The big crashes Sunday at Michigan played a little havoc with the power rankings, trying to take into consideration those running well who got caught up in an incident no fault of their own. There’s one thing for sure — if anyone thought putting Denny Hamlin at No. 1 was questionable, they’re likely not questioning it after his back-to-back victories at Nashville and Michigan. Here are my power rankings heading into this weekend’s race at Pocono Raceway. Dropped out: Chase Briscoe (LW: 5) On the verge: Briscoe, Chris Buescher, William Byron, Austin Cindric, Shane van Gisbergen, Bubba Wallace 10. Daniel Suarez (Last Week: NR)Spire Motorsports No. 7 Chevrolet Suarez is back in the rankings after a sixth-place finish at Michigan. That gives him three finishes of sixth or better (including a victory) in his last five races. He is ninth in the overall standings. 9. Chase Elliott (Last Week: 6)Hendrick Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet Elliott swerved into Christopher Bell, causing a hard wreck for both of them, and he ended up 32nd. That was after he finished fourth in the opening stage and won the second stage. He is fourth in the overall standings. 8. Carson Hocevar (Last Week: 9)Spire Motorsports No. 77 Chevrolet Hocevar finished fifth at Michigan but not without drama. Still, he kept his head in the game and earned a solid result, earning 45 points, the second most of any driver in the event. It was his first top-five since his Talladega win. 7. Erik Jones (Last Week: 10)Legacy Motor Club No. 43 Toyota Jones had his best finish of the season as he placed second at Michigan, which followed finishes of 12th, 19th, 13th and 11th. That might not seem like much, but he only had three top-20 finishes in the first 10 races this year. 6. Ryan Blaney (Last Week: 7)Team Penske No. 12 Ford Blaney once again grinded out a solid finish despite not appearing to have the speed at Michigan. He started 19th and finished eighth, his fourth top-10 finish in his last five races. Blaney is third in the series standings. 5. Ty Gibbs (Last Week: 4)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota Gibbs got caught up in the big wreck in the second stage after finishing second in the opening stage at Michigan. He finished 25th but is still fifth in the overall standings. 4. Christopher Bell (Last Week: 3)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota Bell probably was as startled as anybody when Chase Elliott swerved into him (unintentionally) at Michigan. The hard crash resulted in Bell finishing 31st after being sixth in the second stage. He’s 10th in the overall standings. 3. Kyle Larson (Last Week: 8)Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet Larson finished fourth at Michigan. He was never really in contention as he was seventh in the opening stage and fourth in the second stage, but he appeared more consistent than in many other races this year. It was his second top-five in his last three races. 2. Tyler Reddick (Last Week: 2)23XI Racing No. 45 Toyota Reddick suffered his first DNF (did not finish) of the season after getting caught up in the wreck in the second stage. He had to be thinking what could have been as he had won the opening stage. 1. Denny Hamlin (Last Week: 1)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota Hamlin has won back-to-back races, has four top-three finishes in his last five starts and has eight top-five finishes in his last 12 starts. He’s also cutting into Reddick’s points lead as he sits 51 points behind Reddick for the top spot in the standings.

Denny Hamlin is truly living in the world of it doesn’t matter where you start, it’s where you finish. For the second consecutive week, Hamlin went from the rear of the field to Victory Lane as he won at Michigan International Speedway for his third win of the season. Hamlin, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 car, won the pole but damage to his underbody from a flat tire in practice resulted in fixes that dropped him to the rear of the field for the start. That was no problem for Hamlin, who won at Michigan for the second consecutive year and fourth overall. "Most athletes, they get to a point where they have everything they need," team owner Joe Gibbs said in his postrace news conference. "And they just lose the drive and passion. "And what we're witnessing with Denny is really just the opposite of that. He’s full-blown into the simulator, works extremely hard. ... He’s really helped build what we have [at JGR]." Here are my takeaways: 1. Cool Tribute To Busch Hamlin tied Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time wins list with 63, and he celebrated by honoring Busch, who died of complications from pneumonia May 21, a day after being hospitalized. Hamlin had a flag designed for the celebration that included Busch’s stylized No. 8 that he used since 2023 at Richard Childress Racing with a No. 1 in front of it to pay tribute to his days driving the No. 18 as Hamlin’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing. "I'm thinking, do I put the 8 — I know him as the 18, I don't know the right thing," Hamlin said in his postrace news conference. "Then this person owns this font, that person owns this trademark. It's like we had to have some collaboration, and I appreciate RCR letting us use the stylized 8 with the Joe Gibbs Racing 1. "It was just a happy balance that I felt good about when it all came out. ... I just wanted to pay my respects to someone that I really did look up to and taught me so much as a teammate. There's nothing we can say or do that's going to make his family feel better, but at least during that little time, you can pay him the respects that he deserves." 2. Bell Takes Massive Hit Christopher Bell will be evaluated for possible wrist and ankle injuries after a brutal crash where Chase Elliott unintentionally drifted up into him. Both drivers got out of their cars under their own power. "We’re going to continue [to have him treated] tonight when he gets home — we’re going to make sure that he gets everything he needs to get there, whatever it might be," team owner Joe Gibbs said. "And then we'll just have to kind of wait [to see if he can race]. It is his wrist and his ankle." 3. Jones surging with second Erik Jones has had progressively better results, and his second-place finish was his first top-five of the season. Like Hamlin, he also had to start at the rear. Jones now sits just 18 points behind the playoff cutoff. "Our group is rolling really well as a team, and we're executing as well," the Legacy Motor Club driver said. "We've just got to do every little thing right, and it will come. You run up front like that, it's going to happen for you." 4. Hocevar Causes Ire Carson Hocevar finished fifth but was the subject of ire from other drivers for causing a multicar pileup when he got into the back of John Hunter Nemechek. Hocevar said on the Prime postrace show that he was trying to avoid getting damage as the cars appeared to lift off the throttle in front of him. "It looked like they kind of accordioned a little bit and I really didn’t expect it," Hocevar said. "I turned left. ... I’m shocked that it spun him left. Ultimately, my evasiveness wrecked him and everybody there." 4 ½. What’s Next The NASCAR Cup Series heads to the 2.5-mile triangular-shaped Pocono Raceway for its annual stop at another high-speed track. It also is one of Hamlin’s best tracks. He has seven career victories at the track, which features three distinct and uniquely shaped turns, which means a driver typically can’t be perfect in all of them.

