Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s eventful start to the 2026 season added another chapter on Sunday. Gardner-Johnson was ejected before halftime of the Bills’ Week 6 game against the Las Vegas Raiders for unsportsmanlike conduct. He appeared to be in a verbal dispute with several Raiders’ players before the flag, and the replay showed Gardner-Johnson spitting in the area of Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. It’s the latest in a series of incidents for the veteran safety, who signed a one-year deal with Buffalo this year worth up to $6 million. In Week 2, the NFL fined Gardner-Johnson $11,194 for a hip drop tackle on Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs on the first snap of the third quarter of Buffalo’s 41-31 win. Gardner-Johnson was hit with another $11,194 fine following last Monday’s 37-34 overtime win over the Rams, this time for striking/kicking/kneeing on a play late in regulation. Gardner-Johnson stirred things up again after Buffalo’s 29-26 loss to the Patriots in Week 4. Efton Chism III made a diving, one-handed touchdown catch to win the game, and Gardner-Johnson brushed it off afterward, calling Chism a "practice squad player" who "made a hell of a catch." Sunday’s ejection isn’t the first of Gardner-Johnson’s career, either. In December 2024, while with the Eagles, he was disqualified against the Commanders after drawing his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of the game, then flashed two middle fingers at the crowd on his way to the tunnel. The Bills entered Sunday 4-1, while the Raiders came in at 3-2.

The Iceman is back. Three weeks away from the field didn’t slow down Caleb Williams, who was named Tom Brady’s LFG Player of the Game after a strong return from a hamstring injury in the Chicago Bears’ 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Bears quarterback completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions to help Chicago improve to 4-2 with its win over Atlanta. Williams, who hadn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, completed his first 12 passes, the longest streak to start a game in his career. He went 6-for-6 on the opening drive, capping it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland for his 50th career touchdown pass. Brady, who called the game on FOX alongside Kevin Burkhardt, opened his conversation with Williams by saying he could see the quarterback was ready before the game even started. "Man, you were locked in from the very start," Brady said. "You were locked in pre-game warm-up when I saw you. So focused." Williams said the emotions were running high after sitting out, and he wanted to convert that momentum to winning football. "I wanted to kind of channel that energy of getting back out here with the guys. It’s what I love to do," Williams said. "I love being out here with my guys. They’re my brothers. I’ve told them that over and over again. Not being able to be out there was really frustrating for me, and being able to get back out here and perform… it's great to come out with a win." The Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 31-7 in the fourth before Atlanta scored 16 straight points, including two touchdown catches by Kyle Pitts and two two-point conversions, to cut it to 31-23. Williams acknowledged that Chicago has to clean things up. "We’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get better with penalties and not allowing teams to come back and get close like that." Williams spread the ball around, and Brady asked about getting Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III involved. Burden had a big day with eight catches on eight targets for 95 yards. Brady asked how hard the offense is to stop when everyone is rolling. "We know who we got … we've got to be able to just put the ball in their hands, and that’s part of my job," Williams said. "That’s part of coach’s job, and we’re going to keep trying to do that for the rest of the year." Williams credited his playmakers one by one, calling them all "problem children," including a nod to a third-down catch by Rome Odunze, a sail-route catch by Burden and a check-down to Loveland that got Chicago close. "The big-time playmakers show up," Williams said, "I just got to do a good job of getting the ball in their hands." Williams has also had some of the best performances of his young career with Brady in the booth. "I always seem to perform when you’re here, man," Williams said to Brady afterwards. The performance was a welcome turnaround for the Bears, who were coming off a 31-7 loss at Green Bay in Week 5 and went 2-1 in Williams’ absence with Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent starting. Brady closed the conversation by wishing Williams well, with a quick turnaround on the schedule. "Keep it up, rest up," Brady said. "I know you got a short turnaround Thursday night. Good luck." The Los Angeles Chargers’ wide receiver room took another hit Sunday. Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey was ruled out against the Kansas City Chiefs with a concussion, the team announced. McConkey was sidelined due to a head injury in the first half of the game at Arrowhead Stadium and was initially evaluated before the team made the ruling official. The Chargers were trailing the Chiefs 9-3 when McConkey was ruled out. McConkey finished the game with one reception for 17 yards. McConkey had 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown through his first four appearances this season. The injury came just as McConkey worked his way back on the field from another injury. He entered Sunday with no injury designation after dealing with a lingering foot injury, and he went from limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday to a full participant Friday. McConkey's absence leaves the Chargers thin at wideout. With McConkey out and Tre’ Harris sidelined by a hamstring injury, Los Angeles will likely lean on Quentin Johnston as its top receiver. The Chargers came into Sunday still searching for their first win of the season at 0-5, while the Chiefs entered 4-0 and atop the AFC West.

