<![CDATA[They're doing it one more time. Bombshell news dropped Monday: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring for a rematch on Saturday, Sept. 19 on Netflix. The two squared off in the most lucrative fight in sports history back on May 2, 2015. Mayweather won by unanimous decision. Now, Pacquiao has a shot at revenge. Let's check out the odds for the blockbuster rematch at Bet365 as of Feb. 24. This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. If you sign up or place a wager, FOX Sports may be compensated. Read more about Sports Betting on FOX Sports. Mayweather-Pacquiao 2 odds Mayweather to win: -175 (bet $10 to win $15.71 total)Pacquiao to win: +150 (bet $10 to win $25 total)Draw: +1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total) Who saw this coming? Mayweather officially retired at 50-0 after a TKO win over Conor McGregor on Aug. 26, 2017. At the time of that fight, Mayweather was 40 years old. He's now 49. Between that McGregor fight and now, Mayweather has participated in a number of exhibition bouts but no fights that have officially gone on his record. In fact, Mayweather is scheduled to face Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout in April, before taking on Pacquiao for a second time. Tyson, 59, most recently faced Jake Paul in a sanctioned bout on Netflix, back in November 2024. Tyson lost via unanimous decision. As for the Pacman, he retired back in 2021 but returned to face Mario Barrios in May 2025. That bout ended in a majority draw. Pacquiao, now 47, is 62-8-3 in his career. He has not won a fight since a split decision win over Keith Thurman on July 20, 2019. For years, Mayweather and Pacquiao were considered the best fighters of their generation, but the two did not share the ring until Mayweather was 38 and Pacquiao was 36, which many considered to be well past their primes.]]>

<![CDATA[When Jake Paul steps into the ring on Dec. 19, he'll also be taking a step-up in competition. A big one. Paul, who typically fights in the cruiserweight division (maximum 200 pounds), will take on former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. As a heavyweight, Joshua fights at around 250 pounds. Does Youtuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul have a chance against the heavier, more experienced former champ Joshua in this latest battle on Netflix? Here are the odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Dec. 18, including total rounds and winning method. This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. If you sign up or place a wager, FOX Sports may be compensated. Read more about Sports Betting on FOX Sports. Jake Paul-Anthony Joshua Odds TO WINAnthony Joshua: -1200 (bet $10 to win $10.83 total)Jake Paul: +700 (bet $10 to win $80 total)Draw: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total) TOTAL ROUNDSOver/Under 2.5: -115 (bet $10 to win $18.70 total) WINNING METHODPaul by KO/TKO/DQ: +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total)Paul by Decision/Technical Decision: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)Joshua by KO/TKO/DQ: -400 (bet $10 to win $12.50 total)Joshua by Decision/Technical Decision: +450 (bet $10 to win $55 total) ROUND BETTINGPaul to win Round 1: +5000 (bet $10 to win $510 total)Paul to win Round 2: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)Paul to win Round 3: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)Paul to win Round 4: +8000 (bet $10 to win $810 total)Paul to win Round 5: +8000 (bet $10 to win $810 total)Paul to win Round 6: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)Paul to win Round 7: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)Paul to win Round 8: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total) Joshua to win Round 1: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total)Joshua to win Round 2: +350 (bet $10 to win $45 total)Joshua to win Round 3: +450 (bet $10 to win $55 total)Joshua to win Round 4: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total)Joshua to win Round 5: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)Joshua to win Round 6: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)Joshua to win Round 7: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)Joshua to win Round 8: +3500 (bet $10 to win $360 total) Here's what you should know about the fighters: The Underdog: Perhaps Paul's biggest accomplishment in the boxing world is his win over 58-year-old Mike Tyson. Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) was 27 at the time and notched that victory over the former world champ in Nov. 2024, also broadcast on Netflix. In fact, according to organizers, the event was such a huge draw that it ended up being the highest-grossing combat event in Texas history. So while Paul's celebrity does lure audiences, he's only ranked No. 14 by the World Boxing Association in the cruiserweight class. Considering his size and relative inexperience compared to Joshua, some critics view the match between the two as unsafe. Paul has tangled with a number of MMA fighters, notching boxing wins over Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz and Ben Askren. After the win over Tyson, he defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. via decision. Paul's one loss came when he faced British boxer and reality TV star Tommy Fury. Paul was supposed to take on lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in an exhibition fight this month, but Davis' legal issues sidelined the fight. Now, Paul takes on Joshua. The Heavy Favorite: Not only is Joshua the heavy favorite, but he comes into this battle with two heavyweight title belts on his résumé. In fact, his odds to win have gotten shorter, moving to -1200 from -1000 over the last two weeks. Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) has been recovering from an elbow surgery that he underwent earlier in the year, but according to reports, he plans to use his fight with Paul as practice before taking on top contenders in early 2026. Tyson Fury, the former unified heavyweight champion, could be next for Joshua after Paul. Joshua most recently lost via knockout to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. Prior to that, he fought another untraditional boxer, former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Joshua knocked Ngannou out in the second round of that bout. <![CDATA[There was a tidal wave of big bets over the weekend, on NFL Week 2 odds and college football Week 3 odds. And for some strange reason, there were several major moneyline wagers on heavy favorites. To clarify, if needed: With a moneyline wager, a team just has to win its game, regardless of final margin. But taking huge favorites requires betting a lot to win a little. One college football bettor took that to the extreme, with a wager of more than half a million dollars. More on that bet and other notable plays, as we recap the weekend that was in NFL and college football betting. And we’ll even throw in a few knockout bets that landed on boxing. This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. If you sign up or place a wager, FOX Sports may be compensated. Read more about Sports Betting on FOX Sports. Moneyline Mania Sixth-ranked Oregon was a 25.5-point favorite at Northwestern. So the corresponding moneyline price — the odds on the Ducks just winning the game — was a massive -5000 at Hard Rock Bet. That meant it would take a $5,000 bet to win just $100. So one high-roller decided to multiply that $5,000 by 100 and then some, to make it more worthwhile. The bettor put $515,000 on Oregon, which then went out and won 34-14, allowing Northwestern no points until the fourth quarter. The profit on that bet: $10,300. Total payout: $525,300. On that same matchup, a Caesars Sports customer put $21,000 on Oregon -7000, to net a profit of … $300. Several more five-figure bets landed on big moneyline favorites Saturday, including these at Caesars Sports: Big Bucks on Boxing We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming on football bets to talk boxing. Saturday night’s showdown between Terence Crawford and Canelo Álvarez, before 70,000 fans at Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, drew the two largest major wagers of the weekend. BetMGM took a $2 million bet on Crawford +140 to win. At Caesars Palace, a customer plunked down $715,000 on Crawford +140. And Caesars Sports took another big six-figure play, as well, $300,000 on Crawford +140. Álvarez got in on the act, too, with BetMGM taking a $300,000 bet on Canelo -185. That bet lost, as Crawford won by unanimous decision to cash those three huge tickets. The $2 million bet netted $2.8 million profit (total payout $4.8 million); the $715,000 wager profited $1.001 million (total payout $1.716 million); and the $300,000 play profited $420,000 (total payout $720,000). Parlay Partay I Let’s start with a parlay that runs to Monday night’s Chargers vs. Raiders game. A DraftKings Sportsbook customer mixed in a lot of NFL and a couple of MLB plays on a $20 15-leg parlay. All that remains is Chargers -3.5. If L.A. wins by 4 or more points, then that 20 bucks turns into $63,947.95. DraftKings is offering a cashout of $27,797.54. Would you take the cashout, or let it ride? Another DraftKings customer put $50 on a four-leg anytime touchdown parlay: Lions wideout Jameson Williams; Bengals wideout Tee Higgins; Cowboys wideout George Pickens; Rams wideout Davante Adams. All four players found the end zone Sunday. Odds for that parlay were +45871, or in easier-to-digest terms, about 459/1. But the bettor utilized a 50% odds boost to take the price to +68807, or about 688/1. So a $50 bet became $34,453.50. Wrapping it up, DraftKings took a $500 bet on an 11-leg NFL moneyline parlay: The Cowboys nearly blew up that ticket, as did the Indianapolis Colts, who needed a huge lucky break on a penalty to beat Denver 29-28. Bottom line, though, the bet got there, and the customer won a whopping $90,375 (total payout $90,875). Parlay Partay II At Hard Rock Bet, two huge long-shot parlay tickets got to the pay window with six-figure wins. First up, a ridiculous 19-leg parlay of mostly MLB, along with six NFL moneylines. The customer put $125 on the wager at odds of +196081, or about 1961/1. The 13 MLB components were a mix of Over bets on run totals and moneyline bets on specific teams, and even included some in-game legs. To that, the customer added six NFL moneyline favorites: Notice that all six of those NFL legs were solid favorites. And the bettor still got a sweat from the Cowboys, who needed a 64-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation, then all of overtime to win 40-37 on a 46-yard field goal. Plus, the Cardinals blew almost all of a 27-3 mid-third-quarter lead against the Panthers, hanging on for a 27-22 victory. But the ticket survived, and the bettor pocketed an incredible profit of $245,100.68. Still, those two scares hopefully serve as a good reminder of why parlays are a bookmaker's best friend. The second ticket: A $75, 15-leg parlay, all on NFL player prop bets. The legs are too numerous to mention, but included a mix of star players scoring anytime touchdowns — Saquon Barkley, Deebo Samuel, D.K. Metcalf, Amon-Ra St. Brown and more — along with a handful of Overs on receiving yards, passing yards, rushing yards and even field goals. Somehow, all 15 legs came together at odds of +220010, or about 2200/1. So the bettor amassed profit of $165,007.85. Pretty unbelievable. Just keep in mind these are sports betting's version of lottery tickets. Temper your expectations if you try to pull off something similar. Bad Bets A couple of colleges didn’t make actual bets. But they gambled large by scheduling home games against perceived cupcake opponents, paying those schools a bucket of money for their road-trip troubles. UCLA was a 15.5-point favorite vs. New Mexico, which received $1.2 million for Saturday’s visit to the Rose Bowl. The Lobos repaid that favor by pounding the Bruins 35-10. Also, Virginia Tech paid Old Dominion $400,000 to make a cross-state trip to Blacksburg, where the Hokies were relatively modest 5.5-point home favorites. But the Monarchs embarrassed VaTech 45-26. I Like Big Bets and I Cannot Lie As noted above, big money was flying around sportsbooks across the nation. Let’s recap some of the more notable major wagers, starting with the NFL. And how about this positive player-prop payout: A Fanatics Sportsbook customer put $100,000 on Colts QB Daniel Jones to have 300 or more passing yards, at odds of +550. Jones threw for 316 yards in a 29-28 victory over the Broncos. And the bettor pocketed a hefty windfall of $550,000. And a few from the college football Week 3 odds market, starting with a big donation to the house: I could go on forever with these kinds of bet from the past weekend. But you get the point. Here’s another point: These big plays usually come from high-roller/casino VIP types who have the bankroll to absorb the loss. So be reasonable with your wagers. Don’t bet your rent money or dip into the kid’s college fund. Enjoy the Monday night doubleheader! Patrick Everson is a sports betting analyst for FOX Sports and senior reporter for VegasInsider.com. <![CDATA[Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are set to meet in an early 2026 matchup of boxing Hall of Famers. Tyson, who will turn 60 next year, will return to the ring after his loss to Jake Paul last year in an eight-round bout. He'll meet the unbeaten Mayweather, 48, who said the "exhibition will give the fans what they want." No date or site was provided in the announcement Thursday by CSI Sports, the live boxing production company which will launch a media streaming and broadcast partnership with this event. "When CSI came to me about stepping in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, I thought, ‘No way this happens,’" Tyson said in the release announcing the fight. "But, Floyd said yes." "This fight is something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen," Tyson added. "However, boxing has entered a new era of the unpredictable — and this fight is as unpredictable as it gets. I still can’t believe Floyd wants to really do this. It’s going to be detrimental to his health, but he wants to do it, so it’s signed, and it’s happening!" Tyson was a heavyweight champion and though Mayweather won titles in five weight classes, none was above the 154-pound limit of junior middleweight. His last official bout of his 50-win career was against MMA star Conor McGregor in 2017. That fight, along with his victories over Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Álvarez, were the three richest bouts in boxing history. "I’ve been doing this for 30 years and there hasn’t been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy," Mayweather said. "You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big, and it’s going to be legendary. I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want." <![CDATA[YouTuber-turned-cruiserweight boxer Jake Paul and undefeated WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis have agreed to fight on Nov. 14 at Atlanta's State Farm Arena. Paul's promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions, and Netflix announced the highly unusual matchup Wednesday. Netflix will stream the fight worldwide to its more than 300 million subscribers. The 30-year-old Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), a three-division world champion, would be the first star near his ostensible prime to face Paul (12-1, 7 KOs), the online celebrity who has become one of the world's highest-paid combat sports athletes despite never fighting an elite boxer. Netflix and Nakisa Bidarian, Paul’s business partner, did not refer to the fight as an exhibition, but it's unclear how Georgia officials would allow the matchup to be held as a competitive bout, given the fighters' dramatic difference in size and experience. Paul typically weighs more than 200 pounds in the ring, while Davis is a 135-pound champion who has never fought above 140 pounds. The fighters did not announce a contracted weight or the number of rounds in their planned bout. The fight would mark a return to Netflix for the 28-year-old Paul, whose victory last November over the then-58-year-old Mike Tyson drew an estimated 108 million viewers globally. After Paul beat a tepid Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by decision earlier this summer, he entered the World Boxing Association’s cruiserweight rankings at No. 14, making him eligible to fight for world titles. Instead of pursuing a cruiserweight belt, Paul recently discussed a fight with two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua — a more logical opponent in terms of size and strength — but shifted his focus to the popular Davis, who has jousted with Paul on social media for years. Perhaps Paul can look inside his own family for a plan: His older brother, Logan, weighed 189 pounds before fighting Floyd Mayweather at 155 pounds in an eight-round exhibition bout in 2021. Promoters said the spectacle sold more than 1 million pay-per-view buys and made more than $80 million. Davis has been billed by his promoters as "the modern-day Mike Tyson" because of the frequency with which he has won by knockout, but his career and life have been rocky in 2025. He struggled to a shocking draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in his most recent ring outing in March, and he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Florida last month before the misdemeanor battery case was dropped last week. Bidarian said Paul and Davis are "favorites of the Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences," and that their bout will "determine the true face of boxing’s next generation." "This isn’t just a fight, it’s a spectacle that brings together two of the most electrifying figures in boxing today," Netflix vice president Brandon Riegg said. Reporting by The Associated Press. <![CDATA[The next boxing superfight is official. Canelo Álvarez will defend the Ring Magazine super-middleweight belt against light middleweight and former welterweight titlist Terence Crawford on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas. Álvarez is 63-2-2 in his career, with his only two defeats coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Dmitry Bivol. At 41-0, Crawford is undefeated. Here are the odds for the upcoming megafight at DraftKings Sportsbook, as of June 10. Alvarez vs. Crawford odds Canelo Álvarez: -195 (bet $10 to win $15.13 total)Terence Crawford: +155 (bet $10 to win $25.50 total) Rarely do arguably the two biggest names in boxing share the ring, but such will be the case when Álvarez and Crawford do battle in the fall. Álvarez has fought in several huge fights over the course of his career, including his fight with Mayweather, three fights with Gennady Golovkin, and fights with Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Julio César Chávez Jr. However, most recently, Crawford was involved in the biggest fight in boxing, when he fought Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023. Crawford won by TKO in the ninth round, becoming the unified welterweight champion in the process. Crawford has fought once since that victory over Spence, earning a unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov in August of last year. It was Crawford's light middleweight debut. Álvarez's last fight took place in May of this year, a unanimous decision win over William Scull in a super middleweight clash. Álvarez will enter the superfight with Crawford as a slight favorite, most likely due to the fact that Crawford has never fought at 168 pounds. However, Álvarez does not have a KO victory since 2021. Crawford has nine KOs in his last 10 fights. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? <![CDATA[Jake Paul will take on former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. in the influencer-boxer's next bout on June 28 at Anaheim's Honda Center. Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) and Chávez (54-6-1, 34 KOs) will have a 10-round fight at a 200-pound catchweight limit, promoter Golden Boy announced Friday. Paul has mostly fought fellow YouTubers and mixed martial artists since beginning his wildly lucrative boxing career five years ago. He fought 58-year-old Mike Tyson last November, winning by unanimous decision. Paul negotiated extensively for a bout against Mexican star Canelo Alvarez earlier this year, but Alvarez spurned the bout for a rich four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, the boxing promotional arm of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority. It's unclear whether Alvarez was serious about fighting Paul or simply leveraging the Internet star for a bigger payday. The 39-year-old Chávez has been somewhere in between a serious boxer and a showman for many years. He had a long, lucrative career of his own, but it was largely built on Mexican fans' unconditional love of his famous father. The younger Chávez was best known for lacking discipline and frequently missing weight, although he also managed to win the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defend it three times before Sergio Martinez took it away in 2012. Chávez has also resorted to fighting mixed martial artists in recent years, and he infamously lost to former UFC star Anderson Silva in 2021. Chávez has fought only twice since that defeat, and he narrowly beat former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in a six-round bout last year. Reporting by The Associated Press. <![CDATA[George Foreman, a two-time heavyweight boxing champion, has died at age 76, his family announced. "Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose," his family said. "A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family. "We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own." A native Texan, Foreman participated in a couple of the most famous boxing matches of all time. In 1973, he climbed to the peak of the heavyweight division by stopping Joe Frazier in "The Sunshine Showdown." The following year, Foreman faced Muhammad Ali in "The Rumble in the Jungle." Ali came out on top with the audacious victory in Zaire, baiting and taunting Foreman into losing his belt in one of the greatest fights ever staged. Foreman left the sport a few years later, but returned after a 10-year absence and a self-described religious awakening. He then pulled off one of the most spectacular knockouts in boxing history in 1994, flooring Michael Moorer — 19 years his junior — with one perfect combination to claim Moorer's two heavyweight belts. Foreman's transformation into an inspirational figure was complete, and he fought only four more times before moving onto his next career as a genial businessman, pitchman and occasional actor. He was best known as the face of the George Foreman Grill, a rudimentary cooking machine which sold more than 100 million units and made him much wealthier than his sport ever did. In the first chapter of his boxing career, Foreman was nothing like the smiling grandfather who hawked his grills on television to great success. Foreman dabbled in petty crime while growing up in Houston’s Fifth Ward, but changed his life through boxing as a teenager. He made the U.S. Olympic team in 1968 and won gold in Mexico City, stopping a 29-year-old opponent in a star-making performance. Foreman rose to the pinnacle of the pro game over the next five years, but was perceived as an aloof, unfriendly athlete, both through his demeanor and through the skewed racial lenses of the time. He stopped Frazier in an upset in Jamaica in January 1973 to win the belt, with his knockout inspiring Howard Cosell’s iconic call: "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!" Foreman defended his belt against Ken Norton before accepting the fight with Ali in the now-immortal bout staged in Africa by promoter Don King. Ali put on a tactical masterclass against Foreman, showing off the "rope-a-dope" strategy that frustrated and infuriated the champion. Foreman was eventually knocked down for the first time in his career, and the fight was stopped in the eighth round. Exhausted and disillusioned, Foreman stopped fighting in 1977 and largely spent the next decade as a preacher after his religious awakening. He returned to boxing in 1987 in his late 30s, and he racked up a lengthy series of victories before losing to Evander Holyfield in a title fight in 1991. Three years later, Foreman got in the ring with Moorer in Las Vegas. Moorer appeared to win the first nine rounds rather comfortably, with Foreman unable to land his slower punches. But Foreman came alive in the 10th, hurting Moorer before slipping in the short right hand that sent Moorer to the canvas in spectacular fashion. Foreman quit the ring for good in 1997, although he occasionally discussed a comeback. He settled into a life as a boxing analyst for HBO and as a pitchman for the grills that grew his fame and fortune. A biographical movie based on his life was released in 2023. Foreman had 12 children, including five sons who are all famously named George Edward Foreman. "Legendary boxing champion, life-changing preacher, husband, father, grand- and great-grandfather and the best friend you could have," WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman wrote on social media. "His memory is now eternal, may Big George rest in peace." The Associated Press contributed to this report.]]>