Based on the odds, that could be the case. Included in Reddick's five wins this year are Daytona, Atlanta and COTA — the first three competitions of the season. Reddick comes into Michigan after finishing sixth at Nashville last week. He finished this race 13th in 2025. Second On The Board Denny Hamlin led 57 laps and had a best lap of 29.73 at Nashville last week. He ended up getting into Victory Lane after holding off teammate Christopher Bell down the stretch. In addition to claiming the All-Star Race trophy at Dover, Hamlin's got two points-wins on the season. He sits second in the Cup standings behind Tyler Reddick. Something else that Hamlin has working in his favor is that he won this race in 2025, edging out Chris Buescher by 1.099 seconds. One To Watch Speaking of Christopher Bell, he's one to watch this weekend. He's got back-to-back second-place finishes, with 398 laps led this year. Last year at this track, he started 25th and finished 16th.

Richard Childress had imagined Saturday being a happy day, one where he would announce that Kyle Busch would remain with his organization in 2027 and highlight how recent improvements made them optimistic for their future. Instead, Childress, much like many in the NASCAR industry, was still reeling from Busch dying suddenly on May 21 from complications of pneumonia. Childress, who won six Cup titles with Dale Earnhardt and guided his organization through Earnhardt’s death in the 2001 Daytona 500, talked for about 14 minutes during a news conference Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. "You lose two of the greatest drivers that have ever driven a car in NASCAR, and have to go through it again. I just feel so, so bad for the family and the employees and everybody," Childress said. "I hadn't slept very good lately. I'll leave it at that." Busch was set to be a free agent after this season but Childress said they had planned to announce at Michigan that Busch would continue driving the RCR No. 8 car. He had not won since 2023 but the team appeared to be making progress in the month prior to his death. "I talked to Kyle [the] Tuesday night before [he died] and we had a great conversation talking about how he said, ‘You give me cars like you gave me the last three weeks, ... I will make the Chase this year,’" Childress said. "Both of us had a lot of confidence in us. ... We built a friendship out of this." In his first public comments since Busch’s death, Childress said the plan is for Austin Hill to remain in the renumbered No. 33 car the rest of the year. He also advocated for Busch, who ranks ninth all-time with 63 Cup wins and has won more races than any driver in the three national series with 234, to be put into the NASCAR Hall of Fame as soon as possible. "Kyle will go down in history as one of the greatest race drivers that's ever been," Childress said. "Definitely, he'll be in the Hall of Fame. I'd love to see him put in it right away." Busch died a day after being taken to the hospital following a simulator session. He was conscious but feeling as if he was going to pass out and coughing up blood. The 41-year-old Busch had battled pneumonia for days to weeks, according to his death certificate, developed sepsis and then had blood clots and went into hemorrhagic shock in the hours before his death. Busch’s widow, Samantha, made her first public comments Friday on social media with a post Friday. "As a family, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you," she wrote. "The prayers, messages, flowers, meals, hugs, and countless acts of kindness have carried us through the most heartbreaking days of our lives. While our hearts are absolutely shattered, we have felt God’s presence and arms wrapped tightly around us through each and every one of you." Samantha appreciated the notes and the posts that showed the impact Kyle had on fans and the sport. "The love that has surrounded our family during this unimaginable time has brought comfort in the middle of so much pain," she wrote. "Knowing the impact Kyle had on others and seeing how they are honoring him through each unique act of generosity is a true testament to how special Kyle is to so many people. "There are moments when the weight of this loss feels impossible to carry, yet time and time again God, through you all, has shown us we are not alone." She ended her post with additional thanks: "From family and friends to fans and complete strangers, thank you for showing up for us. Thank you for loving our family so well. Thank you for loving Kyle. Thank you for honoring him. "We may never find the words to fully express what your support has meant to us, but please know that we are deeply grateful."

Two current Cup drivers hold the keys to the NASCAR silly season. And one isn’t even in a contract year. Alex Bowman (Hendrick Motorsports) is the most high-profile driver who is not signed for next year. Whether he continues at Hendrick Motorsports could determine how silly season evolves. The other driver who is key is Connor Zilisch, who is signed through next season. He's one of the most heralded prospects and Trackhouse is struggling. Could he sign early with another team — much like Tyler Reddick did a few years ago, a move that eventually led to him leaving a year early at season’s end? It’s possible. Obviously, there are things that can’t be predicted. The devastating death on May 21 of Kyle Busch leaves a much bigger void beyond a seat in the Cup Series. It will likely take some time for Richard Childress Racing to determine how it will move forward for 2027. The most recent silly season development came on May 30 when 23XI Racing officially announced that Corey Heim would replace Riley Herbst in the No. 35 car next year. Here is how things look at each organization, in order of owner points following the May 31 race at Nashville. 23XI Racing On May 30, Corey Heim was announced as a full-time driver, replacing Riley Herbst. Tyler Reddick just signed a contract extension. Bubba Wallace is in an option year and would expect him back. Joe Gibbs Racing It would be a surprise if JGR has any changes for next year. Ty Gibbs isn’t expected to be going anywhere and Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell are signed beyond this season. The one thing that JGR might need to anticipate is Hamlin retiring from full-time racing after 2027 then having to fill that ride. Brent Crews, who drives for JGR in the O’Reilly Series, is the team’s focus on the development driver side who could be Cup ready. Hendrick Motorsports Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and William Byron are signed through next year. Bowman is the question and not just because it could be time for a change. He's also in limbo because of injuries that have sidelined him three times over the last five years. The team does have Corey Day competing in the O’Reilly Series but he’s likely a year away. Although his recent performances — including victories at Talladega and Dover — have some thinking he could move up for 2027. Zilisch is also a possibility. It wouldn’t be out of the question to extend Bowman for another year until HMS can lock down one of those drivers. It also wouldn’t be out of the question if Bowman decides he is too beat up to continue racing. Team Penske With Ryan Blaney having recently signed a contract extension, Team Penske has its former champions Blaney and Joey Logano under contact. Austin Cindric doesn’t have a deal yet for next year. He’s 16th in the points, and it appears all those ahead of them could very well return to their same rides next year. RFK Racing Ryan Preece, at 17th