Facing a 34-10 fourth-quarter deficit, the New York Giants officially benched quarterback Jameis Winston for J.J. McCarthy. Winston endured a rough outing on Sunday, completing just 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The offense continued its downfield struggles, putting up a meager 10 offensive points with Winston against a Saints defense allowing 30.2 points per game. McCarthy provided an immediate spark upon entering the game. He nearly engineered a massive comeback against the Saints, driving the New York offense to three consecutive scoring drives. The Giants lost 34-27 to fall to 3-2-1, but McCarthy flashed the kind of potential the Giants need moving forward. In just one quarter of action, he posted 243 passing yards and a touchdown, alongside 26 rushing yards. The touchdown came on a 24-yard strike to tight end Isaiah Likely. Despite the early interception, McCarthy showed genuine promise. That glimpse of potential is huge for a Giants offense seeking long-term stability at quarterback after Jaxson Dart was lost for the season to a knee injury. McCarthy went 6-4 as a starter last season, but his underlying numbers painted a concerning picture despite the Minnesota Vikings' offensive weapons. He completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, finishing with a 35.6 QBR. The former Michigan star may have struggled statistically early in his career, but he has always found ways to keep his teams competitive. That’s exactly what he did for Harbaugh’s Giants on Sunday afternoon, fighting until the very end. Winston has played well since taking over for Dart, but Sunday afternoon was an off day for the veteran quarterback. In a lopsided game, Harbaugh likely put McCarthy in to see what he has moving forward, as the quarterback position remains a question mark for the offense.

The BYU Cougars have officially stamped its mark on the college football landscape. On Saturday night, the Cougars pulled off an upset against No. 2-ranked Notre Dame for the biggest win in program history. Its 28-24 victory was more than just another win, but it was a matchup quarterback Bear Bachmeier had marked on his calendar for years. Before committing to BYU during the 2025 recruiting cycle, Bachmeier visited South Bend and nearly committed to Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish. However, until Bachmeier’s post-game press conference, it wasn’t known that Notre Dame apparently disrespected him during his visit. He spoke to reporters after the game highlighting this game as extra motivation, and it goes back to his recruting experience with the program. "[Coach Kalani Sitake] won't like this because I'm talking about myself, but out of high school Notre Dame disrespected me and my family pretty badly," Bachmeier said. "I wasn't going to lose to those guys. There was no way I was going to lose to those guys tonight." Bachmeier made the most of his revenge game against the Fighting Irish on Saturday night, delivering one of the best performances of his career. He completed 23-of-36 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, while adding 45 yards and two scores on the ground. His moment came late in the fourth quarter when he threw a go-ahead six-yard touchdown to tight end Walker Lyons, giving the Cougars the lead with 1:47 remaining. All night, Bachmeier played with a chip on his shoulder and put the offense on his back in the absence of running back LJ Martin. Whether watching from the sidelines, playing on the field, or listening from the broadcast booth, it was clear this was more than just a game for him. During his visit to South Bend, Bachmeier intended to commit, but Notre Dame's staff was reportedly focused on five-star Deuce Knight the entire time. Once Knight committed, Bachmeier was left out in the cold, which could be where his feeling of disrespect stems from. Knight ended up decommitting from Notre Dame and flipped to Auburn under head coach Hugh Freeze. Then Bachmeier committed to the Cougars and found immediate playing time, leading the program to a 12-2 record and a Pop-Tarts Bowl win. With the recruitment drama behind him and a strong resume built at BYU, it appears that everything worked out for Bachmeier and his family. The Cougars are now ranked No. 2 in the latest AP Poll, marking their highest ranking since 1984.