<![CDATA[There are countless athletes that have legendary nicknames attached to their brand, but which ones are the best? Here are the 100 best athlete nicknames of all time. 100 best athlete nicknames of all time 10. William Perry: "The Fridge" Perry was thrown into the fire as a rookie (1985) on an elite Chicago Bears defense. Totaling five sacks and two fumble recoveries, Perry held his own on a Chicago defense that led them to a Super Bowl triumph. Of course, that's not all the defensive lineman did, as "The Fridge" punched in two rushing touchdowns in the regular season and another in Super Bowl XX. Perry spent the bulk of his 10-year NFL career with the Bears, with whom he's ninth in franchise history with 456 solo tackles. 9. Jerome Bettis: "The Bus" It's not wise to get in the way of "The Bus." A six-time Pro Bowler, Bettis was a force to be reckoned with for the Pittsburgh Steelers — and the Rams for the first three years of his career. Surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in eight seasons, six of them coming in Pittsburgh, Bettis is second in Steelers history with 10,571 rushing yards and 78 rushing touchdowns. In his final season (2005), Bettis rushed for nine touchdowns in the regular season and three in the postseason, helping the Steelers win Super Bowl XL. 8. Walter Payton: "Sweetness" "Sweetness" is how someone could define Payton's voice. A five-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowler, Payton has a case for being the best running back in NFL history. Surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in 10 of his 13 seasons in the sport, Payton is second in league history with 16,726 career rushing yards and fifth with 110 rushing touchdowns. Payton played his entire career with the Bears, with whom he won Super Bowl XX. 7. Wayne Gretzky: "The Great One" Gretzky, or "The Great One," was majestic on the ice. A career that saw Gretzky win four Stanley Cup titles in five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers saw him finish as the NHL's all-time leader in points (2,857), goals (894) and assists (1,963) by a wide margin. Gretzky led the sport in goals five times, points 11 times and assists 16 times across his 20-year NHL career. Furthermore, Gretzky claimed nine NHL Hart Memorial Trophy honors in the span of 10 years. 6. Calvin Johnson: "Megatron" When you're 6-foot-5, have great hands and run like a freight train, you get nicknamed after the leader of the Decepticons. A three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler, Johnson was arguably the best wide receiver of his generation. Spending his entire nine-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions, "Megatron" became the franchise's all-time leader in receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619) and receiving touchdowns (83). Johnson led the NFL in receiving yards twice and posted 1,000-plus receiving yards in seven of his nine seasons. 5. David Ortiz: "Big Papi" After a respectable six-year stint with the Minnesota Twins (1997-2002), Ortiz came to the Boston Red Sox in 2003 and became one of the greatest players in franchise history. Earning the nickname "Big Papi," Ortiz was money for Boston in the postseason, helping it win three World Series (2004, 2007 and 2013). He posted 30-plus home runs and 100-plus RBIs, respectively, in 10 of his 14 seasons with the Red Sox. Ortiz is 17th in MLB history with 541 career home runs. 4. Michael Jordan: "Air Jordan" Nike saw greatness in Jordan, enough to give him his own signature shoe in 1984, and he shattered the hype. Jordan, who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, finished his career as a five-time MVP, 10-time scoring champion and 11-time All-NBA honoree. Across his 15-year career, "Air Jordan" finished with a career average of 30.12 points per game, which stands as the best in NBA history. 3. Jerry West: "The Logo" The NBA logo looks a little bit like West, doesn't it? An All-Star in each of his 14 seasons in the NBA, which was spent entirely with the Los Angeles Lakers, West — who isn't what the NBA logo was designed after, wink-wink — helped Los Angeles win the NBA Finals in the 1971-72 season. West is second in Lakers history with 25,192 career points. 2. Deion Sanders "Prime Time" Sanders was one of the best defensive backs in NFL history, held his own as an MLB player and has coached at the collegiate football level since 2020. Everywhere one looks, Sanders is on in "Prime Time." An eight-time Pro Bowler, Sanders won the Super Bowl in back-to-back years with two different teams (San Francisco 49ers in 1994 and Dallas Cowboys in 1995) and is tied for fifth in NFL history with nine career pick-sixes. 1. Earvin Johnson: "Magic" Johnson was "Magic" with the Lakers. He was as gifted of a facilitator as anyone in league history, hit the boards at a high level and was smooth off the dribble as a scorer. The 6-foot-9 floor general was a three-time NBA MVP who led the league in assists four times, averaged double-digit assists per game in nine of his 13 seasons in the sport and was a 10-time All-NBA honoree. Johnson won five NBA titles with the Lakers. 11. Michael Irvin: "The Playmaker" 12. Giannis Antetokounmpo: "The Greek Freak" 13. Jason Williams: "White Chocolate" 14. George Gervin: "The Iceman" 15. Tyrann Mathieu: "Honeybadger" 16. Derek Jeter: "The Captain" 17. Paul Pierce: "The Truth" 18. Allen Iverson: "The Answer" 19. O.J. Simpson: "The Juice" 20. Julius Erving: "Dr. J" 21. Shaquille O'Neal: "Diesel" 22. George Herman Ruth: "Babe" or "The Great Gambino" 23. Darryl Dawkins: "Chocolate Thunder" 24. Kobe Bryant: "Black Mamba" 25. Larry Bird: "Larry Legend" 26. Charles Barkley: "The Great Mound of Rebound" 27. Gilbert Arenas: "Agent Zero" 28. David Robinson: "The Admiral" 29. Gary Payton: "The Glove" 30. Shohei Ohtani: "Sho-time" 31. Larry Bird: "The Hick from French Lick" 32. Kevin Garnett: "The Big Ticket" 33. Rafer Alston: "Skip to my Lou" 34. Vince Carter: "Half Man Half Amazing" 35. Kevin Durant: "Slim Reaper" and "Durantala" 36. Nikola Jokic: "The Joker" 37. Dominique Wilkins: "Human Highlight Reel" 38. Hakeem Olajuwon: "The Dream" 39. Karl Malone: "The Mailman" 40. Mike Tyson: "Iron Mike" 41. Pete Maravich: "Pistol Pete" 42. Tyson Fury: "The Gipsy King" 43. Steve Francis: "The Franchise" 44. Terrell Suggs: "T-Sizzle" 45. <![CDATA[Brothers Jake Paul and Logan Paul made social media announcements Tuesday that suggested their next fight will be against each other and aired on HBO Max. Calling it the "moment you've waited a decade for," the posts featured a head-to-head shot of the brothers with a March 27 date and the HBO Max logo. However, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday, the Paul brothers are actually set to announce a reality series. Jake Paul, 28, and Logan Paul, 29, are both YouTube stars who know how to create a buzz. Their exhibitions have drawn the interest of the biggest names in combat sports. Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson in November in an eight-round unanimous decision. Logan Paul went the distance in an exhibition against Floyd Mayweather in 2021. Jake Paul and Tyson, the former heavyweight champion, broke records. Promoters said in November that the Tyson-Paul fight was the highest-grossing combat sports event ever in Texas, pulling in $18.1 million. BetMGM said the bout was by far its most-bet boxing or mixed-martial arts fight, taking three times the number of bets and four times the money of any combat sport in its history. Logan Paul is a part-time performer for World Wrestling Entertainment. He has been wildly successful in WWE, having claimed the United States Championship and participated in several premium live events. The fight with his brother would be just weeks before WrestleMania, the biggest event on the pro wrestling calendar. It's unclear whether a fight between Logan Paul and former UFC champion Conor McGregor will happen. McGregor said in December that he was in "preliminary agreements" with the family of billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani to fight Logan Paul in India. <![CDATA[Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes will battle again in the postseason when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. The matchup will be the fourth in the playoffs between the two teams, making it the NFL's top quarterback rivalry since the turn of the decade. The previous three battles have mostly been filled with excitement, as both signal-callers played near-perfect games in the 2021 AFC divisional-round title. However, Mahomes' miraculous 13-second drive to force overtime and ensuing game-winning touchdown pass on the opening possession of the extra period gave him an edge over Allen. Mahomes got the next laugh over Allen in the postseason as well, with the Chiefs defeating the Bills in the 2023 playoffs. Entering Sunday, Mahomes is undefeated (3-0) all-time against Allen in the postseason, but Allen has the upper hand in the regular season, going 4-1 in those games. The most recent of those wins came in November 2024, with Allen helping the Bills defeat the Chiefs in their only loss that Mahomes started during the regular season. The Allen-Mahomes rivalry is certainly exciting, but it's far from the only individual rivalry that's brought juice in the NFL world over the years. That said, let's take a look at the best individual rivalries in sports history. 10. LeBron James vs. Steph Curry The NBA icons became unlikely rivals in the mid-2010s, with Curry leading the Golden State Warriors to prominence, while James gave his teams an NBA Finals floor from 2011-18. That set up a run of four consecutive years of James and Curry meeting in the NBA Finals. Curry got the first punch in that set, helping the Warriors take down an injured Cleveland Cavaliers team in 2015. James ultimately got the biggest rivalry punch a year later. After Curry led the Warriors to a record 73-win season to unanimously win MVP, James did something that had never been done in NBA history. He led the Cavs back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series, putting on remarkable performances in the final three games en route to winning Finals MVP. The individual rivalry might have lost some of its luster when the Warriors signed Kevin Durant in 2016, but the stars still delivered, with James putting up some memorable performances in both Finals losses to the Warriors. James and Curry notably became closer as the rivalry continued, and the duo have actually sparked rumors of possibly teaming up in the future. They got the chance to do that in the 2024 Summer Olympics, leading Team USA to a gold medal in possibly one of their final iconic basketball moments. 9. Alex Ovechkin vs. Sidney Crosby Taken with the first overall pick in consecutive drafts (2004-05), Ovechkin and Crosby quickly became the faces of the NHL. And with their teams being in the same division, they were set up for some epic battles over the years. The duo have gone head-to-head in the postseason four times over their respective careers. They each scored a hat trick in the same game in their first postseason head-to-head series in 2009. Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins dominated Ovechkin's Washington Capitals to win Game 7 of the 2009 conference semis that year. That win set the stage for the initial narratives surrounding the rivalry. Ovechkin typically won more individual accolades between the two, while Crosby led his team to more success, winning the Stanley Cup in 2009. Their next postseason battles also preceded championship years for the team that won the series. The Penguins got the better hand of the Capitals in the second in both the 2016 and 2017 seasons en route to winning the Stanley Cup. Finally, in 2018, Ovechkin got over the hump, making a pair of big plays to help bury the Penguins in Game 6 of their second-round matchup that season before winning his first Stanley Cup. 8. Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova Arguably two of the best tennis players of all time, Evert and Navratilova met 80 times over their respective careers. They nearly split the all-time series, with Navratilova holding a 43–37 edge. Navratilova won 14 of the 22 grand slam matches between the two. The elder Evert had the edge in the rivalry at first, winning the first three grand slam matches between the two, but Navratilova won nine of the next 11 grand slam matches, with eight of those wins being a championship match. Evert was able to win just her third grand slam title at the 1985 French Open in a match widely considered as one of the best women's tennis matches of all time. Both players bounced back from deficits before Evert won the deciding set, 7-5, in one of the last grand slam matches between the two. 7. Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning Before there was Allen-Mahomes, there was Brady-Manning. The duo actually began their careers as division rivals, with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts playing in the AFC East through 2001. As the two had polar opposite paths to NFL success, Brady won his first career start against Manning in 2001. Not long after, the two became the best at their position. Manning won co-MVP in 2003, but he wasn't able to play a clean game in the Colts' loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. A year later, Brady and the Patriots took down Manning & Co. in the divisional round after his record-setting season en route to their third Super Bowl win. As Brady enjoyed team success early on, Manning won everything but a Super Bowl throughout the first seven years of his career. In 2006, Manning was able to change that, leading the Colts back from a 21-3 deficit to take down Brady's Patriots in the conference title game en route to winning his first Super Bowl. Brady began to match Manning's individual achievements after the game, as the duo had some more epic regular-season games. The rivalry continued when Manning joined the Denver Broncos in 2012, with the star quarterbacks meeting twice in the postseason. Denver won both of those games, including the 2015 AFC Championship Game, to get the last laugh over Brady as he won the Super Bowl in his final NFL game two weeks later. 6. Wayne Gretzky vs. Mario Lemieux Gretzky and Lemieux never met in the postseason, but they defined the NHL in the late 1980s through much of the 1990s. Many regard Gretzky as the best player in NHL history, setting some marks and records that have become unobtainable. However, Lemieux was able to go toe-to-toe with Gretzky in the prime of their careers. He led the NHL in scoring four times between 1987-93, edging out Gretzky by a few points in some of those years. He also led the Penguins to two Stanley Cup titles over that time. Gretzky still has the majority of the most noteworthy scoring records in NHL history, but Lemieux was able to finish slightly behind him in points per game (1.921 to 1.883) and a consecutive streak for games with a point (51 to 46). 5. Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal Federer and Nadal met 40 times over their respective careers, with Nadal winning 24 of the matches and 10 of their 14 matches in grand slam tournaments. While Nadal got the best of Federer, that was always the case in the rivalry. Nadal won the French Open final over Federer twice, in 2006 and 2007, while Federer defeated Nadal in the Wimbledon final those years. In 2008, Nadal held serve on his dominant surface, beating Federer on clay to win the French Open final over him again. However, he was able to defeat Federer on his dominant surface later that year, defeating him on grass to win the Wimbledon final in a match that's widely considered the best in tennis history. Nadal needed extra games in the fifth set and nearly five hours to beat Federer to win his first Wimbledon title. 4. Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo The two soccer icons have been the faces of the sport since nearly the start of the century. In fact, either Messi or Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or every year from 2008 to 2017. Furthermore, those two made up the Ballon d'Or winner in all but two years between 2008 and 2023. While there hasn't been a major international match between the two, Messi and Ronaldo's peaks aligned when the former was at Barcelona and the latter was at Real Madrid. Over their 37 career matches against each other, they've each scored 23 goals, but Messi's teams went 17-11-9 over span, which included the 2008 Champions League final. Messi also helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022, giving him the edge over Ronaldo in international accomplishments. But Ronaldo's 919 career goals are more than Messi's 850, arguably making him the greatest goalscorer of all time. 3. Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier What happens when two of the best boxers of all time meet? Three of the greatest boxing matches in history. Ali and Frazier were undefeated ahead of their first meeting in 1971, with each staking a claim as the World Heavyweight Champion before going head-to-head in a match billed the "Fight of the Century." Frazier won that match in 1971 by a unanimous decision, but that just set the stage up for two bouts between the iconic boxers. In 1974, Ali got his revenge on Frazier. He won the same way that Frazier defeated him three years prior, winning by unanimous decision in a 12-round bout. The duo met again in 1975 in a match billed as the "Thrilla in Manilla," which Ali won due to Frazier's corner retirement in Round 14. 2. Bill Russell vs. Wilt Chamberlain Russell and Chamberlain emerged as basketball's dominant forces in the 1960s, with each dominating the MVP vote while one of them dominated in the title count. The two accounted for eight of the nine MVPs from 1959 to 1968, signifying that they were the two best players in the game. But when the postseason arrived, Russell's teams usually got the best of Chamberlain's. The Boston Celtics defeated Chamberlain's squads in the first five times the duo met in the postseason before the Philadelphia 76ers took down the Celtics in 1967 to end their eight-year title streak. Russell got the last laugh over Chamberlain, though. Russell helped the Celtics take down the Sixers in 1968, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series and reach the NBA Finals. A year later, Russell's Celtics outlasted Chamberlain's Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. In Game 7, Chamberlain departed early as Russell was able to lift Boston to a title in what wound up being his final game. 1. Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson If there was an individual rivalry that transcended sports, it was Bird-Magic. Seemingly everyone picked a side in the battles between the two sides in the 1980s. Before they made their mark in the NBA, the two went head-to-head in the 1979 national championship game. Johnson led Michigan State to a title over Bird's Indiana State squad. That set the rivalry up for when the two reached the NBA, forming a rivalry that helped re-energize the league. They each won titles early in their careers, but they never met head-to-head in the NBA Finals in 1984. Bird's Celtics won in seven games that year, with things notably getting heated in their Game 4 win. A year later, Johnson got his revenge, leading the Lakers to a six-game series win. Johnson also helped the Lakers beat the Celtics in 1987, with his junior sky hook to win Game 4 being a key moment in the rivalry. The bitter rivals admitted that they disliked each other for years, but they were able to form a bond when they filmed a commercial in between their NBA Finals matchups at Bird's mother's home. <![CDATA[EA Sports' beloved college football video game series won't be hitting the transfer portal any time soon. "College Football 26" will return for the 2025 season and will be available this summer, EA Sports announced on Jan. 16. EA Sports re-launched the popular video game series in the summer of 2024, marking the first time it had released the game since 2013. After 2.8 million players bought the game at launch, "College Football 25" became the highest-selling video game of all time in the United States in November. Players like Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty became instant fan favorites, due to their electric abilities in the game and on the field. With so much excitement around the game, it got us thinking — who are the greatest sports video game characters of all time? We looked back at games over the last couple of decades and picked out the most dominant athletes in that span. Did your favorite player make the list? Let's take a look: 10 best sports video game characters of all time 10. Ronaldinho, "FIFA 07" Plenty of FIFA legends through the years could represent EA Sports’ beloved soccer simulator on this list, but Ronaldinho’s superior offensive abilities propel him into this spot. The Brazil superstar had a rating of 90 or better in finishing, short passing, dribbling, ball control, acceleration, sprint speed and reaction. 9. Sunday Tiger Woods, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009" Really, Sunday Tiger from any 2000s edition would suffice. If your character was lucky enough to make the cut and face Sunday Tiger, you had to play a virtually perfect round of golf to stand a chance of beating him. EA Sports even leaned into Sunday Tiger’s God-like abilities by using a fan video of a glitch in "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008" in which the namesake character could walk on water and hit a chip shot from a lake, turning it into an incredible marketing campaign for the next edition of the game. 8. Michael Jordan, "NBA 2K11" Some of the characters in these games became overpowered superstars by accident. This edition of Jordan was anything but. The Chicago Bulls legend graced the cover of the 2010 release of the iconic basketball game and had several different modes centered around him, including one in which players could compete in a "Jordan Challenge" that let them simulate key moments from his career. There were eight retro versions of Jordan from different seasons of his career, and all eight of them had him rated at an unstoppable 99 overall. Jordan also starred in one of the most memorable sports video game opening sequences ever. 7. Peja Stojakovic, "NBA Ballers" If sweet-shooting NBA players who became video game juggernauts had a patron saint, it would be Stojakovic in this 2004 streetball simulator. The digital version of the Sacramento Kings swingman paved the way for a long line of NBA players in future basketball video games who, once you figured out their shot timing and favorite places to let it fly from beyond the arc, could not be contained. 6. Travis Hunter, "EA College Football 25" The first and only player to earn a 99 overall rating in one of the most anticipated games of the decade, Hunter is a cheat code in "EA College Football 25." The Heisman winner was given 99 acceleration, 99 awareness, 99 spectacular catch, 99 play recognition, 97 jumping, 97 change of direction, 97 catching, 95 speed, 95 juke move, 95 zone coverage and 90 man coverage. There probably has never been a football video game character to have several ratings in the 90s on both sides of the ball — which is apt for his unprecedented two-way play this past season. The Colorado receiver/cornerback finished the year with 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, along with 36 total tackles, 11 pass deflections, a forced fumble and four interceptions. 5. "Jon Dowd" (Barry Bonds), "MVP Baseball 2005" The folks at EA Sports had a problem. Barry Bonds, MLB’s consensus best player at the time, had pulled out of the MLB Players Association’s common licensing agreement. Thus, EA Sports could not use his name or likeness in "MVP Baseball 2005." It circumvented this by creating the fictional "Jon Dowd," a slugging, left-handed-hitting San Francisco Giants outfielder with a familiar build and swing. And Dowd, much like the real-life Bonds at the time, was a cheat code, routinely depositing virtual baseballs into a digital McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall in San Francisco. 4. Mike Tyson, "Punch-Out" Unlike the other names on this list, Tyson was not a playable character but instead was the final boss in this boxing game. The virtual Tyson is considered one of the most difficult video-game final bosses of all time thanks to his ability to, like the name suggests, knock players out with a single punch. 3. Bo Jackson, "Tecmo Bowl" The original unstoppable video game character, this version of Jackson is still considered the G.O.A.T. for sports video game fans of a certain age. It’s easy to see why. The pixelated Jackson was too fast and too strong for just about anyone else in the game to stop him, no matter what they did. And unlike the real-life Jackson, whose incredible two-sport professional career was cut short due to injuries, this Jackson could not get hurt. "Tecmo Bowl" Bo Jackson lives on in the cultural zeitgeist, including an appearance in the iconic animated sitcom "Family Guy" and a Kia commercial starring the actual Bo Jackson. 2. Pablo Sanchez, Backyard Sports With respect to Jon Dowd, Sanchez is the only truly fictional character on this list, but he deserves to be here after a decade across a litany of Backyard Sports titles. Sanchez is best known for his abilities in various Backyard Baseball editions. He was a true five-tool player, representing one of the best hitters and fastest runners in just about every edition of the game. When Millennials and even some older Gen Z gamers discuss their Backyard Sports memories, Sanchez is usually the first name they think of. 1. Michael Vick, "Madden 2004" The first true dual-threat quarterback of the modern Madden era, the current NFL on FOX analyst was simply impossible to stop in the game that bore his image on the cover. He was too fast when he took off running and too accurate as a passer to be contained by even the best defensive game plan. Nothing like Vick has been seen in Madden since then — which is by design. Madden developer Clint Oldenburg revealed in a 2016 interview that several features included in subsequent Madden editions, such as the popular "Hit Stick" and much less popular and since-discontinued "QB Vision," were added specifically to counteract Vick. It was as though they were Frankenstein trying to stop a monster of their own creation. Additionally, the Madden player ratings system has been changed significantly so that no player is overwhelmingly dominant at so many different facets like Vick was. Unfortunately for the real-life Vick, the Madden cover curse came to fruition that year, as he missed most of the 2003 NFL season due to a broken leg. Check out all of our Daily Rankers. <![CDATA[British heavyweight Tyson Fury has retired from boxing — again — one month after losing a rematch with Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. The 36-year-old Fury announced the decision in a short video posted on his Instagram account on Monday, which included a cryptic message. "Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing," Fury said. "It's been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it and I'm going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side." It was unclear why Fury made a reference to Turpin, a famed 18th century English highway robber and horse thief. Fury was upset with the unanimous decision when he lost the Dec. 21 rematch with Usyk in Saudi Arabia. However, Usyk landed 179 of 423 punches thrown (42%), while Fury landed 144 of his 509 punches, a 28% clip. Fury had acknowledged making mistakes, notably by showboating too much, when losing their first fight in Riyadh in May by split decision. British boxing fans had been hoping that Fury would next fight countryman Anthony Joshua, a bout that has been talked about for years but now looks unlikely to happen. Fury has announced his retirement before, however, notably on his 34th birthday in August 2022. But he was back fighting again two months later. In April of that same year, the self-styled "Gypsy King" had already suggested he would retire earlier after knocking out Dillian Whyte with a brutal uppercut in front of more than 94,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. But he never did and won two more fights, against Derek Chisora and Francis Ngannou — an MMA fighter making his boxing debut — before finally meeting his match in Usyk. Fury's record is 34-2-1, with 24 KOs. The losses to Usyk were the only defeats in Fury's career, which began in 2008 and included one draw against American boxer Deontay Wilder in 2018. After winning Ring magazine's Male Fighter of the Year award recently, Usyk thanked Fury in his own humorous way. The two became friends and spoke of their mutual respect. "My friend, greedy belly, thank you so much, you (are) great my opponent," Usyk said, raising a clenched right fist. Boxing promoter Frank Warren, who worked with Fury, told the BBC that he had not spoken to Fury prior to his retirement announcement. "If that's what he wants to do, that's great. He's done everything he can do. Probably been the best British heavyweight of his generation by far," Warren told BBC radio. "Two-time world champion, two closely fought fights against Usyk. He's got plenty of money, got his wits about him, got a lovely family." Reporting by The Associated Press. <![CDATA[UFC mega-star Conor McGregor took to social media a few weeks ago to announce that he won't be fighting UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. Instead, he'll try his hand at boxing again, and he announced it will be against influencer and WWE Superstar Logan Paul, the older brother of influencer and boxer Jake Paul. Despite the surprise, Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor is a match that has been churning in the rumor mill for some time, and it got us to thinking: If a Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match broke Netflix, would a bout between the younger Paul and McGregor break the internet? Paul-McGregor would certainly be more competitive in the ring, it would rile up both fighters’ rabid fan bases and, most importantly, the betting appetite would be an absolute boon for sportsbooks across America. Well, the fans got their wish. ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez reported on Monday that the Jake Paul and McGregor fight is now on the table for July, August, or September 2025. Not too long ago, I wrote a story for FOX Sports about the betting line for Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago’s mythical Christmas Eve match. We polled a group of bookmakers, bettors and industry experts to price the fight. Now it’s time to price Paul-McGregor. Let’s assume it’s a standard 12-round match, with three-minute rounds and 10-ounce gloves. Paul fought at 227 pounds against Tyson and McGregor hovers around 170 these days. So, let’s say they box around 195. Just typing out the fight parameters gets the juices flowing. The Paul-Tyson match drew 108 million viewers with a reported $80 million purse. Some experts believe Paul-McGregor has a bigger global impact, which could lead to a potential purse that reaches nine figures when the dust settles. You can almost hear the money printing. "It would be the biggest fight possible for boxing," Westgate SuperBook vice president of race and sports John Murray said from his Las Vegas office. "Paul -200 [risk $200 to win $100] seems fair," Murray continued. "That feels like a decent opening price. There’s no reason to go crazy high because there’s always so much McGregor money in these big fights. "195 pounds is a big weight for McGregor. I don’t know that Conor goes through the grind of a full training camp. He has so much money, and I’m not sure he has the desire anymore. If we’re talking boxing, Paul should probably be favored by more than -200, but people love betting on McGregor." It is worth remembering how popular McGregor was at the window leading up to his 2017 fight against undefeated superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even with Mayweather a perfect 49-0, McGregor was a magnet for public money. And price sensitivity? Pfft. Forget it. "You couldn’t stop people from betting McGregor," South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews recalled. "I was one of the first people to post that fight, and we opened Mayweather -2700. I think it closed at -500. "I watched the fight [with South Point owner Michael Gaughan]. Those first three rounds, I was a little nervous. One of the guys watching in the room knew boxing and kept saying everything was fine. But it’s not his couple hundred thousand dollars on the line, it’s mine! "We did pretty good on the fight." What would Andrews do with Paul-McGregor? "Oh God," he cracked. "I think I would open Paul -225, but I don’t really know. And McGregor has to put on 25 pounds? That’s not all muscle." "We don’t dabble in hypotheticals," Circa Sports director of operations Jeff Benson reminded me. "Given I like you, I’d say Paul would maybe be a slightly bigger favorite than the closing price of Paul-Tyson. This is me also thinking about it for six seconds." Jeff Davis, director of risk at Circa, despises hypotheticals more than anybody I’ve ever met, and even he was semi-intrigued by Paul-McGregor. "To be honest, I don’t know what this price should be off the top of my head," Davis admitted. "But this fight could actually happen, so I appreciate you not asking me for a ridiculous hypothetical." "Maybe Paul -150?" WynnBET senior trader Motoi Pearson guessed. "It helps that McGregor is not a 58-year-old man. That seems important." "Tyson was so old," Rampart Casino sportsbook director Duane Colucci added. "McGregor is a much bigger challenge. On the blind, I say Paul -125 just because of McGregor’s inactivity." "I think Paul’s around a -240 favorite," Golden Nugget executive sportsbook director Tony Miller forecasted. "He’s a bigger puncher. The fight won’t go the distance. McGregor will get all the public love and sharps will lay the price closer to fight time. We’ll probably all be rooting for Paul." "Jake Paul -175, Conor McGregor +155," Westgate SuperBook vice president of risk management Jeff Sherman predicted. "In these exhibition bouts, you tend to see plenty of plus-price support show up." Some bettors I know would love Paul at a cheap price. "The realistic line should be closer to -340," professional bettor David Woodley argued. "Paul is in his prime, and he’s been boxing for years now. McGregor is also like 5-foot-8 and would have to put on 30 pounds. My head is spinning thinking about that. I would bet the farm on Paul at -200." "I think it should be Paul -350," Vegas oddsmaker and fighting analyst Nick Kalikas said. "Conor in his prime is a different story. Conor’s recent personal battles don’t help. He’s also inactive and a much smaller fighter. Paul has way more boxing experience now, and he’s better conditioned." Others would provide McGregor resistance at big numbers. "I would bet McGregor at 4s for sure, maybe at 3s," poker superstar Phil Hellmuth said. "Craftiness has to count for something." Last but not least, a reality check. "The fight is not real," longtime bookmaker Dave Sharapan said. "It’s like the line in Casino. ‘You didn’t see the scam? You didn’t see what was going on?’ Well, I can’t see it. And I would hate to book it. I’d rather see you fight Jake." Fair enough, Dave. Fair enough. Jake Paul -200. Conor McGregor +175. Sportsbooks were content with Jake Paul’s victory over Mike Tyson. Multiple shops reported massive support for "The Baddest Man on the Planet" throughout the week of the fight and liability builds fast when there’s a popular underdog involved. Ironically enough, there aren’t many more comfortable positions for a sportsbook than needing a boxing favorite to deliver. Let's also not get it twisted: Tyson nostalgia affected the market. Memories of early knockouts from years past lingered in the minds of many and, believe it or not, a Tyson first-round knockout was the most-popular bet at several shops. The day of the fight, Circa Sports told my FOX Sports teammate Patrick Everson they needed [Paul] "for our lungs, and we’re comfortable with that." You could tell almost right away Tyson wouldn’t win. "Paul’s size, power and consistency were impressive," professional bettor Brandon Wittmyer said. "He was truly underrated by the betting market. Paul has trained well and really improved over the last six fights or so. "Paul could’ve been -10000 against Tyson." McGregor's announcement comes just weeks after a civil court jury in Ireland ruled in favor of a woman, Nikita Hand, who said McGregor sexually assaulted her in December 2018. <![CDATA[Conor McGregor says he's in negotiations to fight Logan Paul in a boxing exhibition in India. McGregor said early Tuesday morning on social media he's in "preliminary agreements" with the family of billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani to fight Paul. "I have agreed," McGregor said. McGregor also said that rumors of a potential bout with Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight champion Ilia Topuria were false. McGregor said he would make his "return to the Octagon" after his boxing exhibition with Paul. Topuria also denied any speculation he'd fight McGregor. "The rumors of bout with mchicken are false," Topuria said on social media. "I don't fight nor am I interested in fighting with a rapist." McGregor's announcement comes less than a month after a civil court jury in Ireland ruled he must pay nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) to a woman who said he "brutally raped and battered" her at a Dublin hotel penthouse in December 2018. Nikita Hand said the assault left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. The 36-year-old McGregor was once the biggest UFC star, but he hasn't fought since injuring his leg during a bout with Dustin Poirier in July 2021. He pulled out of a scheduled UFC 303 match with Michael Chandler last June and said later that it was due to a broken toe. Paul is a YouTuber-turned-boxer. He previously fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition, among others. His brother Jake Paul won a unanimous decision over 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson last month in Arlington, Texas. The Jake Paul-Tyson fight was the first live sports event on Netflix, which announced that the bout was viewed in 60 million households. Reporting by The Associated Press.]]>