in the standings, is a driver whose future appears mildly unclear. RFK likely will have just two charters for next season (it is leasing one that will go to Legacy Motor Club next year) but it also has strong sponsorship from Kroger and its vendors to the point where running Preece as an open car next year is definitely a possibility. But he still needs to sign a deal. Chris Buescher (eighth in the standings) and Brad Keselowski (13th) will most likely return to their seats, although Buescher certainly has talent to continue to get some interest from other organizations. Keselowski will race at RFK until he is ready to retire, which he says won’t be for several more years. Spire Motorsports Spire Motorsports has Carson Hocevar locked in long-term, while Michael McDowell and Daniel Suárez are not. Spire has shown the willingness to eat a year of a contract to get a driver it wants. But who would that be at this point? Suárez is 10th in the standings and McDowell is 19th. Spire, which has an alliance at Hendrick, also could be a spot for Day or Zilisch or Bowman, if Hendrick needs to find a Cup spot for any of them. Trackhouse Racing All three Trackhouse drivers — Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen and Zilisch — are signed at least through next season. Zilisch is the one who could be on the move if there is enough money that money talks. Only van Gisbergen (12th in the standings) is having a season to be happy about as Chastain is 26th and Zilisch is 34th. Front Row Motorsports Zane Smith signed a contract extension last year that has him solid at FRM (which is good for FRM as Smith has surged to 20th in the standings) and team owner Bob Jenkins and sponsor Love’s like Todd Gilliland (25th), who should get renewed. Noah Gragson? He’s a strong personality but hasn’t had the results that would wow many, as he sits 29th in the standings. Would FRM move Layne Riggs or Chandler Smith to Cup? That depends on sponsorship most likely. Legacy Motor Club Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek could very well return next year, although some improved performance in May (Jones is now 21st in the standings) is an indication of progress at the organization. Legacy will add a third chartered car next year as well and that is the expected landing spot for Riley Herbst. Jesse Love also appears to be a candidate for a ride at Legacy if it does opt to make a change. Kaulig Racing Neither AJ Allmendinger nor Ty Dillon are locked in at Kaulig next year. The organization is in a tough spot without manufacturer support, and it would be a mild surprise and a huge scramble for Dodge to enter Cup in 2027. Any changes to this lineup are still TBD. Allmendinger is 22nd in the standings; Dillon is 30th. Hyak Motorsports Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (23rd in the standings) signed a contract extension in May and is set to remain with the organization. Richard Childress Racing Austin Dillon is expected to return in 2027 as he sits 24th in the standings. Who will fill the open seat is still to be determined. Austin Hill has been the driver of the renumbered No. 33 car for a few weeks, and he could be a candidate for that car long term. If the car continues to have sponsorship from alcohol, THC and nicotine pouches, that could require a driver who is 25 or older, as those companies typically want someone who doesn’t look close to being underage. If Noah Gragson gets pushed out of Front Row, there might be potential here with his past Bass Pro Shops relationship. Wood Brothers Josh Berry is up after this season and sits 31st in the standings. He’s well-liked and Team Penske (of which Wood Brothers is an affiliate) isn’t the strongest this year. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if he remains. Haas Factory Team Cole Custer hasn’t had a good year (he’s 33rd in the standings) but whether a change is made is debatable as the team appears to be still trying to find its footing. He did have a respectable month of May. Rick Ware Racing As long as RWR doesn’t sell, this should remain Cody Ware’s ride.

Thanks to a rain delay and an already late start, the NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway didn’t end until well past midnight on the East Coast. Is that a problem? A little bit on a Sunday night. Night races can be electric, and sometimes for programming and scheduling purposes, the best time for a race. In Nashville, the later start meant a better chance to beat the heat and allow for a typical afternoon summer storm to pass through. But the biggest question at Nashville — the race ended when Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag at 12:25 a.m. ET — and the lateness of the race goes beyond the 80-minute rain delay: Is the Nashville race too long? It is a 300-lap, 400-mile race, relatively normal, but with the Next Gen car it seems to be a long event. Without red flags, the Nashville race this year was 3 hours, 44 minutes; while it was 3:05 in 2025, 4:03 in 2024 (five overtimes!), 3:00 in 2023 and 3:35 in 2022. NASCAR has done a good job in making some of its races shorter. NASCAR cut the length of races at Dover from 500 miles to 400 in 1997 and at Pocono from 500 miles to 400 in 2012 (and they were 325 and 350 in the 2020 and 2021 doubleheader weekends). Martinsville had one of its races cut from 500 laps to 400 laps in 2022. The fall Charlotte race that is back on the oval will be 400 miles, not 500 miles — it was 500 miles before the track went to its road course for the fall race in 2018. [NASCAR POWER RANKINGS: New No. 1 Tops List After Nashville] The key time for a race, with a few exceptions (Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 most notably) should be 2 hours, 45 minutes to 3 hours, 15 minutes. Nashville has shown that it can have 400-mile races in that time frame, but also three in the last five that have exceeded it, all by at least 20 minutes. Certainly fans travel long distances and want a race that delivers enough action for that travel commitment. NASCAR will always balance the will of ticket buyers versus those who are watching at home. NASCAR even added laps to a race this year, making Watkins Glen a 100-lap race instead of 90, as the drivers seem to have fewer wrecks and those races were ending closer to the 2-hour mark than NASCAR wanted. But there are races that could be shorter, and Nashville appears to be one of them. Could it hurt to try a 350-mile race next year and see if it changes anything? And while NASCAR is at it, here are a couple more that could use changing: --Change one of the Talladega races to a 400-mile event instead of both being 500 miles. Daytona has a 500-mile and 400-mile event. Why not Talladega? Maybe cut the race on the date has less sunlight in order to get in the full race. --Cut one of the Bristol races from 500 laps to 400 or 450. Martinsville already had one of its races cut and that doesn’t seem to impact the quality of the event. Why not do that with the spring race to give it a little bit of a different vibe than the fall? Part of NASCAR's roots is that Cup races often were marathons, ultimate tests of man and machine. But to get some of the "hell yeah" moments with cars that rarely fail (granted, the Nashville issues were because of brake rotor issues), urgency is needed. Nashville was saved by a late caution; without it, that spectacular finish doesn’t happen. A few more "sprint" races wouldn’t be a bad thing. As NASCAR continues to look to liven up its schedule, race lengths belong in the conversation. In Second Thoughts, Bob Pockrass offers his opinion on a burning motorsports topic.