Caleb Williams’ return from injury didn’t disappoint, but Chicago’s fourth-quarter performance left plenty to be desired. After building a 31-7 lead, the Bears relaxed and nearly let the Falcons back in the game. Atlanta cut it to a one-possession lead with under five minutes to go, but a strip sack of Michael Penix ended the rally. In the end, Atlanta just couldn’t keep up with Chicago’s high-powered offense. Falling behind early took Bijan Robinson out of the game, and Penix struggled to match his draft classmate throw-for-throw before catching fire late. Here are my takeaways: Ben Johnson did commendable work keeping Chicago’s offense afloat during Williams’ three-week absence, but it just wasn’t the same without the dynamic quarterback under center. The third-year quarterback wasted no time Sunday showing what the unit had been missing, completing his first 12 passes and leading the Bears on two touchdown drives to open the game. Johnson’s play-calling set up his quarterback for success, but Williams’ creativity got Chicago on the board for the opening score. He broke out of a crumbling pocket and fired a throw to Colston Loveland that broke one of the golden rules of quarterbacking: don't throw late and across your body. The rules don’t apply when you possess that kind of talent. In Tom Brady's words, Williams had that ball gyrating on Sunday. That’s the kind of throw Case Keenum wouldn’t dare try. Tyson Bagent might try it but would fail miserably nine times out of 10. For Williams, it feels more like a layup. That element elevates the Bears offense from a well-coached unit to one capable of reaching historic heights. Johnson’s scheme raises the floor; Williams talent blows up the ceiling. They make quite the duo. In a league-wide draft of coach-quarterback combos, Chicago’s pairing might go first overall if age were strongly considered. These two are already hard to beat in their current form, and they’ll just keep improving as they gain experience. Williams is already playing like one of the league’s best quarterbacks. After completing 30-of-36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown, he ranks second in the NFL in expected points added per dropback, according to Next Gen Stats. He ranks third in success rate and is completing over 70% of his passes, which had been the benchmark Johnson set for his young quarterback last offseason. Williams’ 83% completion rate against Atlanta was his highest single-game mark. He’s found efficiency to match his knack for big plays. If the 24-year-old keeps this up, he’ll force his way into the MVP conversation. Williams and Penix looked like they were playing two different sports. The Bears quarterback took advantage of every opportunity his team gave him, while Penix left too much on the field. With all the offensive firepower on its roster, Atlanta should be suited for a shootout. But when the game script gets out of hand, and the offense can’t spam outside zone runs for Robinson, things just fall apart. As a result, it felt like Penix was in third-and-long all day. He tends to struggle in those obvious passing situations, and that was certainly the case on Sunday. Penix didn’t play well on early downs, either. He missed a few open throws that could have swung the momentum in Atlanta’s direction, and was lucky to escape the game without a round number in the interception column. Penix didn’t throw a pick, but his fumble essentially ended the game. In a different universe, this would have been another monster day for Robinson, who averaged 6.8 yards per carry but was limited to just nine carries with Atlanta in catch-up mode all day. Before the late rally, the Falcons offense couldn’t stay on the field, and special-teams blunders put even more pressure on the defense. Rookie return man Zach Branch fumbled twice, gifting Chicago short fields. The tough day for the Falcons got even worse in the third quarter when rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels, a third-round pick off to a promising start, suffered a scary neck injury that brought the game to a halt. FOX’s Tom Rinaldi shared a promising update during the broadcast: Daniels was fully conscious and had full movement in all his extremities before being transported to a local hospital. After dropping their first two divisional games, the Bears have little margin for error. Taking care of business in Atlanta was paramount. Things look a bit more promising after Sunday’s win. The Vikings still lead 5-0, but with the offense performing the way it is, it feels like only a matter of time before they fall back to the pack. The Bears look like the team most likely to catch them. The tie-breakers aren’t working in their favor right now, but they have the division’s second-best point differential, which is typically the strongest indicator of future performance. Whether Chicago can defend their division title could come down to the defense, which could be an issue. When this unit isn’t forcing turnovers, it looks awfully vulnerable. The run defense is full of holes, and the pass coverage breaks down too often. Getting Kyler Gordon back on the field will help create big plays—as it did Sunday—but defensive coordinator Dennis Allen needs to find down-to-down consistency if this team wants to contend for a Super Bowl. Even if that doesn’t happen, the Bears have an offense that will keep it any game. Detroit’s the only other team that can say that, but the Lions defense has even more holes.