<![CDATA[What happens when you pit a man who won his first heavyweight title nine presidential terms ago against a young, social media influencer who is relatively new to the boxing game? You get an absolute spectacle, which should provide plenty of chances for bettors to cash in. In late winter, it was announced that Mike Tyson and Jake Paul would square off in a boxing match originally scheduled for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. That date got postponed, and now the two will face off tonight — Friday, Nov. 15. The match will stream on Netflix at 8pm ET. ODDS TO WIN BOXING MATCH: * Jake Paul: -235 (bet $10 to win $14.26 total)Mike Tyson: +190 (bet $10 to win $29 total) *odds as of 11/15/24 On April 29, the fight was officially sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, meaning the bout will be professional and go on both fighters' official records. The early hypothetical odds at DraftKings Sportsbooks had Paul as the heavy favorite at -360, most likely because he is thirty years younger. Tyson, who was +300 at the time, is 58 years old. In combat sports, that type of disadvantage is often too much to overcome. Then, in May, Paul's odds sat at -180 with Tyson's at +135. However, just hours before the fight, the social media star has seen his odds shorten to -235. Tyson's have lengthened to +190. Back in March, FOX Sports' Keyshawn Johnson said he believes Paul has a lot to fear when he steps into the ring with Tyson. "[Jake Paul] is in the ring with a dude who did that for a living," Johnson said on "Undisputed." If you [Skip Bayless] get on a football field with me, it's not going to be the same because I did that for a living. If I try to be a journalist like you all the time, you're probably going to win. But, he is going up against a guy that all he did for his life was was box. "I don't know Jake Paul's chin level, I don't know if he can take a shot or whatever the case may be, but Mike Tyson is not going to lose to him." Who are you backing in the battle of the ages? FOX Sports will update you as the story unfolds!]]>