There is a new No. 1 on this list. Denny Hamlin earned his second victory of the season by capturing the win Sunday at Nashville Superspeedway. And while that is no match for Tyler Reddick’s five wins this year, the fact that he is riding the momentum of three top-three finishes in the last four races puts him atop the power rankings. Here are my power rankings as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend: Dropped out: Daniel Suárez (Last Week: 10) On the verge: Chris Buescher, William Byron, Austin Cindric, Ryan Preece, Daniel Suárez, Shane van Gisbergen 10. Erik Jones (Last Week: Not Ranked)Legacy Motor Club No. 43 Toyota Jones finished 11th at Nashville, but he’s on this list because of his consistency. He has three finishes of 12th or 13th in the last four races. Much of the competition has had a much more up-and-down last month. 9. Carson Hocevar (Last Week: 9)Spire Motorsports No. 77 Chevrolet Hocevar placed 10th at Nashville for his fifth top-10 finish in his last eight starts. He needed that top 10 after finishes of 28th and 23rd the previous two weeks. He’s ninth in the series standings. 8. Kyle Larson (Last Week: 4)Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet A flat tire in the final laps ruined a possible solid day for Larson at Nashville. He has just one top-20 finish in his last five starts but he’s showing top-10 speed nearly every week and sits sixth in the standings. 7. Ryan Blaney (Last Week: 5)Team Penske No. 12 Ford Blaney was eighth at Nashville for his third top 10 in his last four races. He isn’t running as close to the front as earlier this year, but he’s still earning respectable results and is third in the series standings. 6. Chase Elliott (Last Week: 6)Hendrick Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet Elliott was among those (along with Blaney, Shane van Gisbergen and Reddick) involved in an accident just before the finish, but he still wound up seventh. It was his eighth top 10 this year in 14 starts. Elliott sits fourth in the standings. 5. Chase Briscoe (Last Week: 8)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 Toyota Briscoe was dicing for the win with teammates Christopher Bell and Hamlin at Nashville and wound up third. It was not the finish he wanted but still one he needed in a season where he has six finishes outside the top 20. 4. Ty Gibbs (Last Week: 3)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota Gibbs finished 13th at Nashville after finishes of third and sixth in his previous two races. He is fifth in the series standings. 3. Christopher Bell (Last Week: 7)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota Bell felt he let a win get away from him at Nashville, but at least he finished second. Bell has back-to-back second-place finishes after having no finish better than 17th in the previous five events. 2. Tyler Reddick (Last Week: 1)23XI Racing No. 45 Toyota Reddick was sixth at Nashville. In his last four races, he has finishes of fourth, fifth, fourth and sixth. He continues to have a comfortable lead in the series standings. 1. Denny Hamlin (Last Week: 2)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota Hamlin has a win, two seconds, a third and a fourth in his last 10 starts. In other words, he’s had a shot to win half of the last 10 events. That is the consistency that allows Hamlin to ooze confidence.

Here's what's happening this week Inside The Garage: DETROIT — Josef Newgarden had this look of pain on his face. But this wasn’t from his foot. It was for the award he was about to receive for the driver who gained the most positions during the race. For Newgarden, that’s just a reminder that he qualified poorly. In some races, it would also be a little bit of a reminder of what could have been. But on Sunday in Detroit, it at least was a sign of perseverance that he went from struggling early in the race to finishing 10th on a weekend where he walked with a crutch and a walking boot on his left foot, which was injured in a crash in the Indianapolis 500. "I think a top-15 would have been a miracle today, so where we ended up, you’ve got to take that for sure," Newgarden told me and other reporters following the race. "I feel bad. I feel like the opportunity that the team put in place for this car was podium potential." The Team Penske No. 2 driver has not talked specifics of the injury, which was termed as "minor" by the INDYCAR doctor following the crash a week prior in Indy. But it hurt bad enough that the team had its IMSA driver Felipe Nasr prepared to get in the car if needed, as he wore a firesuit and had his helmet for the opening practice Friday. The two-time INDYCAR champion Newgarden admitted he was not at his best and in a moment of blunt honesty, saying Nasr possibly could have performed better. But like most drivers, Newgarden badly wanted to race and if the team wanted him to race, he was going to put on the firesuit and go. Newgarden said if the team told him they were putting Nasr in the car, he would have understood the decision. "If they didn't want me to drive, I would have accepted that," he said. "If they wanted to win the race, you put Felipe in this car. ... He was ready to rock. "I wasn't going to be sitting out [voluntarily]. But this is not my team, so you’ve got to be open to it." Newgarden could thank his team’s pit strategy that gave him some track position and then his ability to just stay out of trouble. That wasn’t easy because his competitors knew he wasn’t 100 percent. "It was like everybody got the memo out there to use me up is what it kind of felt like, whenever they could — I felt like I was in just defense mode most of the race," Newgarden said. "And certainly at the end I was just defense mode, just trying to protect the car more than anything." "But the team did just an amazing job to let me get in it and drive, and they did a great race. The only reason we finished where we did is because what the team did. Great strategy, great pit stops." [INDYCAR TAKEAWAYS: Alex Palou Wins Detroit Grand Prix Slugfest] Having driven with a broken clavicle and wrist in 2016, Newgarden said the race Sunday was more difficult. "This was worse," he said. "This is definitely a less advantageous situation. ... I knew it wasn't going to be good. And it wasn't. I don't want to speak on [the pain] too much. "It is what it is." With another race this weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway), Newgarden hopes the oval (and a week of therapy/rest) won’t be as much of a pain. "We were here, we were in the race, and now we can go to the next one. ... I'm mixed [on Gateway]," he said. "I'm excited, but I'm in two minds right now." Heim Time, Finally Corey Heim finally will have a full-time Cup ride in 2027 as 23XI Racing announced he will drive the No. 35 next season, replacing Riley Herbst. The organization started the third car for Herbst but also with an eye on the highly touted Heim having an established team for his rookie season. Heim, the defending truck series champion, has patiently waited while under contract for the full-time Cup ride, running a mix of trucks and Cup this year. "I just always felt like this is the most prepared race team I’ve ever worked with, and it just felt like a home to me and everyone felt like they were very welcoming and motivated," Heim said in a news conference Saturday at Nashville. "When I ran my first race with these guys, and their preparation was just top-notch. I felt confident going into that race and everyone was firing on all