, instead of brimming with revelers waiting to enter, was barricaded and being used as a staging area for emergency vehicles. At the entrance closest to the track's clubhouse, an almost foreboding calm belied the impending clash of half-ton thoroughbreds over 1 and 3/16 miles. The most stark comparison, however, came in the infield, where two contrasting pictures are worth more words than could ever fit on this digital page. Indeed, it is only with the throngs removed that one truly starts to get a sense of just how massive the facility is. Were the fans missed? Absolutely. They elevate the Sport of Kings into a party shared by people across all facets of life. But everyone involved treated Saturday as if it were as close to a normal Triple Crown race as possible. The grounds looked gorgeous, worthy of the fabled event and the majestic beasts that make it so thrilling: And most importantly, the event itself was everything you'd want in a race, coming right down to the wire with the kind of edge-of-your-seat excitement unique to a Triple Crown extravaganza. There's no doubt that once fans are allowed back, they'll throw a rager unlike any Pimlico has ever seen – and that's saying something. But for now, Saturday was truly a Preakness Stakes unlike any other. <![CDATA[There was an Authentic surprise at the 146th Kentucky Derby. Bob Baffert earned his sixth Kentucky Derby victory on Saturday, as jockey John Velazquez led Authentic to a wire-to-wire win over heavy favorite Tiz the Law – the winner of June 20's Belmont Stakes in the first leg of the Triple Crown races. Saturday's race was not without drama, however, as Authentic and Tiz the Law battled it out on the home stretch. The Derby is a 1 1/4-mile course, and Authentic's time of 2:00.61 represented the seventh-fastest time in the event's history. He has now won five of his six career races. Baffert has trained two Triple Crown winners in his Hall of Fame career – American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018 – but he won't get a shot at the prestigious honor this year. However, after the race, the legendary horse trainer shared his emotions on winning his sixth Kentucky Derby to go along with seven Preakness Stakes wins and three Belmont Stakes victories. "I'm disappointed I didn't get to run my other horse, but Johnny V. gave [Authentic] the most incredible ride." Prior to the race, there was an interesting and unfortunate turn of events for Baffert, after his other horse, Thousand Words, reared back in the paddock area and flipped over, causing him to miss the race. During the incident, Baffert's assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes broke his arm, and after the race, Baffert said that he was thinking of Barnes throughout the entire race. “We were yelling ‘Do it for Jimmy’ the whole way. Just unbelievable.” Then, in the winner's circle, Authentic seemed to get a little too excited and put Baffert on the ground. Quite the day in Kentucky. The third leg of the Triple Crown – the Preakness Stakes – will take place on Oct. 3.]]>