<![CDATA[The highly anticipated bout between YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, and 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will stream globally on Friday night and be available to Netflix's 280 million subscribers at no additional cost. Netflix will broadcast the bout in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French and German. The fight was originally scheduled for July 20 but was delayed after Tyson had a medical episode on a plane and needed time to recover from a stomach ulcer. On April 29, the fight was officially sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, meaning the bout will be professional and go on both fighters' official records. As of Friday afternoon, Paul's odds sit at -235 with Tyson's at +190. "Mike Tyson is not going to lose to him," FOX Sports' Keyshawn Johnson said in March. Most Valuable Promotions is handling the production of Friday's bout. The modern-day U.S. mark of 4.6 million viewers from the 2015 bout between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao could be attainable to surpass. "We believe the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight could be the most watched boxing match ever given ease of access and NFLX's (Netflix's) large global subscriber base, and it should attract Ad Tier subs, viewers, and dollars," JP Morgan Chase analyst Doug Anmuth said in his analyst note according to CNBC Pro. "Netflix is increasingly focused on sports entertainment, events, and shoulder content, and we expect a bigger push into live sports over time, particularly as negotiating leverage shifts in NFLX's direction." Netflix has used live sports as support programming for documentaries and series it airs. "Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson", a three-part docuseries previewing the fight card, was ranked second Thursday night among Netflix's most-viewed shows. Last November's Netflix Cup, where Formula 1 drivers were paired with PGA golfers in a match-play format, brought together famous figures from "Drive to Survive" and "Full Swing," The March 3 Netflix Slam exhibition match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz tied in with "Point Break" and a documentary series about Alcaraz that will air next year. The NFL elected to partner with Netflix for a Christmas Day doubleheader of games because two series — "Quarterback" and "Receiver" — were among Netflix's top 10 series globally. The Associated Press contributed to this report. [Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? <![CDATA[Rocky Balboa’s victory over Ivan Drago in Russia on Christmas Day 1985 is one of the greatest upsets in the history of American (cinematic) sports. Even though Balboa was boxing’s reigning world heavyweight champion, he was certainly the betting underdog against the bigger, stronger, younger and chemically-enhanced Drago. The undefeated "Siberian Bull" had at least six inches and more than 70 pounds on "The Italian Stallion." That’s like pitting LeBron James against Steph Curry in the squared circle. And let’s also not forget that Drago killed former heavyweight champ Apollo Creed in the ring earlier that year. The perception was crystal clear: Drago was boxing’s next big superstar, and he would destroy anything in his path. But how would that perception have played out at the books? Since we’ve never seen publicized betting odds on Rocky vs. Drago, and since we just wrapped up Fourth of July weekend — the most patriotic of all holidays — I decided to round up a slew of bookmakers, bettors and industry experts to properly price the opening line for the incident that truly ended the Cold War: the main event of "Rocky IV." Here are their stories. "It was an unsanctioned, 15-round fight, so Nevada Gaming wouldn’t let us accept wagers," Westgate SuperBook executive director John Murray cracked. Seriously, though … what’s the line? "You don’t want to go too high on a heavyweight bout," he resumed. "I would’ve opened Drago about -1000 (bet $1,000 to win $100) given his size, age and home advantage. The public would’ve hammered the plus-money on Rocky, and wise guy support would've shown for the favorite. "We probably would’ve closed around Drago -400 and gotten buried. I would’ve gotten yelled at the next morning." Bookmakers have explained to me for years how the betting public loves to bet underdogs in boxing matches and UFC fights. That’s because most people don’t want to bet $100 to win $10; they want to bet $100 to win $750. But when creating a real-life boxing market, a bookmaker has to be careful about being too cheap on the favorite. There’s always big money ready to pounce on a perceived bargain. "Sharps would’ve buried me at -450 on Drago," WynnBET senior trading manager Alan Berg explained. If a sportsbook had tried to set the line lower on the Russian to balance out the action on both sides, then smart, influential bettors with enough cash to make an impact would have been all over Drago. "I would’ve opened it Drago -1000," Berg said. "I would definitely want to write my first bet on him. And you keep trying to shade under the Balboa price. Remember, the market would’ve been overrating Drago’s exhibition over a washed Creed." As you'd expect, there was no doubt that Drago would've been favored against Rocky. The only question was, how big could the price be? That -1000 price on Drago was a fairly common starting point for many of the experts, with some coming in even a tad higher. "Does somebody actually think Rocky should be favored?" former Las Vegas oddsmaker Aaron Kessler responded to my question. "Drago -1100. He killed a guy! And it’s not like Rocky was a dominant fighter." "Drago is a monster favorite," US Bookmaking director of operations Robert Walker declared. "He would be at least -1500. And we would’ve got crushed." "Drago has to be a massive favorite," professional bettor Rob Pizzola opined. "Say around -1000. Rocky is at the twilight of his career, and Drago is much younger. Huge home advantage in Mother Russia, too. And Drago literally murdered the man who went the distance with Rocky twice. "It would’ve been like Mike Tyson in his prime against a gas can." Now, a -1000 bet on which you risk $100 to win $10 sounds like a lot, especially if you're not a regular sports bettor. But we see even bigger favorites — and underdogs — all the time in non-scripted sports. A common mistake would be to compare Rocky’s upset over Drago to Buster Douglas' shocking the world and beating the aforementioned Tyson, for example. Not so fast. Douglas opened as high as 42-to-1 (or +4200) to knock off Iron Mike. Rocky would’ve never, ever been priced that high; even at books where he would have been the biggest possible underdog, Balboa was just shy of 10-to-1 (+1000) in this discussion. "It honestly reminds me more of the first Tyson-Holyfield fight, when Evander knocked Tyson out," Caesars senior risk manager Rich Zanco said. "Tyson was invincible, and Holyfield had heart problems, but money kept pouring in on the underdog. I believe Holyfield opened at +1800 and was bet down to +700. "So I think it’s very fair to start at Drago -1400 and Balboa +800. The fight being in Russia was massive. And Balboa was clearly past his prime after getting lit up by Clubber Lang years before." From Drago -1000 to -1500, all of these fine folks were in roughly the same neighborhood with their lines. At this point, you’re probably thinking to yourself, "Wow, these guys are bad at their jobs. Don’t they all know Rocky won the fight?!" Well, yeah, but hindsight is 20/20. We've all seen the movie (sorry for the spoiler if you haven’t). When you’re making and maneuvering a real-life boxing market, though, you obviously don’t know the end result. Still, there were a handful of bookmakers who believed, even without that knowledge, that Drago would not have been such a massive favorite in the battle that changed the world. "Drago is a small favorite," Westgate SuperBook senior risk manager Rex Beyers projected. "He killed an out-of-shape Apollo Creed. Rocky still had the belt and got into tremendous, tip-top shape. I would have been cheaper than everyone else. "You also have to remember that no one bet on sports in Russia in the 1980s," Beyers continued. "And most square Americans would have never been able to bring themselves to bet on Drago. He beat nothing but ham sandwiches and other amateurs in Europe before finishing Creed." "Drago had to be -160," South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews said. "I only saw the first two Rockys, though, so I’m in the dark. But never underestimate the heart of a champion." "Drago -180," Rampart Casino sportsbook director Duane Colucci said. "It’s Rocky, brother. Enough said." "I’m guessing Drago -400," Golden Nugget executive sportsbook director Tony Miller. "You have to start at that number because if you open any lower, you’ll just write it all the way up anyway." And, of course, some … weren’t so helpful. "I don’t think you realize the level of my hatred for theoreticals," Circa Sports assistant sportsbook manager Jeff Davis said. "You’re asking the wrong guy," Circa Sports sportsbook manager Chris Bennett said. "I don’t watch many movies. That was ‘Rocky IV,’ right?" Womp. It’s OK, though. We definitely have enough input to crunch this price. Drago -180 is way too low, and Drago -1500 is way too high. I’m more than willing to meet in the middle between the two factions. Yet reflecting on what Berg said about sharps burying him at -450, you certainly would have to start higher than that. "Drago -700 and Rocky +450 is the perfect opening line," legendary Las Vegas oddsmaker Kenny White said. "That split gets you good two-way action, and then you move the money from there. "But Drago is bigger, faster and stronger. And he has 35-plus years of Russian revenge on the mind. After the first limit bet on Drago, I’ll gladly move my market to -1000 and +650." So there you have it. That’s the price. Ivan Drago (-700) vs. Rocky Balboa (+450). A $10 bet on Rocky would have won you $45, plus your $10 back. Bump that up to a $100 wager, and you're profiting $450. No matter which way you shake it, Ivan Drago would’ve been a sizable betting favorite against Rocky Balboa heading into the Christmas Day extravaganza. As much as I love my country and enjoyed Rocky training like a maniac in frozen Siberia, it’s no secret that Rocky’s biggest edge was Sylvester Stallone writing the flick. Yo, Adrian … we did it. <![CDATA[Mike Tyson's fight with Jake Paul is now set for Nov. 15 after the former world heavyweight champion fell ill on a flight last month. The fight was originally set for July 20 in Arlington, Texas, home to the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, and will be aired on Netflix. Tyson became nauseous and dizzy during the final hour of a flight from Miami to Los Angeles. His plane was met by first responders, while Tyson’s camp attributed the episode to an ulcer problem and said he would need to do light training for several weeks. Tyson turns 58 on June 30. "Although we had to postpone the fight, I will resume training shortly," Tyson said in a statement released by Netflix. "I am thankful to the medical staff that treated me and to MVP, Netflix, and AT&T Stadium for working diligently to find the best reschedule date for all parties. "While we have a new date, the result will be the same no matter when we fight. Jake Paul is getting knocked out." The fight was originally slated for a Saturday, but will be held on a Friday as the Cowboys prepare to host the Houston Texans on Nov. 18 for Monday Night Football. "Our team has worked diligently with all parties involved to reschedule this monumental fight to a date that ensures both Jake Paul and Mike Tyson are fully prepared, with equal training time, as well as allowing us to keep the event at AT&T stadium in the midst of the Cowboys season," said Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions. Tyson hasn’t fought professionally since June 2005, but he has been training regularly for several years. He fought Roy Jones Jr. in an entertaining exhibition in Los Angeles in November 2020. <![CDATA[Mike Tyson's fight with Jake Paul has been postponed after the 57-year-old Tyson fell ill on a flight last weekend. Tyson and Paul said Friday that they'll announce a new fight date next week. They were scheduled to meet July 20 in Arlington, Texas. Tyson fell ill on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles last Sunday, and his flight was met by first responders. Tyson's camp attributed the episode to an ulcer problem. "During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations," the fight's promoters said in a statement. Tyson hasn’t fought professionally since June 2005, but he has been training regularly for several years. He fought Roy Jones Jr. in an entertaining exhibition in November 2020. "My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to my full training schedule soon," Tyson said in the statement. "Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out — and out of boxing for good. "I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year." Tickets already purchased for the fight at the Dallas Cowboys’ home stadium will be honored on the new fight date, promoters said. The 27-year-old Paul is a YouTube star who has forged a successful prizefighting career mostly by taking on mixed martial artists and journeymen boxers. "I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night," Paul said. "My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake: When he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish." <![CDATA[Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury by split decision on Sunday to become the first undisputed heavyweight boxing champion in 24 years. Usyk (22-0) added Fury's WBC title to his own WBA, IBF and IBO belts with a spectacular late rally highlighted by a ninth-round knockdown in a back-and-forth bout between two previously unbeaten heavyweight champs. Two judges favored Usyk, 115-112 and 114-113, while the third gave it to Fury, 114-113. "It's a great time. It's a great day," Usyk said. Usyk started quickly, but then had to survive while the confident, charismatic Fury dominated the middle rounds. Usyk rallied in the final rounds, just as the Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist has done so many times in his career, taking control with a dominant eighth and nearly stopping Fury in the ninth. Usyk hurt Fury (34-1-1) with a left hand and eventually sent him sprawling into a corner in the final seconds of the round, getting credit for a knockdown right before Fury was saved by the bell. Fury made it to the 10th, but he struggled to mount a consistent attack after nearly getting stopped. "Thank you so much to my team," Usyk said while fighting back tears in the ring. "It's a big opportunity for me, for my family, for my country. Slava Ukraini!" Fury kissed Usyk on the head after the final bell. Fury also said he wants the rematch in October. "I believe I won that fight," Fury said. "I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them, and I believe it was one of those what-can-you-do, one of them ... decisions in boxing. We both put on a good fight, best we can do. "You know, his country is at war, so people are siding with a country at war. But make no mistake, I won that fight, in my opinion, and I'll be back. I've got a rematch clause." The 37-year-old Usyk is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis held the honor for five months in 1999 and 2000. He is also now the lineal heavyweight champion by beating Fury, who beat Wladimir Klitschko to earn that distinction in 2015. Usyk is 6 inches shorter than the 6-foot-9 Fury, and he weighed in 30 pounds lighter than the hulking British star this week. The size difference didn't matter to Usyk, who has used his athleticism and skill to counter every challenge he has faced since moving up from cruiserweight to heavyweight in 2019. Usyk landed 41% of his 407 punches, while Fury landed just 31.7% of his 496 punches, according to CompuBox statistics. Usyk both threw (260 to 210) and landed (122 to 95) more power punches. Usyk upset Anthony Joshua to win three title belts in 2021, and he kept them through two defenses while angling for the ultimate payday of a fight against Fury in Saudi Arabia. Usyk has now joined the elite club of fighters who held every major world championship belt at heavyweight — and he is the first to do it in the four-belt era, which began in 2007. The list of undisputed champions includes Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson. The most recent undisputed heavyweight champ was Lewis, who beat Evander Holyfield in late 1999 and enjoyed a five-month reign. He soon lost a title because of the territorial squabbles that have beset boxing for the past quarter-century and routinely prevented the biggest fights from happening. Fury and Usyk both asked for this matchup, and they finally got together in the ring largely because of the involvement of Saudi Arabia, which made the financial rewards simply too great for the fighters' typically recalcitrant promoters and the sanctioning bodies to reject. Fury will reportedly make more than $100 million for the bout. To reach the lucrative Western pay-per-view audience, the bout didn't begin until 1:45 a.m. on Sunday morning at Kingdom Arena. <![CDATA[Can a heavyweight star from the UFC thrive in the sport of boxing? Later today, Francis Ngannou will attempt to prove he has the chops to do so when he faces former world champion Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia. Joshua is looking to get back into title contention after losing his heavyweight belts to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021. He has won his last three fights, with his most recent coming on December 23 against Otto Wallin. He has a professional record of 27-3. Meanwhile, this will be the second professional boxing match for Ngannou, who left the UFC as the undisputed heavyweight champion after his last fight in January of 2022. His first contest was a non-title fight against WBC heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury. In that bout, he fought valiantly as a +1080 underdog, and even knocked the "Gypsey King" on his rump in Round 3, before losing a split decision to the champ. After almost securing one of the biggest upsets in fight history, he now lays his sights on Anthony Joshua. So, who should be favored in this duel between AJ and the man known as "The Predator"? Let's dive into the odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. ODDS TO WIN BOXING MATCH* Anthony Joshua: -340 (bet $10 to win $12.94 total) Francis Ngannou: +260 (bet $10 to win $36 total) *odds as of 3/8/2024 It's no surprise that Joshua is the betting favorite considering he is a classically trained boxer still in his prime, but the odds definitely consider Ngannou more of a threat than they did before his impressive debut against Fury. And the books aren't the only ones excited by Ngannou's introduction into the sweet science. None other than rap superstar Drake has dropped a hefty sum on the Cameroonian heavyweight. Drake posted his betting slip on Instagram Friday, which shows he placed a $615,000 wager on Ngannou which would net him $1,906,500 total if "The Predator" can deliver a victory. Will Francis be able to execute against another top heavyweight in back-to-back performances? If so, Drake may be singing a sweet tune all the way to the bank. So who are you backing in this crossover extravaganza? FOX Sports will update you as the story unfolds!]]>