cylinders. So to me, it was an easy decision to proceed to work with them for the long term." Preece's Appeal Denied In a 2-1 decision, a NASCAR-appointed appeals panel upheld a 25-point, $50,000 penalty to Ryan Preece for intentionally wrecking Ty Gibbs at Texas. Preece had indicated on his team radio earlier in the race that he would wreck Gibbs. Later in the race, Gibbs tried to cut in front of Preece and Preece didn’t lift — whether that was intentionally wrecking Gibbs or just not cutting him a break appears to be in the eye of the beholder. The appeals panel stated: ""Although not a unanimous decision, NASCAR and RFK Racing presented competing interpretations of common data. Neither side clearly proved their point, but Mr. Preece’s comments showed that he chose to not cut his competitor any breaks." Preece and RFK Racing won’t appeal the decision to the final appeals officer. Preece is two points out of a Chase spot with 12 races left in the regular season. The burden of proof on an appeal from the rulebook: "The Appeals Panel must determine whether NASCAR has shown that it is more likely than not that a violation occurred based on the NASCAR Rule Book, special rules, bulletins or any applicable agreements to which NASCAR is a party cited in the penalty notice." Preece tried to have some humor but make a point with this social post: Ford: No O’Reilly There are no Ford teams in the O’Reilly Series at the moment, so where does that put Ford’s development program for its NASCAR Cup teams? Ford Racing global director Mark Rushbrook had this response when I asked him about it as he met with a group of reporters Saturday in Detroit: "We’re looking at our driver development program more broadly these days. There’s a strong focus on sports car. We see that as a potential path. ... There is the possibility to certainly go straight from trucks to Cup as some drivers have done before." Rushbrook said they would only get back into the O’Reilly Series if there is the right program. He said the Cup has relevance with the Mustang and the trucks have relevance with the F-150. "Right now, none of our [Cup] teams are in O’Reilly," Rushbrook said. "It has to make sense for Ford and our teams in terms of a place to race." In The News --Conor Daly, fresh from his Indy 500 start, will be in the Kaulig Racing No. 25 "free agent" truck at Lucas Oil Raceway (Indianapolis Raceway Park) next month. --Mick Schumacher was named the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year by a voting panel of media members following the Indy 500. He was the best-finishing rookie in the race with an 18th-place finish. Social Spotlight They Said It "What an unbelievable day — starting first, going to last, and back to first." — Denny Hamlin following his NASCAR win at Nashville. Admittedly, Denny Hamlin has not executed the best on restarts this season, so winning Sunday in a race that was a nail-biter down the stretch certainly made for a satisfying night. Hamlin led 57 of the 115 laps of the final stage at Nashville Superspeedway but stole the win from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell after a late caution set up a four-lap dash to the finish. "We had a few [races] where we were the best car this year, and we didn't win because of restarts," Hamlin said in his post-race news conference following his second victory of the year. "It felt really good to get one back that we certainly shouldn't have on speed. "The 20 [of Bell] had us covered. I think he passed us about three or four times. But I just learned from my mistakes earlier in the season and how I approach restarts." Here are my takeaways: 1. Worst To First For Hamlin Much like the track going from dry to wet to dry, Hamlin went from first to suddenly worst to methodically getting back to first. Hamlin started from the pole but was penalized for jumping the restart by mashing the throttle well ahead of the restart zone. It was a pretty clear violation of the restart rules for Hamlin, who didn’t question the call at the start of the race, which was delayed by 80 minutes because of rain. "Usually, as the leader, you can dictate when to go, but it was way too close to Turn 4 and not close enough to the start-finish line," Hamlin said about restarting well ahead of the zone that is on the frontstretch. "No arguing it or anything like that. It was certainly the right call." From there, he just had to be patient over the 300-lap, 400-mile race on the 1.33-mile concrete track. He obviously knows how to rally as he won for the 62nd time in his Cup career. 2. Bell Loses Another One A week after he could blame the rain, Bell could only blame himself for not winning. He had a better car than Hamlin and was in position to win until a late caution set up the dash to the finish. He could never get clearly ahead of Hamlin as they battled along with JGR teammate Chase Briscoe for the top three spots. The finishing order ended up being Hamlin-Bell-Briscoe, extending Bell’s winless streak to 21. He has led 398 laps this year without a win. "I’m just disappointed in myself," Bell said in a Toyota news release. "[My team] brought a great race car and I didn’t get the job done." 3. In The Dumps Nine cars ended up retiring from the race because of damage in accidents (another three were damaged in a crash just past the finish line) and only 15 cars finished on the lead lap in a race filled with wrecks. It had drivers feeling frustrated, with possibly Bubba Wallace feeling it the most, as he dropped to 15th in the standings, just 34 points ahead of the current playoff bubble. "I’m tired," he said in his interview on Prime following his exit. "It’s hard to be in the same boat constantly every week. You’ve got to figure out how to put it behind you and show up. I somehow become the bad guy the days following this, but I’ve got to figure out how to be better and learn from it. "It’s really hard when you are driving your best and trying to just make progress throughout the race, and you get wiped out." 4. Impressive SVG Shane van Gisbergen is known for his road-course dominance but he had a solid day at Nashville with a fifth-place finish. The race showed he is getting the hang of the ovals. "I really enjoyed myself," "van Gisbergen said in a Chevrolet news release. "I learned a lot. I learned to be comfortable moving around in (Turns) 1 and 2, which I’ve never been able to do before." 4 ½. What’s Next The NASCAR Cup Series goes to one of the fastest tracks on the circuit as it heads to the 2-mile Michigan Speedway for a 400-mile Sunday afternoon race. ARCA (Friday) and trucks (Saturday), both on FS1, are also on the weekend lineup. That race could very well be another JGR intra-team battle, but with it being near the homes of Chevrolet and Ford, this race often carries extra emphasis for the teams.

He closed at +380 to be the outright winner at Charlotte but ended up finishing third. On the season, he's led an outstanding 699 laps to complement his one win, his All-Star Race victory and six top-five finishes. In 2025, Hamlin finished this race third after starting second. His 29.66 was the best lap of the day last year at the track. One To Watch With one win and 249 laps led, Blaney comes into the weekend off a seventh-place finish at the Coke 600 and sitting third in the Cup standings. What the driver of the No. 12 Ford does have going for him is that he won this race in 2025. Blaney got the victory by holding off the field, defeating second-place Carson Hocevar by a margin of 2.83 seconds.