MEMORIAL STADIUM (Bloomington, Ind.) — It doesn’t get much better than this: the team with the highest winning percentage in college football history against the team with the greatest comeback story in college football history. Ohio State and Indiana, the past two national champions, took center stage on "Big Noon Saturday," with the Buckeyes halting the Hoosiers’ 22-game winning streak — and thereby preventing them from tying OSU’s Big Ten record of 23 straight. Star receivers Jeremiah Smith and Nick Marsh traded touchdowns, but in the end, Marsh just couldn't keep his left foot in the end zone on a last-minute, go-ahead TD try. Ohio State prevailed 19-15 despite losing Heisman candidate quarterback Julian Sayin to a shoulder injury. It was the 100th meeting of these two teams in a series that dates back to 1901. The previous 99 were nothing like this. Let’s look back at a picture-perfect day in Bloomington. FOX's "Big Noon Kickoff" was back in Bloomington for the first time since the Hoosiers' 2025 season opener. Back in his Heisman Trophy-winning days with the Alabama Crimson Tide, running back Mark Ingram was known for his power and burst. So was it a surprise that he'd arrive to the BNK set in an INDY Car? Perhaps the surprise was that the car was driven by 2025 Indianapolis 500 champion Alex Palou. But on this day, it was Ingram who wore the Winner's Wreath while the two chugged some milk, as is the winner's tradition. The Hoosiers have their own traditions, including touching Hep's Rock upon their arrival at Memorial Stadium. The rock, installed by former head coach Terry Hoeppner in 2005, symbolizes immovable strength and team unity. A pair of Ohio State legends, two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin (left) and 2014 national championship coach Urban Meyer, huddled up on the Buckeyes' sideline. Receiver Jeremiah Smith, an Ohio State legend in the making, is already the Buckeyes' all-time leader in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He entered Saturday's game just two touchdowns and 315 receiving yards shy of becoming the all-time Big Ten leader in both categories. Hoosiers star receiver Charlie Becker, who would have a game-high 165 receiving yards on nine catches, started his day with a pregame prayer. Though the Buckeyes led early, head coach Ryan Day wasn't happy with the number of Ohio State penalties and some non-calls for pass interference on receiver Smith, who was routinely double-teamed. Meanwhile, Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti struck his standard pose on the Indiana sideline. He wasn't happy with Indiana's lack of execution on offense, empty scoring drives and turnovers. The loss was the Hoosiers' 31st in their past 33 matchups against Ohio State. Almost all of those, of course, were B.C. — Before Cignetti. After going scoreless in the first quarter, the Hoosiers got on the board as Turbo Richard fought his way into the end zone for a touchdown to give Indiana a 7-3 lead. Every rushing attempt was a fight against the Buckeyes. Indiana ran for just 73 yards on 29 carries, the team's lowest rushing output since its 2024 College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame. The Richard score came after an interception by Indiana's other No. 1, safety Amare Ferrell, who had two on the day. Despite the double-team, Jeremiah Smith (No. 4) caught a 38-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to bump Ohio State's lead to 19-7, which turned out to be a crucial score. It was Smith's 39th career TD catch, tying him with Michigan’s Braylon Edwards (2001-04) for the Big Ten record. The Hoosiers constantly harassed quarterback Julian Sayin, sacking him four times in addition to the two picks, which doubled his season total. On Saturday, Ohio State's all-time leader in completion percentage completed only 52% of his 29 passes. He was knocked out of the game on the final sack and could miss "several weeks" with an injury, according to Day. The Hoosiers mounted a late comeback and trailed by only four points with two minutes left in the game. Indiana started a seven-play, 43-yard drive, but on fourth-and-4 at Ohio State's 27-yard line, receiver Nick Marsh landed just out of bounds on QB Josh Hoover's pass. While watching the replay of the pass, Ohio State coach Day reacted with a little body English. His concern soon turned to relief and the Buckeyes left Bloomington with a hard-fought victory in a game between two college football heavyweights.