But it's a lot more fun to talk about what we'd most like to see on the gridiron, diamond, hardwood and beyond than what we think will actually happen — and if this writer was any good at betting big on bold sporting predictions, I'd be doing that for a living instead of this. So here we are then, with the FOX Sports Insider 2024 Wish List. If all these things go down, it's not a guarantee we'll all be happy — sports fandom is a fickle and tricky thing — but we will have been resoundingly entertained. More arguments, not less Florida State fans might disagree, but conjecture, controversy and downright anger over the selections of a committee are an integral part of what keeps college football buzzing with such passionate fervor. You think expanding to 12 teams will settle all the debates? Not even close; in fact, expect to see a whole lot more of them, especially over the final few spots. Be honest now, would you have it any other way? A special Super Bowl — again We're being spoiled. No really, we are. In the last seven Super Bowls, we have seen the greatest comeback of all time, Tom Brady winning an historic seventh ring, Patrick Mahomes spearheading one thrilling fightback and surviving another nail-biter, plus a Rams-Bengals showdown that isn't remembered as fondly as it should. It wasn't always like this. For much of its history, the biggest game of all was often a drab affair, usually one-sided. Long may this trend continue. A healthy Aaron Rodgers Love him or hate him, not many people have the sheer power of personality to have been one of the NFL's biggest stories, even in a season that ended after four snaps. Rodgers never fails to give us something to talk about — but when he's actually, you know, playing, it's that much better. A USWNT bounceback The 2023 Women's World Cup was one of the most exciting sports events of the year — period. But the performance of the United States was the most disappointing thing about it. The USWNT needs a revival — and in Emma Hayes it has an esteemed new coach to try to spark one. The Olympics in Paris is a giant opportunity for the group to remind us of its potential for dominance, but beware, the international field is getting stronger. [Emma Hayes has already won over USWNT: 'Emma will take us there'] Ding, ding, dinger Let's wish for Shohei Ohtani to knock it out of the park after moving to the Los Angeles Dodgers, both literally and figuratively. With only his batting to focus on — apart from counting all that (future) money — could the Japanese superstar put together an MLB tilt of 60 homers or more? At risk of stating the blindingly obvious, he's a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and even if you find the Dodgers and their extravagant wealth irksome, chances are you'll be rooting for this guy. The Cowboys show rolls onward The Dallas Cowboys are incredibly consistent at one thing and one thing only. Being inconsistent. Even when Dak Prescott puts together a metronomic and mightily accomplished season like this, you never know whether to trust the Cowboys or not. Is that a source of frustration for Jerry Jones and the team's ever-hungry fans? Yes. Is it all part of what keeps Dallas as football's most intriguing team for everyone else? You bet. A Berhalter boost About six years ago, former USA men's head coach Bruce Arena stated that he expected the national team, by the time this country hosts the World Cup in 2026, to be a contender to win it. No one is being so bold these days, and the priority for head coach Gregg Berhalter in 2024 is to get his team playing confidently with the big show two years away. This year's biggest test will come in the Copa América, against a stacked field of South America's best talent. [2024 Copa América: Predicting the USMNT's 23-man roster] Some victories, please When extraordinary streaks continue, either good or bad, it draws us in, which is why the Detroit Pistons are the NBA team everyone is currently paying attention to. Heading into the New Year, they'll have a fresh start after ending a 29-game losing streak on Saturday. The Pistons' record-setting skid was both statistically unfeasible and flat-out gory. But enough was enough. There are some promising young players, including Cade Cunningham, on the Pistons roster. Let's hope the sporting gods bestow a few wins upon them. Quickly. [Detroit Pistons losing streak: Tracking NBA consecutive loss record, lines] A heavyweight boxing boss Boxing has gone nearly 24 years without an undisputed heavyweight champion, the last being Lennox Lewis. The coming year should produce another one at last, but as this is boxing, you can never be too sure. Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are scheduled to fight for all the marbles in Saudi Arabia next month. This is a slightly oversimplified request, but let's just hope the darn thing actually goes ahead, after a long delay and a proposed December matchup fell apart at the negotiating table. A five-ringed circus It has been a long, long time since the Olympic Games took place in its normal sense. The 2020 Tokyo Games were rescheduled to 2021 and both that event, and the Winter Games in Beijing in 2022, were unrecognizable from what we've come to expect. Paris is poised to put on a spectacular show and should give a reminder that for a short window every few years, the Olympics still holds a special kind of magic. The beefed-up Big Ten There isn't enough space here to unpack everything that's happening with college football, and yes, we're not blind to the fact that there are schools that have suffered through realignment as well as those who will benefit. But it's hard not to look at the beefed-up Big Ten, with its new arrivals and elimination of divisions, and not get excited. With a West Coast influx on the way, here's wishing that it lives up to the hype. It's hard to imagine that it won't. <![CDATA[Sports media (this column included) likes its rhymes and nicknames and catchy bits of wordplay, and some snippets of lyrical mischief are just too good to avoid. Which is how, any time a team or collection of teams from the Eastern part of North America lands upon an especially potent run of form, we get treated to the term "Beasts from the East" in headlines, tweets, news bulletins and more. On the flip side, a particularly shiny season for a squad from the other coast prompts multiple usages of something like the "Best of the West." Before we get sidetracked by debating the ingenuity or otherwise of the sports journalism industry, let's just say this: there are a heck of a lot of "beasts" around right now. Across the major American sports, plus a few slightly more fringe ones for good measure, there is currently an overwhelming trend favoring conferences and divisions that happen to be geographically situated on the right-hand side of the map. With apologies to Marshawn Lynch for poaching his iconic term, the Philadelphia Eagles are in full-fledged Beast Mode at present, coming off narrowly missing out on the Super Bowl, signing Jalen Hurts to a whopper of a five-year contract, and acing — by most neutral analytics — the NFL Draft. The Eagles were the standard-bearer for the NFC East (until recently bad enough to be monikered as the NFC Least), but they were far from the only ones to have a profitable campaign in 2022. Behind them, the Dallas Cowboys racked up a 12-5 record, Brian Daboll coached the New York Giants to their best year since 2016, while all three not only reached the postseason but also the divisional round, the first time three teams from a single division had managed that feat since 1997. In MLB, the American League East is similarly mighty, headlined by the Tampa Bay Rays, who began the campaign with a 13-0 tear, triumphed in 14 straight at home, are spurred by the lively brilliance of Randy Arozarena and Wander Franco, and as of early Wednesday sat pretty at an MLB best 24-6. Following along, the Baltimore Orioles are cruising along merrily at 20-9 and while no one ever feels sorry for the New York Yankees, it must be a somewhat unfortunate feeling to be 16-15 and yet stuck at the bottom of a five-team division. "(We're) taking care of our own business … for a good part of the season until you really have to start looking at standings, but it is pretty interesting how this division has been on a pretty good roll," Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters. There isn't much of a cohesive argument to make as to why the East is shining across all sports, but within the microeconomies of each individual division or conference there is some microeconomy at play. With the NFC East weakened for so long and the NFL postseason system rewarding division winners with a home game, the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Washington Commanders were all incentivized to strengthen in recent offseasons. The AL East is always likely to be strong due to the heavy spending of the Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, so when the Rays thrive while spending a third or half as much as those teams, the division resembles a behemoth. Seriously though, what is going on? Have the moons aligned strangely and created a special, mystical force across the Eastern time zone? Has being subject to so much sunshine and surrounded by so many good-looking people proven to be an immutable distraction for those in the West? Or is (hint: the answer is probably yes, if we're being honest), the whole thing a monumental coincidence that just so happened to go a certain way? It's not slowing down, though. In the NBA, the three best records in the regular season were all from the Eastern Conference — Milwaukee, Boston, Philadelphia. In the NHL, the same thing, courtesy of the Bruins, Hurricanes and the Devils. In each of those sports the hottest postseason underdog also comes from the East, the geographically adjacent Miami Heat and Florida Panthers. During college hoops' season of Madness the overwhelming voice of calm came from overall champion UConn, hailing from a conference titled, you guessed it, the Big East. You can even take this to boxing, where in one of the biggest fights of the year Baltimore's Gervonta Davis stopped Los Angeles' Ryan Garcia. Or to Major League Soccer, where the top two points scorers so far this season are from the Eastern Conference, while the two lowest come from the West. We've seen quirks like this within individual sports before, but when I took a straw poll of sage old-time reporters, no one can remember it crossing every sport simultaneously, or anything close to what's happening now. Are we so sure there isn't something more to it? Something in the air? Tectonic plate shifts? I'm just spitballing; I don't know how those things work either. Answers on a postcard, please, and if the ones mailed from the Atlantic states arrive at our L.A. offices first, well, then we'll really know something is up. These are peculiar times indeed and the nature of such things is that by the time they become so noticeable that you start talking about them, like we just did, it usually means the wind of sporting momentum is ready to shift the other way. <![CDATA[Haley and Hanna Cavinder have been among the biggest beneficiaries of name, image and likeness in college athletics. The 22-year-old twin sisters, who spent this past season playing at Miami and helping lead the Hurricanes to the Elite Eight as a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, announced last week they decided to forgo their remaining year of eligibility to pursue life after basketball. It appears the Cavinder twins have found their next venture, revealing that they’ve joined Jake Paul’s content network, Betr. The gambling and media company announced an exclusive partnership with the Cavinders, who are set to join the company as equity partners, content creators and creative directors. "We are thrilled to partner with the Cavinder twins, who have already accomplished so much and are just scratching the surface of their potential," Betr founder and CEO Joey Levy said in a statement." According to the release, the Cavinders will bring their podcast "Twin Talk," over to the Betr network, as well as serve as on-air talent for the company, creating female-centric sports content. They will also be making regular appearances on Betr's flagship series, "BS w/ Jake Paul." The 5-foot-6 twin sisters rose to fame during their time in college by building massive followings on TikTok and YouTube, as well as other social media platforms. They spent their first three years in college at Fresno State before deciding to transfer to Miami last season. Haley started all 35 games for the Hurricanes this past season, averaging 12.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while Hanna came off the bench for the team, putting up 3.8 points, 1.6 assists and 1.3 rebounds per contest. They helped the Hurricanes upset No. 1 seed Indiana and No. 4 seed Villanova in this year’s NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion LSU. Read more:]]>

<![CDATA[Jake Paul is down. For the first time since the start of his bombastic, polarizing, unexpected and – admit it now, increasingly intriguing – foray into boxing, the punching You-Tuber has tasted defeat. Paul lost to Tommy Fury in a split decision eight-rounder on the outskirts of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, which you were already aware of, assuming you went anywhere near any form of social media as the final rounds of the weekend closed in. Despite the relative inexperience of both men – Fury is now 9-0 (4 KOs), Paul 6-1 – it was a bout that attracted more eyeballs, across more platforms, than virtually any other contest the sport has to offer right now. Of course, that very fact has been held up by the traditionalists as some kind of disaster and scandal, the idea that hype, hoopla and celebrity can be greater generators of interest that pure, resolute pugilistic skill. But those naysayers are, like they have been from the very beginning, missing the point. The simple fact is that fights carry far more interest when there is a story attached. Floyd Mayweather's fighting style was largely defensive and dull, but he did a masterful job of turning himself into a cash-making machine when he switched tack from being "Pretty Boy Floyd" to "Money Mayweather," with its brash, boastful persona. Paul has taken things to an extreme level, leveraging the power of his online following, ramping up the antics, gamifying the trash talk. His primary motive has been to garner attention for himself and line his own pockets, but his presence has also meant millions of people exposed to boxing who otherwise would not have been. So what now? Losses stall momentum for emerging fighters, therefore it is theoretically possible that this is the beginning of the end for Paul as a boxer, but it doesn't seem particularly likely. For a start, there was no disgrace to be had in the loss. Fury is the kind of real boxer that the critics have been screaming for Paul to fight. Brother of heavyweight superstar Tyson Fury, Tommy Fury has been fighting since he was 6 years old. Sure, Fury's record was padded with a series of victories against unaccomplished victims, but that's simply what happens in the fight game when it comes to elevating any kind of prospect. Paul lost via a split on the scorecards, but any controversy over the decision is a nonsense. Paul deserved credit, and his performance is worthy of the money-spinning rematch that is contractual obligated and will likely follow, but it was the correct result, despite the poor overall performance from referee Hector Afu. Afu was seemingly intent on becoming part of the action and docked Paul a point for a blow to the back of the head late, when a warning would have been more circumspect. By the end, however, Fury had landed as many power shots as Paul did total punches. Neither Afu's intervention, nor the late knockdown (was it a slip) that sent Fury to the canvas could change the outcome, just as the outcome probably did nothing to stem Paul's fight career. There is money to be made because people will watch, whether he fights social media star KSI, who previously squared off against his brother Logan Paul, or if he takes on more former MMA star like Ben Askren and Anderson Silva, or if he fights a kind of hybrid like on Sunday. Fury has boxing chops, but came with the added bonus of having a background in reality TV and a strong inbuilt following. Even though the WBC announced, in a shameless exercise in opportunistic self-promotion, that it would place the winner of the Paul-Fury bout in the top 15 of its cruiserweight rankings, that's not where Paul's future lay anyway. A gradual slog up the ratings list, before an eventual shot at a title? That was never part of his blueprint. His approach has always been about what get people talking the most – and make the most money. What the purists don't seem to get is that this has always been boxing's way, right back to the fight game's earliest history. "I've already won in every single way in life," Paul said afterward. "I made it further than I ever thought I would, and beyond. This is a humbling experience. I'll take it on the chin and come back." So yes, Paul is down. But he's not out, not yet. With estimated earnings in excess of $10 million from last weekend, not by a long shot.]]>