The 2025 NASCAR season ended on a high note for champion Kyle Larson. For Denny Hamlin, it couldn't have ended worse, as the veteran driver watched his chances of securing his first title elude him once again. Now, Hamlin and Larson are second and fourth on the 2026 championship oddsboard. However, the driver who is holding on as the favorite is Tyler Reddick. Since the beginning of the season, the driver of the No. 45 has surged to +350 from +1000. He's won five races so far this season, including the first three at Daytona, Atlanta and COTA. How will the rest of the season unfold now that the league is returning to the 10-race Chase format? Many of the tracks in those 10 fit into Hamlin’s wheelhouse. I know, I know, every season begins with wondering if this year could be the year for Hamlin. This season? It really could be. Chase Elliott+850 to win the Cup ChampionshipOf all the drivers who could thrive in this new championship format that rewards consistency, Elliott possibly tops the list. He wrecked out of only two races last year, and he likes this format, which could go a long way when it comes to performance. Plus, Chevrolet has a new body that should result in improved results. Brad Keselowski Over 0.5 winsIs Keselowski going to win this year? He only has one win in the last four seasons, and he broke his leg in the offseason. So why should we expect him to win? He had four top-three finishes in the last 19 races of 2025. If he builds on that, he’ll run in the top three enough that he will find a way to earn a trophy. Kyle Larson Under 4.5 wins This is a tough one. Larson has only earned more than four wins just twice in his career. The Next Gen car makes things so even, that there is more parity. Getting to four wins seems so much more attainable than five, especially in a points system where the risk-vs-reward for a bold move is more dramatic.

Kevin Harvick recalled a time in the 2010s when young NASCAR drivers with aspirations of the Truck Series and beyond had to make a decision. Compete for Chevrolet and Kevin Harvick Incorporated, or drive with Toyota and Kyle Busch Motorsports. There was no playing both sides. Drivers had to choose a direction. Fans in the grandstands picked a side and were distinctly divided. "You had to pick a path," Harvick said on the latest episode of "Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour." "You were either going KBM and Toyota or you were going KHI and Chevrolet… That is just not how it worked." Harvick relished that competition. In fact, he helped Busch breed his team, and create the foundation for a decade-long rivalry. That contention brought out the best in both racers, and ultimately brought them closer together. After Busch, 41, suddenly passed away last Thursday, Harvick remembers him, and their relationship fondly, reminiscing with stories on "Happy Hour." On the racetrack, Harvick and Busch were always foes. The levels of distaste, however, fluctuated. They were involved in what Harvick referred to as a "heavy war," stemming from a wreck during a 2005 race in Dover, Delaware. But when Busch wanted to go down the route of starting his own racing team, Harvick put his differences to the side. Busch called Harvick, asking: "Can you tell me how you run your team?" Harvick "bridged the gap," welcoming Busch into his race shop, sharing his budgets, giving him "everything he had." In true antagonist fashion, Harvick said, Busch "stole" some of his employees, hiring them to his new team. And thus, Kyle Busch Motorsports was born, and a new rivalry burgeoned. Busch and Harvick pushed each other, making the other a better "driver, owner, and teammate," Harvick said. "Probably the best thing that happened in my career," Harvick said, "was I had a competitor that wouldn't back down like Kyle did." Ultimately, they raced one another 933 times in NASCAR's top series. They learned to respect one another, and even let their guard down off the track. "We sat on those two sides and competed, but you know, off the racetrack, we had fun," Harvick said. "We had a good time, and good conversations. It took a long time to get to the point of being cordial, but it definitely got to that point at the end."

Daniel Suárez wasn’t on this list after Watkins Glen, but he's on it now. That’s what winning the Coke 600 will do for a driver. Suárez won with a two-tire pit strategy and he's also now 10th in the standings, meaning he has had consistently good finishes this year. Maybe not many great finishes but consistently good ones. So he’s the first driver you’ll read on this top-10 list. Here are my power rankings after the 600 and heading into this weekend at Nashville Superspeedway. Dropped out: Chris Buescher (Last Week: 7), Austin Cindric (Last Week :10) On the verge: Alex Bowman, Chris Buescher, William Byron, Austin Cindric, Austin Dillon, Ryan Preece 10. Daniel Suárez (Last Week: Not Ranked)Spire Motorsports No. 7 Chevrolet Suárez won at Charlotte but also has six top-13 finishes in his last eight starts. He isn’t rattling off top fives, but when you continuously flirt with the top 10, you eventually will be flirting with the top five. 9. Carson Hocevar (Last Week: 9)Spire Motorsports No. 77 Chevrolet Hocevar has had back-to-back bad races with a 28th at Watkins Glen and 23rd at Charlotte. But he was on such a surge going into Watkins Glen. Let’s see how he does at Nashville. 8. Chase Briscoe (Last Week: 5)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 Toyota Briscoe was caught up in an accident in the final stage but had started second, third and fourth in the opening three stages. He finished 34th but consistently shows his speed. 7. Christopher Bell (Last Week: Not Ranked)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota Bell likely would have won the race (or at least challenged Denny Hamlin for it) if it wasn’t rain-shortened. But he at least made it to the finish and ended up with a solid points day in second. 6. Chase Elliott (Last Week: 3)Hendrick Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet Elliott spun and wrecked on Lap 90, a frustrating and disappointing result. He could easily bounce back at Nashville. 5. Ryan Blaney (Last Week: 6)Team Penske No. 12 Ford Blaney finished top 10 in all the stages and placed seventh in the race. He also was the top-finishing Ford. This team needs to find a little speed on the intermediates before the Chase. 4. Kyle Larson (Last Week: 8)Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet Larson won the opening stage and placed fifth in the second and third stages and finished fifth in the race. A solid day for a team still trying to learn the new Chevrolet body. 3. Ty Gibbs (Last Week: 4)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota Gibbs was a threat throughout the race and wound up sixth. After a couple of finishes outside the top 30, Gibbs has finishes of third and sixth in his last two starts. 2. Denny Hamlin (Last Week: 2)Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota Hamlin’s third-place finish was his sixth top-five in his last 10 starts. He just rarely has an awfully bad day and any other year would be first on this list. It’s tempting to make him No. 1 but the guy at No. 1 continues to produce consistently strong finishes. 1. Tyler Reddick (Last Week: 1)23XI Racing No. 45 Toyota Reddick’s fourth-place finish was his ninth top five of the season. Yes, he is on his longest losing streak of the season (four races!) but he is rattling off top fives with great regularity.