<![CDATA[Well, that was easy. In his return to the ring, Deontay Wilder knocked out Robert Helenius in the first round of their FOX pay-per-view heavyweight matchup on Saturday night. It wasn't a long or productive night for Wilder, who mostly circled the ring before landing an explosive right on Helenius that floored the Swedish heavyweight at the 2:51 mark of the first round. The fight was waved off within seconds. In total, Wilder landed three punches on the night. Helenius landed five. Wilder hadn't fought since suffering a KO loss to Tyson Fury on Oct. 9 of last year. To date, Wilder's lone two defeats have both come at the hands of Fury. Saturday marked the 42nd knockout of Wilder's career.]]>

<![CDATA[Heavy leather will float through the atmosphere Saturday, when knockout artist Deontay Wilder makes his long-awaited return to the ring to take on Sweden's Robert Helenius. Here's everything you need to know before the pivotal heavyweight clash. What's on the line? In short, a spot at the top. Neither Wilder nor Helenius is in possession of a heavyweight belt coming into Saturday, but conventional wisdom says the winner will be in line for potential matchups with Tyson Fury, Andy Ruiz Jr. or Anthony Joshua in the near future. How can I watch? Fight fans can watch the heavyweight tilt on FOX Sports PBC pay-per-view. Order today! What is Wilder's career status? Wilder was last seen in the ring a year ago Sunday, when he and Fury completed their trilogy Oct. 9 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Wilder first fought Fury to a draw Dec. 1, 2018 at Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Arena) in Los Angeles. Their second bout took place Feb. 22, 2020 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with Fury earning a dramatic seventh-round TKO to wrest the WBC title from Wilder's grasp. In their third fight, Fury decisively stopped Wilder in his tracks via an 11th-round knockout. Now, Wilder is looking to resume a dominant heavyweight career that consists of 42 wins and 41 KOs. His two defeats have come at the hands of Fury, who remains the WBC heavyweight champ. What is Helenius' career status? Helenius, although not a household heavyweight name, comes into Saturday with a record of 31-3, having won his past three fights via TKO. None of those bouts went past the sixth round. The 38-year-old Swedish-Finnish boxer also compares to Wilder in stature, considering both men stand 6-foot-7. Wilder checks in at 238 pounds, while Helenius weighs 246. The undercard Leading up to Wilder-Helenius, a huge fight will take place Saturday at super middleweight, as Caleb Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) takes on Anthony Dirrell (34-2-2, 24 KOs), with both men looking to carve their way back into title contention. Plant's lone loss came in his last fight, an 11th-round TKO loss to Canelo Álvarez. Dirrell has won seven of his past nine bouts, logging just one defeat and one draw since 2015. Jr.-Luis Ortiz fight in September. "Interesting fight this weekend as Deontay Wilder rarely fights someone his own height," Griffe said of the 6-foot-7 Wilder and the 6-6 Helenius. "The questions leading up to this fight are all on Wilder's side – Is he looking past Helenius? Is he taking this fight seriously? While Helenius is a heavy hitter but hasn't fought this level of competition, and I would expect it to show throughout this fight."From a betting perspective, it's Wilder or nothing for me as he looks to use this as a showcase fight with hopes of fighting Tyson Fury a fourth time or Oleksandr Usyk next year. Would expect Wilder to take a few rounds to figure out Helenius's timing and then apply the pressure and look for a finish." <![CDATA[Andy Ruiz knocked down Luis Ortiz three times on the way to a victory by unanimous decision Sunday night, taking a key step toward a chance to become a heavyweight world champion again. Former three-division world champion Abner Mares also fought to a majority draw with Miguel Flores in Mares' return from a four-year ring absence on the pay-per-view undercard. Lightweight Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz then stopped Eduardo Ramirez in the second round with two vicious knockdowns. In the main event, Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs) had all of the big moments while grinding out a decision over Ortiz (33-3), a two-time world title challenger. The Southern California native knocked down the 43-year-old Ortiz twice in the second round and again in the seventh, but his Cuban opponent punched more accurately during long stretches of relative inactivity for both fighters. "I worked so hard for this fight, because I knew he’s a warrior and he hits hard," Ruiz said. "I thought I did a beautiful job handling his pressure and also coming forward." The judges scored the bout 114-111, 114-111 and 113-112 for Ruiz. The Associated Press also had Ruiz 114-111, with the knockdowns making the difference. Ruiz pulled off one of the bigger upsets in recent heavyweight history when he took Anthony Joshua’s three championship belts in 2019, only to lose them back to his British opponent six months later. Ruiz had fought just once since, but he rededicated himself to training with hopes of getting another shot at the belts. "I do not want to be waiting," Ruiz said. "I want to fight at least three or four times a year. I’m hungry, man. I want to be a champion again." After entering the ring in a blue-and-gold robe and trunks featuring the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams’ colors and helmet horns, Ruiz abruptly floored Ortiz early in the second round with a short right hand. Ortiz wobbled to his feet and soon slipped back down while trying to clinch with Ruiz, but he made it to the bell. Neither fighter threw much or risked much in the next four rounds, and the crowd that loudly backed Ruiz grumbled its displeasure. But Ruiz connected again late in the seventh, staggering Ortiz before sending him to the canvas with a right to the top of the head. "It was very difficult," Ruiz said. "The ability that I have for counterpunching instead of waiting for him to load up, that was a blessing." Reporting by Associated Press.]]>

<![CDATA[Andy "Destoyer" Ruiz Jr. and Luis "King Kong" Ortiz will battle in a Premier Boxing Champions heavyweight fight Sunday night at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Ruiz, 32, is 34-2-0 with 22 knockouts; Ortiz, 43, is 33-2-0 with 28 KOs. The WBC world title eliminator match is available on FOX Sports PBC pay per view. Here's everything you need from a betting perspective on the Ruiz Jr.-Ortiz bout and a pick from our betting expert (all odds via FOX Bet): RELATED: Everything you need to know about Ruiz-Ortiz ANDY RUIZ JR. If Ruiz is in shape, he could end the fight with a knockout, Griffe said. But the longer the fight, the more beneficial to Ortiz. "Ruiz vs. Ortiz has the promise of a vintage heavyweight slugfest between two mainstays at the top of the division," Griffe said. "The main question here is, which Ruiz will enter the ring after his year-plus layoff? "A focused, in-shape Ruiz could send the crowd home early and oddsmakers anticipate this being the case as he currently stands as the heavy favorite. Ortiz is a crafty veteran, however, and maybe he has one last run in him at 43 years old." PICK: Andy Ruiz Jr. by decision (+275 at FOX Bet) Ruiz is a former holder of multiple heavyweight titles when he upset Anthony Joshua by technical knockout in June 2019 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Ruiz claimed the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles with the victory, becoming the first male boxer of Mexican heritage to win a world heavyweight title. Joshua got revenge by beating Ruiz in a unanimous decision six months later in Saudi Arabia. Ortiz, who held the WBA interim heavyweight title in 2015-16, suffered both of his defeats to former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, the most recent coming on Nov. 23, 2019. Since the second loss to Wilder, Ortiz has won his two fights by first-round knockout and a TKO. The undercard features Isaac Cruz vs. Eduardo Ramirez, Abner Mares vs. Miguel Flores and Jose Valenzuela vs. Jezzrel Corrales. Are you ready for the Ruiz-Ortiz fight? <![CDATA[Two heavyweight kings of the ring — Andy "Destoyer" Ruiz Jr. and Luis "King Kong" Ortiz — will bring the pugilistic star power to Los Angeles when they meet in the ring at Crypto.com Arena on Sept. 4, live on FOX Sports PBC pay-per-view. Both Ruiz (36-2) and Ortiz (33-2-2) know how to swing the leather, and fireworks are all but certain come the first weekend of September. Here's everything you need to know before the monumental heavyweight clash. What's on the line? Bragging rights. Both Ruiz and Ortiz have touched heavyweight belts in the past, but in this fight, instead of defending a belt, both heavyweight juggernauts are looking to climb their way back into title contention. How can I watch? Fight fans can watch the heavyweight tilt on FOX Sports PBC pay-per-view. Order today! What is Ruiz's career status? A little over three years ago, Ruiz was shockingly on top of the boxing world. Ruiz, 32, became the first Mexican boxer to win a heavyweight strap when he TKO'd Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden on June 1, 2019, snatching the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles from the massive favorite. However, in the immediate rematch on Dec. 7 of the same year, Joshua won a unanimous decision at Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia. Ruiz bounced back in his next fight, defeating Chris Arreola via unanimous decision on May 1 of last year. What is Ortiz's career status? The 43-year-old Ortiz only has two losses to his name, and both came against the same fighter: former heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder. Outside of those defeats, Ortiz has lived up to his "King Kong" nickname, earning 28 knockouts in his 33 career wins. His most recent loss to Wilder came on Nov. 23, 2019, but in two bouts since then, he knocked out Alexander Flores in the first round in Nov. 2020, and TKO'd Charles Martin on the first day of 2022. <![CDATA[Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk retained his world heavyweight titles with a split decision win over Anthony Joshua on Saturday in a rematch in Saudi Arabia that was closer than last year’s first fight. Both fighters held up the blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flag as the judges’ scores were read out at King Abdullah Sport City arena near Jeddah. When he was declared the winner, Usyk hid his face behind the flag. The 35-year-old Usyk kept his WBA, WBO and IBF belts six months after serving in the Ukrainian army as part of the country’s defense against Russia’s invasion. Encouraged by a pre-fight message from Ukraine’s president, Usyk carried the weight of a war-torn nation in a fight that was on free-to-air TV in his native country, and he had to weather a sustained body attack from an improved Joshua to secure the win. Both boxers looked exhausted at the final bell. Usyk fell to the canvas and looked to the sky and was soon joined there by Joshua, who embraced his opponent and appeared to offer his help to the plight of Ukraine. In an expletive-laden speech inside the ring, Joshua praised Usyk for fighting so well in the circumstances. Usyk also claimed the Ring Magazine belt with the win. There’s only one heavyweight title that Usyk doesn’t own — the WBC one that was vacated this year by Tyson Fury, who says he is retired. When asked about Fury, Usyk said: "I am sure Tyson Fury is not retired yet. I am sure Tyson Fury wants to fight me. If I’m not fighting Tyson Fury, I’m not fighting at all." Two judges gave it to Usyk, one 115-113 and the other 116-112. The other gave the fight to Joshua, 115-113. Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, fell to his third loss in 27 fights and his career is at a crossroads. Where Usyk goes from now appears to depend on Fury. <![CDATA[By Martin RogersFOX Sports Columnist Until now, Jake Paul’s foray into professional boxing has been best described as an oddity — a weird commentary on the modern world, where an influencer fighting a variety of non-boxers pulls in massive pay-per-view sales and accompanying viral hype. No longer, it seems. For with his sixth bout, following previous matchups with a YouTuber, retired NBA player Nate Robinson and a pair of washed-up UFC fighters, the unpredictable and controversial Paul will do something few saw coming. He’ll take on a legitimately accomplished boxer. Celebrity boxing dust-ups have become all the rage over the past couple of years and Paul, along with his brother Logan, has been the face of the movement. The huge response to Logan Paul’s clash with rapper KSI in 2018 started things off. Since then, you could barely move for matches between characters as diverse as former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, faded pop star Aaron Carter and ex-NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. A few years back, current Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau even tried his hand — and won. Some have generated a greater response than others, and Jake Paul’s fights, which have earned him millions in purses and PPV buys, have led the way. Using the entertainer’s vast social media following allowed for the kind of promotional reach most boxing matches simply cannot attain. For his last bout, in which he was the main event in his rematch against Tyron Woodley, a fight featuring women’s world champ Amanda Serrano was on the undercard. Many boxing purists hated the development, railing against the Paul’s fights and the growing series of exhibitions as freak shows that had little in the way of sporting value. Paul has always countered with this question: How can bringing a younger audience and fresh sets of eyeballs to a sport that battles for mainstream attention be bad? Now he’s overturning the other part of the criticism, by taking a leap up in quality that is exceedingly rare for someone with so few fights. Paul will next challenge Hasim Rahman Jr. at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 6. Rahman Jr. is a cruiserweight who splits time between Las Vegas and Baltimore and holds a 12-1 mark (six knockouts). He's also the son of former heavyweight champ Hasim Rahman, who famously knocked out Lennox Lewis in a major upset in 2001. He doesn’t have anything like the kind of inbuilt following Paul’s opponents typically do, clocking in at 2,200 followers on Twitter and 270,000 on Instagram. Paul, by way of comparison, has more than 20 million Instagram followers. Tommy Fury, the British boxer and reality TV star that Paul was supposed to fight before Fury’s withdrawal, has 4.2 million. Rahman's closest brush with notoriety came eight years ago, when he and his brother Sharif attempted to sue Floyd Mayweather over claims Mayweather had forced Sharif into an uninterrupted 31-minute sparring session at his gym, which was broadcast on a Showtime promotional "All Access" show. What is clear here, though, is that Rahman was selected for his boxing prowess rather than his fame, a significant departure in Paul’s method. "This is a massive risk," Paul told Fighthype. "No boxer has ever really taken this kind of a risk early in their career. Canelo Alvarez’s sixth fight was against a guy who was 2-2. (Three-weight world champ) Gervonta Davis’ sixth opponent was 2-8. I like a challenge and people are calling me crazy, but that’s what I like. I think I am crazy." USA TODAY Sports boxing expert Lance Pugmire believes Paul was left with little choice but to back up his big talk with progressively more difficult fights if he wanted to sustain momentum in his boxing foray. "Jake Paul, for a while now, insisted he was very serious about getting a legitimate pro boxer in the ring," Pugmire told me, via telephone. "Undoubtedly he has now accomplished that. When you’re involved in main events at Madison Square Garden you have to be involved in significant bouts. Fights that are going to draw an audience, not only to see how good you are but to see if this can be your undoing." Picking Rahman has finally gotten Paul some of the respect in the boxing community that he was looking for. The response to the fight announcement has generally been a mix of positivity and intrigue. There is no doubt Paul has worked hard and improved his skills significantly over the past couple of years, putting in the hours with reputed trainers and dedicating himself to a punishing regime. Whether that will be enough to deal with someone of Rahman’s skill level … well, that’s what he’s hoping you’ll pay to find out. <![CDATA[Free-agent veteran NFL running backs Adrian Peterson and Le’Veon Bell have signed contracts for a heavyweight boxing exhibition and will face off against each other live from Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena on Saturday, July 30. Bell and Peterson will continue the tradition of retired professional athletes entering the boxing ring. Last December, longtime San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore fought an exhibition match against former NBA All-Star point guard Deron Williams. Bell took to social media on Friday to share the news. This will be the first time both former All-Pro running backs will be competing in a boxing ring, but since it's an exhibition, the fight won't officially mark their pro boxing debuts, per ESPN. Peterson (6-1, 220) and Bell (6-1, 225) will meet on the undercard of Social Gloves 2, a YouTube promoted event. The 37-year-old Peterson appeared in just four games last season, splitting time between Tennessee and Seattle while averaging 2.6 yards per carry. He spent the first 10 years of his career with Minnesota, where he was a four-time first-team All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler. He won the 2012 MVP award after becoming the seventh player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He checks in at fifth on the NFL's career rushing yards list (14,918 yards). Bell, 30, finished last season with Tampa Bay and also averaged 2.6 yards per carry over eight games. Before bouncing around in recent seasons, he was a star in Pittsburgh and made three Pro Bowls in his first five seasons. Neither Bell nor Peterson are officially retired from the NFL. Peterson has stated previously that when he does hang up his cleats, he wants to do so as a Viking.]]>