Here's what's happening this week Inside The Garage: Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Speedway, Ind.) — Alex Palou left Indianapolis Motor Speedway without another Borg Warner Trophy but still remains the INDYCAR points leader. His lead could have been more, though, as Palou was docked five points for a postrace technical infraction following Sunday's Indianapolis 500. It was another punch on a day when the defending race winner wound up in seventh place despite leading a race-high 59 laps. The Chip Ganassi driver, who has four series titles (including the last three) still has a 37-point lead in the standings over David Malukas, who finished second Sunday to winner Felix Rosenqvist by 0.0233 seconds in the closest finish in race history. That lead could have been 42 points but after the race, technical inspectors found Palou's front wing violated the rule that says it must not measure less than 8.3 inches when set at any angle. The team was fined $10,000. "INDYCAR Officiating has determined that the non-compliance was the result of an assembly error and not an intentional modification," the INDYCAR Officiating Board said in a statement. Chip Ganassi Racing said it would not appeal the penalty and it had no intention of trying to gain an advantage. "During technical inspection following Sunday’s Indianapolis 500, a part failure was discovered in the front wing assembly of the No. 10 car," the CGR statement said. "The failure caused the wing to fall out of compliance with INDYCAR’s technical parameters." It isn’t rare for racing teams to potentially design a part to meet inspection parameters before an event but then it fails in a way to give them a performance advantage. Racing series typically won’t take intent into account if it is a competitive advantage. [INDY 500 TAKEAWAYS: Wild, Historic Final Lap Of Felix Rosenqvist's Win] Palou told me and other reporters after his seventh-place finish that he didn’t have the track position (based on strategy) nor the speed at the end to make a run at the leaders. "This place, you know the only important lap is lap 200," Palou said. "I knew that although we were leading so much at the beginning of the race, the race was going to be at the end. "It was a little bit of a shame that we were not on the optimal strategy, but I’m super happy for the month we had." With 11 races left in the 18-race schedule, there is plenty of time for the championship to be decided. Currently, there are six drivers within 100 points of Palou — Malukas (37 points behind), Kyle Kirkwood (minus-49), Christian Lundgaard (minus-78), Pato O’Ward (minus-85), Scott McLaughlin (minus-92), and Indy 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist (minus-97). Another Shot At Indy 500 Glory? Helio Castroneves (Meyer Shank), Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Arrow McLaren) all did one-off rides for the 2026 Indy 500 looking for another Borg Warner Trophy to add to their collection. Castroneves already owns four wins, Sato two and Hunter-Reay one. Sato finished 10th Sunday, Castroneves 25th and Hunter-Reay 32nd. The one driver who certainly would want another shot is Hunter-Reay, whose car spun out from underneath him just 17 laps into the race. "I re-evaluate the situation every year," Hunter-Reay told me and other reporters outside the care center. "I’m only 15 minutes after I got out of the car. I'll absolutely want another shot at it, but we'll reassess that at the right time." Castroneves had a quick reply: "Who knows? We’ll see." In The News --NASCAR has made its damaged vehicle policy in the O’Reilly and truck series the same as Cup, where teams will have a designated work area in the garage. Once they go back to the track, they get three laps to meet minimum speed. -- Dayton International Speedway is replacing its lighting system with new lights that should make the oval much brighter and also the road course brighter. It will be the first time Musco (lighting company) has used these bulbs/technology in the United States; they have used it in Saudi Arabia. It won’t be ready for August but will be done before January. Not Just A Road Course Guy Shane van Gisbergen had an 11th-place finish at Charlotte on Sunday, lifting him to 14th in the Cup standings. He’s currently the only Trackhouse driver in the top 16 of the standings. Big Day On The Big Day Romain Grosjean is outside the top 20 in the INDYCAR standings, but he was top-10 on Sunday with a ninth-place finish in the Indianapolis 500. The NASCAR industry rallied behind the Busch family and then tried to bring some normalcy to its weekend by running the traditional 600-mile race Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Daniel Suarez, who has credited Kyle Busch with helping him in his early days moving from NASCAR’s Mexico series to the United States, won on a late strategy call that put him out front. He held off the field for a few laps, the rains came and the race ended 27 laps before the scheduled distance. It was an emotional win for Spire Motorsports, which is housed in the former Kyle Busch Motorsports shop. Team co-owner Jeff Dickerson was once a spotter and agent for Busch, who died suddenly Thursday from complications of pneumonia and sepsis. "When the rain first started falling, you just find yourself thinking, you're just like, man, you know you're going to get some text from him like ‘You lucky a—hole,’" Dickerson said in his post-race news conference. Here are my takeaways: 1. Suarez Takes His Bow It was a big win for Suarez, who now has three wins in 336 career starts. It was his first on a traditional oval, with his other wins on a road course and a drafting track (Atlanta). Even if it took some strategy and rain to do it, Suarez did have to hold off the field. He now sits 10th in the standings, showing that he has had a season worthy of a victory. Suarez is in his first year at Spire, and many had considered this a short-term plan for Spire until it could land someone who had won more consistently. Suarez has driven for Joe Gibbs Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing and Trackhouse Racing, among others, during his Cup career. "It's no secret I was bouncing a lot in between teams, and at one point I thought my career was going to be over," Suarez said in his post-race news conference. "But I never stopped believing in myself. I never stopped believing in the person and the driver that I can be." 2. Great Win for Spire The victory gave Spire two wins this year, as Hocevar won at Talladega last month. The organization previously had just one win, which came in a rain-shortened race at Daytona in 2019. Dickerson last year sold majority ownership of Spire to TWG Motorsports, which also owns Cadillac F1, Andretti Global and several other racing teams. That influx of capital has allowed the organization the ability to compete for employees when it comes to salaries, while also building more depth. Spire drivers are ninth (Carson Hocevar), 10th (Suarez) and 20th (Michael McDowell) in the standings. "I'm glad we're getting trophies," Dickerson said. "Our goal was to put two in the playoffs and get three wins this year. Those guys ninth and 10th in points. Still a long ways to go. I don't want to fumble it." 3. What If ... For Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin, they saw a winning opportunity slip away with the rain. They were on four fresh tires (as opposed to Suarez’s two) but didn’t have enough time to catch him. Bell hates to lose, and he hasn’t won this year. It would have been big for Bell, who's a former KBM driver. His crew chief, Adam Stevens, was the crew chief for both of Busch’s championships. "I honestly think they made the right call," Bell said in a broadcast interview after the race. "It is really late, but it is a bummer. It is 2026 for us." 4. Rough Night For Many There were several hard crashes in the event, ending the day for Austin Cindric, Connor Zilisch, Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain, Ryan Preece and Chase Briscoe. Several of those drivers had bad points days at a pivotal time. Now halfway through the regular season, Briscoe, Preece and Cindric are 15th, 16th and 17th in the standings (16 drivers make the Chase field). Chastain dropped to 23rd, 65 points behind the current cutoff. Preece, who was collected in someone else’s mistake just a week after his own mistake ended his day earlier, tried to be philosophical. "I stepped on it last week [and now] somebody else did," Preece said in a Ford news release. "I can’t get too mad, I guess." 4 ½. What's Next The Cup Series heads to Nashville Superspeedway, a 1.33-mile concrete oval.