<![CDATA[Jermell Charlo had to exercise incredible patience during his quest to become the first undisputed super welterweight champion. After a split draw in his first bout with Brian Castaño last year was followed by a three-month postponement of their rematch because of an injury for Castaño, Charlo had to wait again Saturday night because Castaño showed up late to the arena. When the showdown finally began, Charlo survived Castaño’s early attacks and waited for the moment to pounce. The moment arrived in the 10th round, and Charlo emphatically seized it. Charlo became the first man to hold every 154-pound title in the four-belt era when he stopped his Argentine opponent with two knockdowns in the 10th. He completed his remarkable quest by becoming just the seventh fighter to reign as the undisputed champ of any weight class since the four-belt era began in 1988. "This is legacy," Charlo said. "This is something that is legendary. I’m a legend. This is a beautiful thing." After an entertaining bout with ample toe-to-toe action, Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) dropped Castaño twice in rapid succession in the 10th. Charlo leaped onto the ropes in celebration while the referee was still counting out his opponent, celebrating the addition of Castaño’s WBO super welterweight title to his WBC, WBA and IBF belts. Charlo survived several impressive early rounds by Castaño (17-1-2) in the rematch of the fighters’ split draw 10 months ago in Texas. "I got in my bag around the seventh round," said Charlo, the Houston native and twin brother of middleweight champ Jermall Charlo. "I started sitting down a little bit more instead of boxing so much and moving around. I saw that he was wearing down a little bit, and I was breaking him down. I just saw my punches being more effective. I get stronger in the later rounds, if they didn’t know." Charlo executed a tactical, counterpunching game plan impressively under a nearly full moon at Dignity Health Sports Park, the famed outdoor stadium south of downtown Los Angeles. Castaño’s aggression and Charlo’s sharp responses led to big exchanges in almost every round, highlighted by a sensational fifth round of relentless action. But Castaño’s early pace slowed in the middle rounds, and Charlo ended it in dramatic fashion at 2:33 of the 10th. After catching Castaño with a right uppercut and a left hook for the first knockdown, Charlo dropped Castaño again seconds later with two left hands to the head and a left to the body, leaving Castaño on the canvas. "We showed that we are warriors," Castaño said through a translator. "We both were fighting back and forth. It was power back and forth, and then his right hand came over and stopped the fight. He’s a champion. He hit me. He got me. But I’m OK." After unbeaten Philadelphia welterweight Jaron Ennis stopped Custio Clayton with a vicious right hand in the second round of the show’s penultimate bout, the main event was slightly delayed because Castaño showed up late to the arena, according to the fight’s promoters. Traffic and parking were terrible around the sports complex, which hosted a match for Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy at the same time as the fight card in the tennis arena that shares the property with the soccer stadium, but it wasn’t clear whether that was the reason Castaño was tardy. Both fighters still came out eager for exchanges, with Castaño again pressing forward and Charlo counterpunching adroitly. Charlo was sharp off the ropes, but Castaño got the better of him in back-and-forth action during a thrilling fourth round. The fifth round was even better, with devastating shots thrown by both fighters. Charlo then buckled Castaño’s knees with a huge left hand in the seventh, but Charlo curiously didn’t move in to pursue a finish. Turns out Charlo had a better plan after all. Charlo’s victory is a landmark moment in the history of top fighters between middleweight and welterweight. The 154-pound division was created in 1962, and talents ranging from Thomas Hearns and Terry Norris to Felix Trinidad and Winky Wright have excelled at the weight. But no boxer had held every major title at super welterweight since the WBO formed and inaugurated the four-belt championship era in 1988. Charlo won his first version of a 154-pound title in 2013, and he claimed the WBC belt in May 2016. He lost it to Tony Harrison in December 2018, but reclaimed it with a knockout victory in the rematch and swiftly added the WBA and IBF belts by stopping Jeison Rosario in September 2020. Castaño has carved out an impressive career fighting out of Buenos Aires, although he has trained in Los Angeles since January. He held versions of the WBA 154-pound title for three years before claiming the WBO strap last year. Castaño got agonizingly close to an impressive upset in his first meeting with Charlo last July with a similarly aggressive strategy. But the judges in Charlo’s native Texas couldn’t decide, with one scoring it for each fighter and the third seeing a draw. Reporting by the Associated Press]]>

<![CDATA[WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol retained his title by defeating Saul "Canelo" Alvarez by unanimous decision Saturday night. The unbeaten Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs), who has held a version of his belt since May 2016, handed Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) just the second defeat of his career. Alvarez moved back up to the heaviest weight of his career to contend for the 175-pound title. Alvarez fought at light heavyweight only one other time in his career, beating Sergey Kovalev in late 2019. After opening the fight with a trio of very close rounds, it was clear Bivol would be able to utilize his advantages with reach and height, to pepper Alvarez and keep him off when charging with his power punches. Alvarez tried, at times, to use his intimidating tactics to taunt Bivol. With a rematch clause in the contract, Alvarez said afterward in the ring he wanted a rematch with the Kyrgyzstan-born Russian champion. Bivol responded: "No problem." In the co-main event at 140 pounds, Montana Love (18-0-1, 10 KOs) beat Gabriel Valenzuela (25-3-1, 15 KOs) by unanimous decision with identical scores from all three judges (114-112). With the win, Love solidifies himself as a contender in the junior welterweight division. Also from the main undercard, Shakhram Giyasov (13-0, 9 KOs) beat Christian Gomez (22-3-1, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision (98-89, 99-88, 99-88) in a 10-round welterweight bout. Marc Castro (7-0, 5 KOs) won via unanimous decision (60-54) over Pedro Vicente (7-5-1, 2 KOs). Zhilei Zhang (24-0-1, 19 KOs) knocked out Scott Alexander just 1:54 in the first round in a heavyweight clash. Alexander was a replacement after Filip Hrgovic was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Zhang. Earlier Saturday, Joselito Velazquez (15-0-1, 10 KOs) won with a 6th-round TKO over Jose Soto (15-2, 6 KOs). Aaron Silva (10-0, 7 KOs) won via fourth-round TKO over Alexis Espino (9-1-1, 6 KOs). Elnur Abduraimov (9-0, 8 KOs) won by way of second-round TKO over Manny Correa (11-1, 7 KOs). Fernando Molina (8-0, 3 KOs) won a split decision over Ricardo Valdovinos (8-2, 5 KOs) with scores of 58-56, 57-56 for Molina and 57-56 for Valdavinos. Reporting by the Associated Press.]]>

<![CDATA[World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury retained his WBC title with a brutal sixth-round stoppage of fellow Briton Dillian Whyte in front of more than 94,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. A right uppercut from Fury sent Whyte to the canvas and the champion raised his right hand in celebration. Whyte, who appeared to lose a tooth from the mighty punch, got to his feet and tried to show he was ready to continue but then staggered, leading the referee to end the fight. Fury toyed with Whyte for much of a cagey fight, with Whyte -- the long-time mandatory challenger -- mostly reckless with some big, wayward shots. It was a 32nd win for the undefeated Fury, who defended his WBC belt for the second time and has talked of retiring at the age of 33. Before giving the biggest ever capacity for a boxing bout in Britain a now-familiar post-fight rendition of Don McLean’s "American Pie," Fury — one of boxing’s most colorful and controversial characters — suggested he would stick to a pre-fight vow to hang up his gloves "This might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King," Fury said in the ring, with his WBC and Ring Magazine belts around his shoulders. "What a way to go out." It certainly was. The punch that ended the fight with a few seconds to go in the sixth came pretty much out of nowhere, with Fury in control of the fight without truly exerting himself. Whyte had been starting to breathe heavier in what proved to be the final round, by which time he had a cut around his right eye — potentially from a clash of heads. The fifth round saw Fury dominate, with a body shot and then a straight right rocking Whyte back and getting the crowd going. "He is as strong as a bull and has the heart of a lion," Fury said of Whyte, who was his former sparring partner from 2012-13, "but tonight he met a great in the sport, one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. "I think," Fury added, "even Lennox Lewis would be proud of that uppercut." If he does retire, Fury will go down as the greatest British heavyweight, surpassing Lewis. What might make him continue is the chance to be the undisputed champion from what could be a hugely lucrative bout against Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua. Usyk beat Joshua last September to take the WBA, IBF and WBO belts and is preparing for a rematch with Joshua after leaving his native Ukraine, where he was helping his country in the war with Russia. <![CDATA[By Martin RogersFOX Sports Columnist Boxing has always been masterfully creative in drumming up interest for its big fights, playing up plotlines to their maximum effect and using whatever means necessary to get people talking. There have been beefs both real and imagined, outrageous promotional tour pranks, in-studio scuffles, boxers claiming they were, ahem, romantically involved with their rival’s girlfriend — you name it. World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury once even turned up at a press conference wearing a Batman suit and proceeded to wrestle on the floor with a hired actor dressed as The Joker. Yet as odd as that scene was, it doesn’t come close to rivaling the surreal nature of his bout this weekend. On Saturday, Fury (31-0-1, 22 knockouts) will take on fellow Englishman Dillian Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) in front of 94,000 spectators at London’s Wembley Stadium. However, the entirety of the build-up has been overshadowed by the name of a man who won’t be in attendance, who isn’t a boxer and who denies being directly involved in the fight game at all.Daniel Kinahan, until recently, remained a somewhat mysterious figure in boxing, routinely praised by and photographed with elite fighters, and described as the founder of the MTK Global promotional company, which claimed an extensive stable of high-profile boxers. There had long been whispers about Kinahan’s position in the organized crime underworld in his native Ireland, especially after an exposé about his alleged illegal activities titled "Boxing and the Mob" was aired by the BBC last year.Last week, things took their most dramatic turn yet, when the United States Department of the Treasury and the State Department took major action against what it called the Kinahan Organized Crime Group (KOCG), alleging it is a "murderous organization involved in the international trafficking of drugs and firearms" and money laundering.A Treasury statement alleged Kinahan as the head of the KOCG. He is accused of running its daily operations from his Dubai headquarters, sourcing large quantities of cocaine from South America, attempting to import drugs into the United Kingdom and allegedly making murder-for-hire payments related to a killing carried out on behalf of the KOCG. Meanwhile, the U.S. government offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of each of Kinahan, his father Christopher Sr. and his brother Christopher Jr.What has this got to do with Fury and the defense of his WBC and lineal world heavyweight titles? Actually, quite a lot.As recently as February, Fury and Kinahan were photographed together in Dubai. Kinahan has frequently been cast publicly as Fury’s "advisor" and last weekend Top Rank’s Bob Arum — Fury’s American promoter — admitted he had paid Kinahan in excess of $4 million for four fights featuring Fury over the past few years. MTK Global, formed by Kinahan and ex-boxer Matthew Macklin in 2012, has recently claimed it was no longer associated with Kinahan. However, MTK fighters have routinely been pictured with the alleged crime figure. On Monday, MTK Global CEO Bob Yalen stepped down, citing the pressure brought by the government scrutiny. On Wednesday the company announced it was folding. As part of the crackdown, American banks and, more relevantly to boxing, American companies, are now forbidden from doing business with Kinahan and his associates. A U.S. government official also likened Kinahan’s alleged gang to Japan’s infamous yakuza and the Italian mafia. It has all forced Fury, a -500 favorite with FOX Bet against Whyte, onto the back foot. He took turns between being humorously dismissive and flat-out argumentative in a midweek press conference, stating the U.S. government action had not registered significantly with him because he "doesn’t pay attention to the media."As for the Arum payment revelations, he said the 90-year-old veteran promoter could do "whatever he likes" with his money. Regarding his selfie with Kinahan? "A picture doesn’t mean I am a criminal." Addressing the whole fuss? "It’s got [nothing] to do with me."The controversy is unlikely to have any negative impact on interest in the fight, in which Whyte — who lost to Anthony Joshua in 2015 and Alexander Povetkin in 2020 — will be hoping to pull off a major upset.Boxing’s seamier side has long-held part of the appeal for some of the fan base, forming a kind of guilty pleasure. Likewise, dating back more than a hundred years, the chance to be associated with the hardest men in sports (and, in times gone by, to manipulate fights for gambling profit) has been irresistible for numerous crime figures."There is a long history of boxing and the underworld and if we are being honest, it doesn’t turn people off at all," USA TODAY Sports boxing writer Lance Pugmire told me. "It is a gritty sport where part of the glamour is associated with the danger – both of the fights themselves and, occasionally, the people involved."This time, there was no need to artificially generate buzz about the fight, because the Kinahan saga means it is already on everyone’s lips. Whyte didn’t bother showing for Wednesday’s media activities, but it didn’t really matter. He’s the B-side in this, though he will still claim $7.1 million to Fury’s $28 million. The A-side is Fury, although in this case he’s more like the A-minus side. For the true star of the show, as unsavory and indicting as it might be, is the controversy. This is boxing, where anyone, anything, and even any criminal figure or government entity, can get drawn into the hype. <![CDATA[When it comes to the greatest athletes of all time, opinions always differ on the matter. On Thursday, Skip Bayless broke down who would be the four individuals to make up his Mount Rushmore of all-time athletes — across all sports — and why they are deserving of such praise. Let's see who made the cut on the latest episode of "The Skip Bayless Show." 1. Michael Jordan Atop Bayless' list is NBA legend Jordan, a 14-time All-Star and five-time NBA MVP who won six championships with the Chicago Bulls and was named NBA Finals MVP all six times. During his 15-season career with the Bulls, Jordan averaged 30.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 1,072 regular-season games, and he had 30 games of at least 50 points. He led the league in scoring for a record 10 seasons and is one of only seven players to win an NCAA championship, an NBA championship and an Olympic gold medal. Bayless' thoughts: "Obviously the NBA GOAT. … I've said it before, and I'm gonna say it again. He was simply the greatest competitor and greatest big-game performer ever in any sport. Never been anything quite like him. … Michael Jordan was a supremely talented overachiever. He was better than anyone else, and he worked harder than anyone else. … Just an unparalleled rage to win. There's nobody who ever played any sport that I would rather have the ball in his hands with the game on the line for my life." 2. Tom Brady Coming in at the No. 2 spot on Bayless' list is none other than Brady, who is widely regarded as the greatest NFL quarterback of all time. He spent the first 20 seasons of his career in New England, where he led the Patriots to 17 division titles, 13 AFC Championship games and six Super Bowl victories. He won Super Bowl LV in his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, bringing his total to a record seven Super Bowl titles. Brady is the only QB to win a Super Bowl in three separate decades, as well as the only QB to be named Super Bowl MVP for two different franchises. Bayless' thoughts: "Tom Brady [is the] ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. … In his first six Super Bowls, Tom Brady won them with game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. … Tom Brady has proven to be the greatest leader in the history of sports. … What Brady did in Tampa [Bay], turning it into ‘Tom-pa Bay,' the ‘Suckaneers,’ 7-9 the year before and completely changed the culture during a pandemic on a torn MCL at age 43 at that point. … Brady is coming off — arguably — his greatest regular season ever. And obviously, he tried to retire, and he just couldn't put out the fire because the fire just rages in him." 3. Muhammad Ali Third on Bayless' list is American former heavyweight champion boxer and Olympic gold medalist Ali. Ali won 56 times, with 37 knockouts, in his 21-year professional career and was the first fighter to capture the heavyweight title three times. Bayless' thoughts: "He wasn't always the most dedicated. He wasn't only the most disciplined He rose, and he fell. … Muhammad Ali was the most courageous fighter I ever watched, I ever studied. Young Ali, he beat you with his speed and his style. Older Ali, he beat you with his guts and his guile, his pain threshold and his will and his strategic genius. Never seen anything like him in the ring. He was all about failing and overcoming … No superstar has ever fought back any more than Ali did. … Ali belongs." 4. Tiger Woods The five-time Masters winner, who had been out of competitive action since his devastating car accident 14 months ago prior to teeing off on Thursday at Augusta, is one of the most dominant and influential figures in PGA history. Woods won 14 major championships from 1997 to 2008, four of which came at the Masters. He is the youngest player to win at the Masters, at 21 years, 3 months and 14 days in 1997. He set the current record for the largest margin of victory (12 strokes) that same year. Woods' last major championship was at the Masters in 2019, where he won his fifth championship in the event and first major title since 2008. Bayless' thoughts: "No athlete in the history of sports … has risen above and conquered more injuries than Tiger Woods has. … I have no earthly idea how not that much more than a year later [after his near-fatal car crash, Woods is] in Augusta for the Masters. You, Tiger, have willed yourself through more injuries to more victories than any athlete ever. … This man, for about three years, dominated the sport of golf the way it [has never been] dominated and [will never be] dominated again, I don't think. This man has simply the greatest clutch putter ever … the most spectacular clutch shot-maker I've ever seen. … Like Brady, I just don't bet against him."]]>