Katherine Legge made history as the first woman to attempt The Double, racing on the same day in INDYCAR's Indianapolis 500 before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600. Over the years, five drivers have attempted the Memorial Day Double, but Tony Stewart remains the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles in a single day. Most recently, NASCAR driver Kyle Larson tried twice, in 2024 and 2025, but both attempts were foiled. And unfortunately for Legge, her Indy 500 ended very early when she was involved in a wreck, leaving Stewart as the only driver to finish both races on the same day for at least another year. The 45-year-old veteran driver from England competed in the Indy 500 for HMD Motorsports as part of an alliance with A.J. Foyt Racing behind the wheel of the No. 11 Chevrolet. For NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600, she was in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet. There are several logistical challenges of attempting The Double, efficient transportation from Indianapolis to Charlotte included. And Legge likely needed to leave Indianapolis somewhere between 4 and 5 p.m. ET to make it to the Coke 600 before the scheduled 6 p.m. ET start. But with her wreck, she didn't have any problems making it to NASCAR on time. Through Legge's busy day, we're here tracking her progress. Indy 500 Field Hits The Track After qualifying for the Indy 500 last weekend, Legge will start this race from the ninth row from 26th. Indy 500 Green Flag While it seemed like rain might impede the scheduled start of the 2026 Indy 500, the green flag flew on time, and Legge started 26th. The average Indy 500 is about three hours. Legge Collected In Early Indy 500 Wreck The Indy 500 had barely started. But on Lap 19, as Ryan Hunter-Reay spun out in Turn 2, Legge tried to avoid him, but the pair still made contact, bringing out the first caution flag. Both drivers were able to exit their cars without help from the safety team, and they were both evaluated and released from the medical center. But unfortunately for her, Legge's Indy 500 run ended very early. What Legge Said After Her Indy 500 Crash After being evaluated and released from the medical center, Legge explained her perspective on what happened. Obviously, she was devastated. "I'm just gutted more than anything," Legge told FOX Sports' Georgia Henneberry. "Ryan spun in front of me," she continued, explaining her perspective on the wreck. "I think he was battling his car for a minute, and I was back there, just chilling out and saving fuel. And he spun and went down the track, then started coming back up the track, so I had to abort mission and try and go low. And I just didn't make it." "Desperately frustrating," Legge told us and other reporters outside the medical center. "Everybody involved deserved more. To be taken out by something out of your control, I feel like, may be slightly better than being taken out by something in your control. … They were looking forward to a long day today, and now it's been cut relatively short." Legge added that she couldn't see much in front of her because of the smoke off Hunter-Reay's tires and car. She opted to try the high side of the track to avoid him as he spun low, but then when his car slid back up the track, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "At the last minute, I had to go left, and it just wasn't enough time for the car to not spin out of control," she continued. "It is what it is. I don't think anybody could have saved that one, unfortunately." Now, it's onto Charlotte Motor Speedway, and on her way, she acknowledged she'll have to adjust her attitude and put the Indy 500 behind her. Legge Arrives In Charlotte Katherine Legge arrived in Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600 after participating in the Indy 500. Legge Starts In Coca-Cola 600 After a tough crash at Indy, Katherine Legge is aiming for a rebound in NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600, starting from the 37th spot on the grid. Near the beginning of the second stage of NASCAR's longest race, Legge was running 35th and was the first driver one lap down from the leaders. Legge Makes It Through Stage 2, Then Loses A Wheel A rough day got rough as Legge was four laps down after completing the second stage of the 600. She pitted at the end of stage 2 to put wheels on, but lost a wheel and had to pit again on the 204th lap. As of lap 220, she was running nine laps down in 36th place. Legge Finishes Coca-Cola 600 In 31st The Coca-Cola 600 was shortened because of rain, with drivers completing 373 of 400 total laps. Legge finished 31st, last among the cars running. It wouldn't surprise anyone if she attempted The Double again after such unfortunate luck this time around.

Tributes to the late Kyle Busch were abundant throughout NASCAR's weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, especially at Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. Before the green flag, NASCAR had a special tribute moment to Busch, who died suddenly Thursday as the result of pneumonia complications. He was 41. Busch's wife, Samantha, and their two children, Brexton and Lennix, were in attendance, along with Busch's older brother, NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch. The stylized No. 8 of Busch's Richard Childress Racing Cheverolet was painted on the CMS infield. As the NASCAR field and others in attendance faced the painted infield, NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell delivered a brief tribute to the two-time NASCAR champion. "He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when, in reality, he had already proven everything," O'Donnell said, standing in front of Samantha, Brexton and Richard Childress. "What I think we’ll miss the most isn’t the wins. It’s the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate or give some advice. It was the husband, the father or the guy who quietly did things for others when no one was watching." When O'Donnell was done, everyone shared a moment of silence to honor Busch ahead of the race. Kurt also walked onto the infield and laid eight white roses across the No. 8 in the grass. Austin Hill replaced Busch for Richard Childress Racing but behind the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet. Childress said the No. 8 car will remain vacant, waiting for 11-year-old Brexton if he advances to the Cup Series someday. Additionally, NASCAR teams, drivers, the broadcast and the fans in the grandstands were silent during Lap 8 of the race to further emphasize the tremendous impact one of the greatest drivers had on the sport and its community. [PUSHING THE LIMIT: Kevin Harvick Reflects On Kyle Busch Relationship] Other tributes throughout the weekend included drivers wearing Kyle Busch apparel, sharing their favorite stories and memories and winners bowing with the checkered flag, Busch's signature victorious move. Cars also raced with No. 8 decals, and fans wrote messages on the grid before the Coca-Cola 600. The motorsports world has also honored Busch throughout the weekend, including INDYCAR's Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.