<![CDATA[Whether you are in favor of the attention that YouTube stars Logan and Jake Paul have received for their forays into boxing, it is undeniable that they have brought attention to the sport. Both of the brothers have dipped their toes into the squared circle. Logan Paul even landed an exhibition bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., and while he lost, Mayweather said afterward that Paul was "better than I thought he was ... he's a tough, rough competitor." Jake Paul has done even more, going 5-0 in pro bouts, including knockouts of former NBA player Nate Robinson and former MMA fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley. You can debate the long-term prospects of the Paul brothers as fighters, but according to legendary boxer Mike Tyson, the fresh faces are good for the sport due to one reason: Attention. "I think they're a big shot in the arm for boxing," Tyson told Shannon Sharpe on his podcast, "Club Shay Shay." "No boxer's ever brought that many people to the network, like Logan and Jake did. They're bringing money to boxing." Sharpe asked Tyson if it was important than the brothers take on legitimate pro boxers at some point in order to build credibility. Tyson agreed, but also said that a lot of people wanted to fight them because they mistakenly believe them to be easy marks. "These guys are very emotional, they want to fight 'em so bad, they forget that he's a trained fighter," Tyson said. "He's gonna make them believe that they can really beat this guy because he's white with blonde hair and blue eyes. 'I'm gonna kill him.' And then they go in the ring and something different happens." Tyson was a dominant fighter in his day. He was the youngest heavyweight champ in history at the age of 20 and was the undisputed champ from 1987 to 1990. He won his first 19 pro fights by knockout, with 12 of them coming in the first round. So he knows what he is talking about when he points to opponents underestimating the Pauls. "They're sleepin', they're sleepin'," he said. While Tyson said it's good to have fresh faces bring attention to his sport, he did say that there are issues in boxing, including that the good pros simply don't fight frequently enough. "That's really bad for boxing, because boxing is entertainment and the name of the game," he said. "You want the fans to say 'when am I gonna see that guy fight again?' Until you have it like that, you're not gonna make the big purse dates." He explained that this is one of the reasons that a window has opened for celebrities like Jake and Logan Paul to find a space in the sport. "That's why YouTubers are taking over, because they're exciting," he said. "They can't fight, but they're more exciting than the fighters. The fighters are not fighting competitive fighters, they're fighting guys that they're walking over." Tyson said the top fighters need to also fight each other more often and to not be afraid of losing. "These guys got to want to be immortal," he said. "I wanted to be immortal. I wanted people to know my name until the end of time." You can watch the "Club Shay Shay" on YouTube or subscribe on podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts.]]>

<![CDATA[Mike Tyson was once known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet," but he says that might not have ever happened if he had experienced a normal childhood. Tyson's rise from New York street tough to the youngest heavyweight champion ever by age 20 has been well documented. And the man who went 50-6-2 with 44 knockouts across 58 professional fights says it was the death of his mother that made it all possible. "One of the best things that ever happened to me is that my mother died," Tyson said in a conversation with Shannon Sharpe on the "Club Shay Shay Podcast." "My mother would have babied me. There is no way I would have ever got into a street fight, no way I ever would have learned to stand up for myself." Sharpe pointed out, though, that whether his mother would have been alive or not, Tyson still would have encountered the same people who would have forced him to defend himself. Indeed, Tyson had already been arrested numerous times by the time he was 14, the age at which he said he knew he was capable of becoming heavyweight champion. But Tyson said, "It was ordained by God for me to deal with that. I don't navigate my life. You think I navigate my life to being the heavyweight champion? No, I don't do that. That's God." Tyson's mother died when he was 16, leaving him in the custody of boxing trainer Cus D'Amato, who became his legal guardian. Tyson said D'Amato was the one who drove him to be great. "I had a great mentor, and he always told me [I could be great] — he gave me the affirmation," Tyson said. Tyson would grow to become one of the most intimidating and dominant boxers ever. He won his first 19 pro fights by knockout — 12 of them coming in the first round — and was the undisputed heavyweight champ from 1987 to 1990. But he said that one of his mistakes was losing his focus and his intensity. "Just not training, not taking it serious anymore," Tyson said of his greatest flaw. "… I was beating guys so easy, I didn't have to train. And those are bad habits." However, Tyson also said that losing makes a fighter better. "You become a better champion, you become a better fighter [when you lose]," he said. "Life is about loss. As time goes on, we lose everything. We lose our hair, we lose our teeth and eventually, we lose our life. Life is all about loss." <![CDATA[After spending more than two years away from the ring, Keith Thurman made his long-anticipated return against former super lightweight champion Mario Barrios in the main event of Saturday's FOX pay-per-view card. Heading into Saturday, both Thurman and Barrios were looking to bounce back from losses in their previous bouts. Barrios was looking for redemption after being knocked out by Gervonta Davis in his previous fight, while Thurman was looking to prove he is still one of the elite welterweight fighters in the sport. When it was all said and done, it was Thurman who was standing on top. The former unified welterweight champion defeated Barrios via unanimous decision on Saturday night at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. The victory marked Thurman's first win since back on Jan. 26, 2019, exactly 1,106 days ago. "I still felt a little bit of ring rust in there, but it was amazing," Thurman said following his victory. "I'm just happy to be back in the ring." Thurman landed 181 punches, while Barrios connected on 105 of his punches, according to CompuBox. When asked about what's next in his fighting career, Thurman didn't shy away from calling out any and all potential opponents. "I want the champions, I want to be back on top," he shouted. "Whoever is willing to send Keith Thurman a contract, let's go baby. Let's go!" Here are some of the highlights from Saturday night's welterweight fight:]]>

<![CDATA[After taking nearly three years away from the ring, Keith Thurman is making his long-anticipated return Saturday night. In hopes of reestablishing himself as one of the premier welterweight fighters in the sport, Thurman will face former super lightweight champion Mario Barrios in the main event of Saturday's FOX pay-per-view card. Both Thurman (29-1-0) and Barrios (26-1-0) are looking to bounce back from losses in their previous bouts. Here is everything you need to know about the welterweight bout. What's on the line? While there isn't a title on the line, reputations for both fighters are. Barrios is looking for redemption after being knocked out by Gervonta Davis in his previous fight, while Thurman is looking for a title shot against either Errol Spence Jr. or Terence Crawford. How can I watch? Fight fans can watch the welterweight tilt on FOX Sports PBC pay-per-view. Order today! What is Thurman's career status? Thurman enters the fight after spending more than two years away from the ring, looking to prove he is still one of the elite welterweight fighters in the sport. He lost his last fight in 2019 to Manny Pacquiao and, in turn, lost his WBA (super) welterweight title. A win could go a long way toward helping Thurman secure a chance to reclaim a welterweight title, whether it's against Spence, Crawford or Yordenis Ugás, the man who defeated Pacquiao via decision to win the WBA (super) welterweight title in August of last year. What is Barrios' career status? Barrios is a former world champion and still very much in the prime of his career at 26 years old. But a win against Thurman would do wonders, helping to prove that he has another level he can reach and has not already plateaued.]]>

<![CDATA[What happens when King Kong meets the Prince? In this case, a lot of heavyweight leather being thrown. Heavyweight super sluggers Luis "King Kong" Ortiz (32-2-2, 27 KOs) and Charles "Prince" Martin (28-1-2, 25 KOs) will lace up their gloves on New Year's Day on FOX pay-per-view, and given their in-ring history, chances are this one will end with someone on the canvas. Of Ortiz's 32 wins, 27 have come by knockout. And both of the 42-year-old Cuban boxer's losses have come at the hands of one man: former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. In Ortiz's previous fight, on Nov. 7 of last year, he knocked out Alexander Flores in the first round. In his career, he has 18 KOs within the first four rounds. As for Martin, 25 of his 28 career victories have come by KO, and 20 have come within the first four rounds. The 35-year-old American's most recent win came in his previous fight, in which he knocked out Gerald Washington in the sixth round on Feb. 22, 2020. One of Martin's two losses came at the hands of former WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in April 2016. The other came against Adam Kownacki in September 2018. <![CDATA[Jake Paul is a problem, but apparently, he's not a child –– at least not when it comes to the fight game. Paul –– nicknamed "Problem Child" –– extended his boxing record to 5-0 after defeating retired UFC fighter Tyron Woodley via grown-man knockout Saturday night. Is it time to start taking the YouTuber-turned-boxer as a serious player in the world of pugilism? Was that punch the punch of a celebrity boxer or a real fighter? In Paul and Woodley's first fight in August, Paul earned a split-decision victory –– but the rematch went much differently than the first. The 24-year-old social media celebrity left nothing to chance when he caught Woodley with that huge right hand, and according to Skip Bayless, whatever you think of Paul, it appears he could be here to stay. Bayless is more than convinced that Paul is the real deal, pointing to his growth in the ring with each passing fight on Monday's "Undisputed." "He gets better by the round," Bayless added regarding Paul. "He is looking like a boxer to me, and he's gonna make all of his skeptics — as he goes up the ladder — he's gonna make you eat a lot of words because something is going on with this kid." Shannon Sharpe gave Paul credit for the win, but he was clear in his opinion that while his bouts are "very entertaining" they are "not professional boxing," labeling Paul as simply a "novelty." "Jake Paul is a celebrity boxer –– he's not a professional boxer," Sharpe said. "He's carved out a nice little niche for himself, and he should continue along this path. Fight guys that are not boxers by trade. They're basketball players or maybe a football player, or he's fighting Tyron Woodley that fought in a totally different discipline than what the sport of boxing is. "If he fought a boxer by trade, it would not go well, especially a boxer his size." "The Problem Child" stands at 6-foot-1 and weighed in at 191.4 pounds ahead of Saturday's bout. Sharpe also addressed Paul calling out who many consider to be the No. 1 fighter in the sport, Canelo Álvarez. "He keeps calling out Canelo. You know good and well … Canelo would knock him out inside two minutes in an actual fight. You know that. Jake Paul actually knows that." "I'm not knocking the man's hustle, but I do see what the hustle is." While Sharpe and Bayless are split in their opinions, it seems Paul will remain boxing's hottest topic. And that's not up for debate.]]>

<![CDATA[If you get a kick out of boxing matches that involve celebrities, social media influencers and athletes who generally aren't known as boxers, then Saturday night was the night for you. The headliner of the seven-fight card in Tampa, Florida was a rematch between Jake Paul — a YouTuber-turned-boxer — and retired UFC fighter Tyron Woodley. Paul entered the night with a 4-0 record and three knockouts. The one win in which he didn't record a knockout was a split-decision victory over Woodley in August. Paul was originally supposed to fight Tommy Fury, half-brother to heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, on Saturday, but Tommy Fury had to pull out of the fight due to injury. This was only Woodley's second fight. The Paul-Woodley rematch went much differently than the first, with Paul leaving nothing to chance when he caught Woodley with a massive right hand in the sixth round. Whatever you think of Paul, it appears that his rise in the boxing world won't be slowing down anytime soon. "This is as real as it f---ing gets — just like my right hand," Paul said after the fight. More on the fight below. Martin Rogers: Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley II: Get used to having Paul around Also on the card was an exhibition bout between former NBA All-Star guard Deron Wiliams and former NFL Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore. Here are the highlights from the night. Deron Williams def. Frank Gore by split decision Gore, a five-time Pro Bowl running back who retired from football following the 2020 season, entered the ring looking all-business. But Williams, who retired from basketball following the 2016-17 season, wasn't messing around either. The two battled ferociously, with Williams shoving Gore through the ropes at one point. If there was a moment from the bout that would threaten to become a meme, however, it was Gore's face when he caught this shot seemingly by surprise. Williams won the four-round bout by split decision (38-37, 37-38, 40-35), and immediately signaled that would be it for his boxing career. "I'm going to sit my old a-- down," he said. Jake Paul def. Tyron Woodley by knockout It was all fun and games when Paul, always the showman, entered the ring. The early portion of the main event, though, were marked by the fighter's penchant for clinching, as opposed to throwing punches. At one point, Woodley seemed to revert to his UFC background. Woodley did manage to land a blow that opened a cut on Paul's forehead midway through the bout. But then, in the sixth round, lightning struck. Or more accurately, Paul struck Woodley with a huge right hand, notching an emphatic knockout. Some observers said the KO salvaged a boring fight. Others marveled at the power of the winning blow. Either way, there was a ton of chatter across social media. Here is a sampling.]]>

<![CDATA[By Martin RogersFOX Sports Columnist Another week, another contrived boxing match between non-boxers that will take up too much airspace and do little for the credibility of the sport. Or, depending on how you see it, another massive event that will reach an expansive audience, capture the imaginations of superstars and social media influencers alike and catapult boxing to greater contemporary relevance. Wherever you stand on the topic of celebrity fights and the absolute proliferation of such contests over the past couple of years, there is little doubt that the concept’s primary trailblazer is the man headlining this weekend’s card. Jake Paul — YouTuber, loudmouth, multimillionaire and opinion-divider supreme — will be in action Saturday night in Tampa, Florida, fighting Tyron Woodley in a rematch of the August scrap between the pair, which Paul won on points. "Celebrities are coming out left and right," Paul told reporters. "People are even more excited to see me fight Tyron again, and there are unanswered questions." There have been, though they’re not entirely the questions Paul wanted people to be talking about. After he beat Woodley via split decision, there were queries as to whether the whole thing was above board or a contrived result aimed at further boosting Paul’s juggernaut-like popularity and level of intrigue. Mixed martial arts fighter Dillon Danis, who infamously got into a cageside fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov after Nurmagomedov submitted Conor McGregor in 2018, recently claimed that in the first bout, Woodley was contractually prohibited from knocking Paul out. Paul immediately and heatedly disputed that accusation and has now offered a $500,000 bonus for Woodley to KO him in the rematch, seeking to dispel rumors of impropriety that would surely scuttle pay-per-view sales. Or would they? "Not necessarily," said Lance Pugmire of USA TODAY Sports+, who broke the news that Danis’ claims were, in fact, incorrect. "The thing to remember with Jake Paul is that it is a specific and unique audience we’re dealing with. His fans understand that it is a show and a story, but they want the story to play out to its maximum potential, which Paul understands is far more intensive than acting out one of his YouTube scripts." The phenomenon of mass-interest fights between non-traditional boxers became a thing in 2018, when Logan Paul, Jake’s brother, fought British rapper KSI. Neither of them was particularly accomplished in the ring. Jake Paul, however, has taken things to a new, hybrid level — and profited from it spectacularly. He isn't a world-class boxer — or anything close to it — but many far worse fighters have competed professionally. Paul trains with fanatical intensity and is a knowledgeable student of the sport. "People just need to realize how serious I take this and how a lot of these other professional fighters don’t train as hard as me," Paul said. "They’re not as prepared as me. "I’ve fought with a broken nose. I’ve fought sick. The list goes on. Last fight against Tyron, I had a hyperextended elbow. Didn’t say anything. Why? Because it doesn’t matter. I’m still going to go in there and find a way to win. That’s my motivation." The earliest celebrity fights were really the equivalent of watching an organized street brawl. It is different now. Paul has some boxing chops, and there are times when he has looked really good in the ring, albeit against opposition that, to date, has numbered YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA slam dunk champion Nate Robinson, MMA fighter Ben Askren and Woodley. We will never know his full capabilities until he steps in against recognized guys — not athletes from different sports. Paul purports to be on a three-year plan that will end with him getting a shot at pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez, which would be laughable, except for the reality that money doesn’t just talk in boxing. It positively screams its head off. "I think there will probably come a time when Jake Paul steps in with someone who is just too good and classy, and it gives him a wake-up moment about whether he really wants to be doing this," Pugmire said. "But with a personality like that, you can never count them out. He is so convinced he is on this track, and if he got anywhere near title contention, it would be a no-brainer of a fight to make, an absolute goldmine for everyone involved." Meanwhile, Paul will continue to do what he’s doing: being noisy, fighting frequently, getting people’s attention by whatever means necessary. The boxing purists hate it, believing the celebrity fight craze to be the death of a sport that at its best can be as compelling as any but which has dropped off the mainstream radar outside of the elites. In one sense, it hardly seems fair that limited boxers such as Paul and others can rake in huge checks while some divisional world champions fight for sums that are tiny by comparison. However, that’s showbiz, that’s boxing, and that's a reflection of modern life. In the broadest of terms, those capable of capturing the most eyeballs make the most money. Others in the combat world are quick to embrace this phenomenon, reasoning that for a boxing match — any boxing match — to be seen by so many people can only be a good thing. It is a wild time in the industry: confusing, confounding and possibly revolutionary. It is difficult for the traditionalists to reconcile, but the key thing here is that Paul’s target audience — young, admiring of bombast, accustomed to social media promotional shenanigans — gets it. Which leads us to the most remarkable unanswered question of all regarding Paul and Woodley: Not whether the fight is real (and there’s no reason to suspect it isn’t), but if, to the hundreds of thousands expected to watch it, that even matters.
